Strictly speaking when you are winded or "have the wind knocked out of you", what is happening is that your diaphragm (the muscle below your lungs) gets shocked into spasm, which in turn makes it incredibly hard to properly breath. Ordinarily when you breath in, the diaphragm contracts allowing your lungs to inflate, but when it gets jolted or jostled hard and suddenly it can stop contracting for a while meaning your chest cavity doesn't have enough room to fill your lungs. Compounded with the fact that not being able to breath properly makes most people go into slight anxiety shock is why being winded is such a shitty feeling.

When you "get the wind knocked out of you", from what i was informed happens is your diaphragm actually stops working for a bit. Without your diaphragm moving up and down you cant intake or exert air
