Ahh, Spawn #5, not only the most infamous, but also the most elusive back in 1993! There is no back issue I remember trying to track down more vividly than Spawn 5! My friends jumped on Spawn right when it first came out, and after reading their copy of the first 5 issues, I had to get them all! I managed to pick up all the issues from 1-10 fairly easily, and started buying it monthly when #11 came out, but that summer of 1993, in between 7th and 8th grade, as my family went on various vacations around the west coast, I made my mom stop at every comic shop in every town we went through! Needless to say, she got a bit frustrated and couldn’t understand why I needed THIS particular issue so badly! Well, of course I wasn’t going to divulge the contents of said issue to her, just told her I HAD to collect every issue. Countless comic book stores from Santa Barbara up to Crater Lake I searched….And finally in some small town in the neighboring state of Oregon, I finally secured my gory prize! Although my family photos mostly burned up in my moms house in the “camp fire” in Paradise, CA in November 2018, I think I still managed to save a copy of the photo of me holding that comic outside the store I bought it from, with the biggest smile a kid could muster! And just like you guys, once Todd stopped doing the art, my interest quickly diminished, and I stopped collecting them around #39. But that first year was so good, and #’s 4 and 5 were especially violent and awesome.

Neat! We must be around the same age, i was buying Spawn off the newsstand in middle school and got the first 10 issues EXCEPT NO. 5! Still kicking myself for that!

This is Todd's best work as a writer. It's a story that you can read once as a kid and it sticks with you forever.

Gotta say, I really like/prefer that darker, gritter paper from the first 8 issues. The glossy stock Oliff pushed for on issue 09 an beyond never lived up to it.

when i was 12 ('92) i got into comics and started buying spawn off the newsstand from issue #1. This was the only one of the first 10 that i missed and i''m still kicking myself. I still have 1-4 and 6-11 in NM

Iconic. I was probably 12 when I saw this and I was really new to comics, but was a big Stephen King and horror novel/movie fan. This issue solidified everything for me as a comic fan and creator. Superheroes AND horror?! Huge impact. I still remember feeling scared of Billy Kincaid and I wanted him stopped while I was reading this. So seeing that ending blew me away. That image is absolutely burned in my brain. And I totally appreciated your reference to it in Red Room, Ed!!

90's comics were fantastic, raw skill leveraged by technology (Amiga? Macintosh?) I love the artwork, lettering, and panel design is super slick! Spawn was definitely Rated R!

Thanks for posting this, guys! Spawn #5 & #8 are some of my go-tos to introduce friends who may not necessarily be into comics. How 'bout a follow up video of Spawn #8, fellas? Love the channel-keep it up. 🤘🏼

I love the note at the bottom of the letters page. "ATTENTION: I will not be appearing at Atomic Comics in Phoenix! The owner is lying." I need to know more.
@DoktorRockszo2 жыл бұрын
A few issues after this one the owner of Atomic Comix wrote in to protest the call out. Apparently he was in the habit of announcing comic creators for signing appearances before actually booking them. Todd, naturally, wasn't on board with this, particularly since if a deal couldn't be worked out, the comic shop owner would make it sound like the creator cancelled and Todd had never missed a scheduled appearance. And, y'know, it is just a generally dickish way for the shop owner to do business.

The very issue that made me have to sneak Spawn comics into the house like how some kids used to sneak porno mags! I did that with porno mags, too, but that's another story.

Damn. I read a few issues of spawn years ago and decided to start collecting origins. Well it led me down a rabbit hole to collect the entire readable collection. I did forget this issue. I just started re reading it a week ago. When i got to the part were he was glueing fingers on the wall it got hard to read. I dont know how i forgot this issue but i did and it is definatly a fucked up issue. I still havent read past origins 2. I decided i had to collect everything before starting to read. After i realized there were no collected editions for 123- 149 it took me a few years to catch up. I now have every readable comic as well as king spawn and gunslinger and have yet to still read past origins #2. Let's just say im taking my sweet ass time.
