Thank you Ashton and Jonathan for this inspiring video. Until now I've never heard about the Christmas market below the Ravenna Viadukt. The Ravenna Viadukt is part of the Höllentalbahn (lit. hells valley railway) which is connecting Freiburg and Titisee-Neustadt. It was designed and planned by Robert Gerwig - a well-known engineer. It has been opened on May 21, 1887 as a cog railway due to the steep slope in some sections. With more advanced designs of locomotives available it was turned into a standard railway line based on frictive traction. This railway connection was electrified for operation with 50 Hz alternating current which is different from the frequency of 16 2/3 Hz usually used at German railways. The frequency of 50 Hz is used for power supply to industry and private homes. However in the very first electric drives - particularly the ones used in locomotives - the higher frequency was likely to cause enormous sparks and hence strong wear at switches and the collectors of electric motors. In the 1960ies the power supply was changed according to the railway standard specification. Robert Gerwig also participated in the planning and construction of the north part of the Gotthard railway line in Switzerland. Additionally he also caused the invention of the original Schwarzwald Cuckoo clock. There are entries in Wikipedia for both, Höllentalbahn and Robert Gerwig. You may put your skills in German to the test since the english entries are really short lacking a lot of information provided by the German entries.

I was intrigued when I saw this video of the beautiful German Christmas market. I lived downtown Chicago, IL, for quite a few years, and they have a German Christmas market every year in Daley Plaza. In the early years, they had a lot of space, and always had a large tent where a German man would demonstrate Glass blowing and it was so fascinating watching him make such beautiful blown glass figures. It was usually very cold so the warmth from his furnace was very enticing. He didn't speak English but they always had a sign that he came from the Black Forest area of Germany. The name of your channel caught my attention and am so glad to learn more about the Black Forest area of Germany. Glad I saw your channel and am looking forward to future videos that you post. Those crêpe stations at markets are a trap ;). Our children always wanted to stop there and usually we did. So as a kind of defense we started making them at home. That didn't turn out as planned either, as these little devils somehow managed to turn that into a tradition and now we're having crêpe for lunch pretty much every single wednesday. And all hell breaks lose, if we skip that. ;)

It is easy to make. You get those flat wire "cages" for putting fish on the BBQ in camping and outdoor stores. All you need then is two lengths of hardwood, hinges and some hooks. You fix the hinges between the pieces of wood so that you can put them up like a big A over your BBQ. Screw the hooks into the wood so that they can hold the wire cages for the fish. When the fish is done from one side, pull the cages out, turn them over and slide them under the hooks again so that the other side gets the smoke and heat. When you add hickory or oak flakes to the glowing coal you get the fine smoke flavour as well.

6:45: "Hallo, Ich hätte gerne eine Feuerzangenbowle" (with an accent, but still: in perfect German... absolutely no English) - vendor answers first by asking - in German- for confirmation of what he understood, and then by saying *in English: "six Euros"* ;-)

Hey I tried! hahah. 😂 Next year I'll work on perfecting my German accent a bit better.
@tobyk.49113 жыл бұрын
@@TypeAshton If this was "trying", then it was very successful :-) ... as I wrote: perfect (standard) German, just enough of an accent to recognise that German is apparently not your native language. ... just 2 small differences: 1. I can't really describe the difference, but your pronunciation of "ich" showed a bit that you may not be a native German speaker, and 2. the more noticeable difference was your pronunciation of the letter "z" in the word Feuer[z]angenbowle ... you said "s", while the z in German is rather spoken as "ts" (like in the word Tsunami) ... so, maybe just practice a bit more the German pronunciation of some words with "z" - and then nobody will assume to speak with an American when you order your Feuer[ts]angenbowle next year ;-) (... or maybe the vendors at this Weihnachtsmarkt are just very experienced with English speaking tourists? I don't know - are there many foreign tourists?)
