I never understood how violinists determine where to put their fingers There are no frets! **confused guitarist sounds**

muscle memory :) after some time you intuitively know where to put your fingers

It’s not just violins, it’s also cellos, violas, double basses, and trombones. And the answer is muscle memory

We slide to the notes and stop when we hear the correct pitch.. then after a while we can estimate where the finger approximately should project towards.. then our ears make our fingers pinpoint and drill down into the exact pitch
