Thanks again Michael... Just finished watching. Love. The bit about the dog world. The few carts and cables I kept all do amazing synergy in my system. As for digital I agree.. I feel the RTR with tube is best to my taste now. Taking digital to tape does indeed smooth out things for my ears. But hey.. It is what it is.. Merci Beaucoup Monsieur

Loved every second! Plus, a trip down memory lane. In 2011 or so, a pipe broke. In the room were 700 ~ 1000 radio station promo records in crates (long story) from the 60's to late 70's, most still in shrink wrap. Others were barely played. I had shoeboxes of Shure cartridges in aluminum and wood presentation boxes, and lots of the green (pretty sure they were green) body Grado's, which I assume were cheapos- all given to me- and many in the original packaging. Also, 7 or 8 Dual and Thorens turntables, and one Shure (prototype?) with magnetic platter bearings- yes, it levitated! I don't think it ever went to market. After the water incident, I loaded all of it into a dumpster. Yes, I did. It pains me deeply now. The memory was triggered by your Ortofon story, except I guessed vinyl was dead. Sigh. I'm an EE. Interconnect cables was a heavy lift. I got the math, but it was a so what- until I did the rental thing. When I now have a 'gentleperson's' discussion, I suggest that they try toeing their speakers- one or both- in or out about 1/4 to 1/2". If they can hear that, then they WILL hear a cable. They also go away and I get some peace. I will now send them to this video. Heh, heh, heh... Power cables made perfect sense to me. Component power supplies have an 'impedance frequency response', and designer's go to great lengths to get that right (it should be zero at all frequencies, but that's not possible). The nature of the input power transformer- among other things- puts that supply impedance in parallel with the impedance of your power line. And it can make a whopping difference! Of course, when the designer's fiddled with the supply, it was heavily influenced by THEIR power line or whatever stuff they are using to decouple the same. No matter how you slice it, it makes you crazy.

Thanks Michael. I thoroughly enjoyed this talk. I’ve had many MM phono carts over the years, mostly budget or lower mid priced offerings, but I recently acquired a Shure V15 type III, on a donated turntable, complete with original Shure 35HE stylus. It sounded pretty good after a few hours, but just last week I replaced that stylus with a new Jico SAS-B and wow. I’m hooked.

Michael, you need to try a set of analogue interconnects that I build, I'd say you would be hard pushed to get a better set than what I build, great video by the way👍

I have used ortofon catridges since 1976 with the fist MC20(blue) with MCA-76 and T-20. Did use concorde MC200, MC20 Super, MC30 Super later, and the last one is now Jubilee I still use. Is the most neutral of these catridges. It has more details, wide soundstage and speed I really love. I use a handmade Dynamic Precision RIAA(balanced) amp. One of the best made in Scandinavia. The Cadenza Black has the same data as the Jubilee. It's cost about $2600 here in Norway. If I want to rebuild the Jubilee at ortofon, it will cost about $ 1400. I can get a new Cadenza Black for about $2200. Best regards from Norway, and have a good sounding Merry Christmas🎄

The moment I heard a cable work its magic during playback, I knew it was better. Going back to what I was using previously was objectively worse. Then putting the better cable back brought the same level of improvement. Anyone who says cables don’t make a difference is not being truthful. The cables you use seem pretty enormous and that might be a challenge, but if you have the resources and they release the system from the limitations that hold music reproduction back, it’s worth using them. Mains cables, interconnects and speaker cables all make a difference.

I remember my dad buying a Shure V15 tyoe 3, he'd just bought his first Quadrophonic JVC CD-4 (CD then ='d Channel Discreet for JVC early to mod 1970'sl Quadro' Sysem with decoder & extra smps & speakers. The JVC CD-4 system abdolutley relied upon the reproduction of a 30'Khz carrier wave thst few cartridges could reach, so it vsme from Japan with a short list cartridges that could teproduce the inaudible cartier wave that the decoder needed to decode the 4 fiscreet channels from the Quadrophonic records that catered for the CD-4 system. The Sure V15 tupe 3 was on the list, as well as a fsntsstic dounding JVC cartridge with a (early to mid 1970's 'Shibata' stylus. P.S. Sony had their S.Q. Quadrophonic systrm & Sansui had their Q.S. quadrophonic system. So my dad had to have sll 3, the record labels would dubsctibe to one of the 3 systems. It eas doomed to fail & s dhort lived fad for my dad who glafky returned to stereo by stashing near hslf his systrm away, i'd just dropped acid for my first time in 1973 at 16, when D.S.O.T.M. by floyd came out ehen i first heard it in Steteo. I was not impressed eith yhe Quadtophonic S.Q. version, it just sent the bells atound the 4 speskers, nothing ehat the engineers of the dound wanted & the rest was just like 4 channel steteo with "gimmicks" yhroen in. I swear my 1973 original sounded better on a steteo thsn the "compatible with stereo" Quad- encoded L.P. did. Yet idiots inc' dome i knew, have told me Quadrophonic L.P.s sound better than steteo ones on a stereo, WTF? becsuse of sn sdded 30'Khz Csrrier wave?? but regaurdless, they sre sll wrong. It was sll these prople's guess, one a s/h record shop owner / ftiend & bit of slan idiot, it turned out

