That’s actually kind of a heartbreaking story. This is the only case I’ve _ever_ heard, of a person subjecting themselves to the horrid, immoral procedures and rituals of becoming a lich, out of remorse, fear, and regret. It’s not like you just cast a spell and then, poof, you’re a lich. No, we all know the truly gruesome and unspeakable acts required to _descend_ to lichdom. I wonder where the soul of the former Dunmer ended up.

I am considering making this a kind of plot in a DnD campaign. Party sets out to defeat a lich, not knowing the creature was a guardian and not a menace. Even the developers responsible for coming up with the ring obviously looked a lot at LOTR here. A powerful ring which corrupts it's keeper, made by a wizard in a dark tower, in a dark, ashy land, and then it ends up deep underground, kept by a ruined person, very similar to Gollum. Even Gollum having it for around 500 years is close to how long the lich guarded this one, and replace Bilbo finding it with the Nerevarine. All they really need now is someone to toss the thing into Red Mountain.
