Could you make a video on Black Magic Cinema Cameras? Mainly having a discussion on how beginner filmmakers would use cameras that are a step under the industry standard cinema cameras used on high end productions. It may be worth it to talk about the DSLR revolution and the use of phones to tell stories for people who are starting out of don't have the funds as independent filmmakers.

I don't know if this is up your alley, but it would be really cool if you ever spoke about "affordable" cameras that are used in high profile productions, either as main cameras, B cams or even crash cams. It would be really cool to see what your picks could be from this incredibly oversaturated market.

It does seem logical for him to go to a part 3 (S35 > large format > medium format). If he does medium format, I'd be very interested by his take on lenses. It seems like medium format lenses are so good that they have a "3d" feel to them that I rarely see in S35. Or perhaps it's the size of the sensor or the fact that these cameras are only used by the most highly skilled crews on Earth lol!

@83442handle3 жыл бұрын
IMAX cameras are almost impossible to use because of weight/noise and almost no one uses them for an extended percentage of a movie with the exception of Nolan having an unlimited budget. We will probably never see a digital version in our life time as the sensor size would have to be too big(unless they have an array guess)....not even high end Phase One cameras for still shoot with a sensor size that large. Probably the best we will ever see is a digital cine version using a 53.4 x 40.0mm thats closer to traditional 645 format film which would be pretty amazing(though do have video capabilities for this but nothing in a high end cine camera).

Awesome use of Zack Snyder's Army of the Dead. I'm a huge supporter of his (given all that's happened to he and his family as well as the artistic sabotage that happened to him), and I feel like some of the more technical creative decisions he made on that film mostly went unnoticed or talked about by most people. Working with red on his first digitally shot film using rehoused Canon Dream lenses set at 0.95f it looks stunning in my opinion. The way he tells his stories through imagery along with his style makes him one of the most prominent influential filmmakers working today, to me. It would be cool if you made a 'Cinematography/directing style' on Zack or his main DP Larry Fong. Love your videos, thanks for the work you put into them.

Unless they changed something, I thought the F65 only output scaled down 4K as the sensor was 8K but they didn’t design it for 8K delivery due to storage/tech/whatever. Seemed like a great camera, the “Evil Dead” remake was so crisp! However, the FX9 seems to be along the same lines with its 4K-only output despite the higher resolution sensor.
@ForeverYoung0073 жыл бұрын
Thank you for this. It would be great if you can elaborate on what you think gives certain movies a film look. I always thought its not just post processing as some say as some newer movies, especially on Netflix, are really looking clinical and extremely digital if that makes sense. One more modern film that comes to mind that has that older film look vibe is "Nightcrawler (2014)". What is interesting in this movie , there are some parts that look to be more filmic than others with prominent pleasing film grain.

7:00 - "Using Red with ARRI acessories slows down production". Simple... Use ARRI cameras with ARRI acessories. If you love RED... Use RED cameras with RED acessories. It's simple as that. No need to have a headache trying to match gears from one system to another when you can choose to use only one them.

Yeah, except RED made their 3 Axis lens control system in 2013, nobody bought it and nobody has it - at least not the rental companies in my market. Whereas Arri follow focus units are industry standard and ubiquitous.

Can we please have a video comparing all the Arri Alexa models with each other and why DP selects the one to go with? Thanks!
@jeyycie36563 жыл бұрын
A really nice video once again, but I have a disclaimer ; it kind of soft-triggers me whenever I hear "Large Format", because it's absolutely not. Sorry Arri, but large format is waaaaye larger, hence the name, a negative of at least 4"x5", ther's also 10"x8" which is enormus. I talked about those cameras as Full frame or Vistavision, but not large format because it doesn't mean anything, and the Alexa 65 and 65mm/IMAX would be then closer to real medium format.
@ChrisGeden3 жыл бұрын
Is the term Large Format the same in stills as it is in cinematography? I ask because the terms High Key and Low Key aren’t the same between stills and motion picture.
@jeyycie36563 жыл бұрын
@@ChrisGeden 35mm is a standard from more than 120 years, and the difference is that motion picture cameras were easier to produce and more reliable by scrolling the film up and down, so it became standerdize, the film used for stills is identical in terms of dimensions, but is scrolled on the side, making the wider photography "Full frame" (36mmx24mm) standard. Standards are important, and in motion picture there was Vistavision, and those cameras scrolled the film horizontally like stills, making a frame almost as big as full frame. So Yes it is the same, plus Arri and Sony made their new sensor to match both the ratio (3:2) and dimensions of Full Frame, so their's no debate about that. And I don't know who told you that, but high key and low key are identical everywhere, that's a basic principal, you set the scene dark and make the subject bright to mark contrast, or set the scene bright and the subject dark. Of course there's loads of nuances and subtleties but the principal is the same.

Also I disagree with your statement on film cameras, their are way more options out there, and the Arricam is nice but only came out in the 2000's, and the Arriflex 535 and 435 are really good and where the industry standards cameras along side the Panavision XL2 and Platinum. (there's also the Arri 235, but came out too late to reach it's potential, digital was already eating it's way in). There are also Moviecam cameras, but they are less common and not all rental houses have them. Side note : The Arricam was actually a rebranded camera that the Arri group purchased and slightly modified, it's nice and lightweight but the mechanisms I heard is a little less durable than the 435 and 535, and the loading is slightly more cumbersome.

Advantages of large format cameras: *shallow depth of field that super 35 can't achieve *noiseless image *better lowlight performance *more light is capture because of the sensor size resulting an image that has more detail especially in 8k.
