This video is a vlog of our visit to the big Flea Market in rue de Bretagne in the 3rd arrondissement, one of the most popular flea markets in Paris. We thought we were hard working enough to go to this popular flea market in the morning, which only takes place twice a year, but we were ...... so behind!　We were surprised to see the huge crowd at 10am on Friday. But as a very popular flea market, there were so many wonderful things in all the shops. It was really happy & fun treasure hunting day!

The "fabric" you said people used to use consists of two handmade blankets. The one on the right is made up of small hand-crocheted "granny squares" which are crocheted or sewn together to make an "afgan." This is still a very common hobby in the US. The one on the left is a quilt. Originally quilts were made out of old clothes that were no longer usable. The clothes were cut into small pieces and sewn together using different named quilt patterns (there are hundreds) or haphazardly without patterns and called crazy quilts. They were recycling at it's best and old ones are now highly sought after and expensive. But quilting is a very popular hobby in the US and in the last 20 years also in Europe and Japan. But now instead of using worn out clothes, people buy new fabric (100% cotton typically) by the yard or "fat quarters" - yardage cut for quilters to buy, and then cut into small pieces and sewn together. In the US millions of women quilt, have quilting clubs, quilting shows, etc. After the top is pieced in the chosen pattern, it is laid on top of a backing piece and a cotton, wool, or synthetic bat for warmth. The three pieces are put on a huge frame and all the ladies gather around for a "quilting bee" where they stitch through the three pieces by hand to secure the batting in place. Nowadays quilting bees are not common. Instead women quilt the pieces by sewing machine or special quilting machines either by themselves or sending them to specialists to finish. A binding is sewn around the edges to finish the quilt. Quilts are labor intensive and as often as not are hung on the wall as art displays though if course people still use them as bedding too.