Years ago I obtained a Shure v15 type 3 from a man that gave it to me because it has a broken cantilever. Watching this makes me want to buy a new stylus.

As a shoe size denier incarnate, this rubs me the wrong way!!! 😀 The only thing I don’t like about vinyl that it’s so damn expensive (media, TT that competes with modest digital). One day when my system, room and power is all sorted, I’ll get into vinyl for real - if I can still hear and afford it by then 😅

I have the Amazon Basics cable unfortunately... Matter for fact is that not all of us have the budget to spend hundreds on one cable.. while I do wish to upgrade... I can't.. not yet anyway. It's a "has to do" situation for me currently.

That's perfectly fine, at your stage first focus on the components that make up your system. Because it's like salt and pepper for your system. When your system is set up how you like it you can start testing cables and see how much salt and pepper you like to add. Don't and I repeat DON'T start trying to fix a system you don't like with cables, it will cost you more than just changing the components.

@@MrBouncingDeath absolutely. And based on the system that I have I will upgrade to cables I suppose that also are on par which the value of the system I have. First I think Cartridge upgrade.. once that's done cables. It's going to be a lifelong passion so step by step 🙂

@@RomanLothar1986 Actually I would refrain from buying too many cables. A standard net cable you get with the amp etc. is pretty good (it makes your system behave more linearly and also more toned down, or meek). As soon as you go for low level cables they will add certain things or emphasize highs or lows etc. that is exactly what you don't want as Mr. Fremer has said you want the cable to go out of the way of the music. You don't want to hear cables. So low level audioquest and Furutech etc. (also MIT, and other cable makers) will add a lot of sound to your system, but when you upgrade certain components you will notice it's a fake sound. That's why I went for lower level oyaide for my usb cable (class a from them is very good) and also for audio note isis cable with 037 oyaide connectors. Those have a pleasant sound that doesn't add too much to the system. I would love to own those audioquest cables that Mr. Fremer has, those sound very very good but also are way too expensive for me. But for me audio note LX cables for my speaker cables are also very nice. So keep your standard cables, first go for high end components then add the cables. I recently bought the technics R1000 and now will upgrade my speakers (after I safe for a couple of years) to round out the system) and will in turn not upgrade my cables for now.

I wish you would have spoke about DENON MC carts. but this video is very informative and I enjoyed learning about the Shure carts, an ol friend bought the (type3 V15, i beleive)when it hit the market and it was a beauty and sounded fantastic. Thanks again for your time.

theres a specific hi-end line of products from denon engineers in the 80s that went by the company name of "highphonic", apparently had fantastic offerings and theyre exceedingly rare

Some interesting cartridges, but you should take the effort to research them if you forgot about their background. The Fuuga is NOT made by Haruo Takeda from Miyabi fame but by his dealer and a young engineer that together tried to recreate the Miyabi sound and flavour.

Don't Grado cartridges count? I have a soft spot for MI, but you don't really see the benefits till you get into the London Decca designs. I have a Jubilee and a Reference, and the latter is my second best cartridge. An MP-500 comes close, and is better than my Grado Statement 3 and SS Sussurro MkII, but that Reference....is only beaten by a BM LP-S. I'm sure there are better still out there, but beyond my budget.

Stanton 680/681. Very versatile. Flat frequency response. Wonderful sound stage. Has a sister line in Pickering. All the different styli are interchangeable. Still my first choice since 1978.

I have on pet peeve and that's thick cables that look like they come from a power station and should be 100's of feet underground. I just hate them. Cost no problem diameter yes a very big problem!!!

There is one point connecting "analog audio world" and "digital audio world". To have a realy, REALY good sound you spend tons of money here and here....
