Snipers have the most powerful ability in any RTS game, the ability to kite everything in the game (excluding other snipers and battleships). As long as you micro properly and have enough space to move, tanks are no match for snipers.

The thing is, is it the most op tower even for late game or should i train the heavy tanks?

Heavy tanks are obviously better in the late game, but the thing sniper has going for him is his cheap cost and potential to win early and mid game when enemy isn't expecting, using snipers don't get to late game. Also the Strat is very fun to use, recommend it!

Also, as other users noticed, the sniper obviously had a long range meaning it can kite enemies. (Kite-lure enemies while also dealing damage to them, without receiving any to yourself) meaning, if you can control snipers good enough, you can defeat any unit including heavy tanks. Kiting doesn't work for battleships and snipers tho.
