I think it's fine that this is getting sold on Steam. Scott made a game which is really unique, and in the first moment you would think that anything similar is a fangame and shouldn't be sold in any way without Scott's permission. However, technically Scott made a new genre of haunted animatronics and while this game really reminds of Sister Location it's still its own game with its own characters (even if similar to Sister Location), its own story and its own gameplay, its own assets and its own code (at least I hope so). I wouldn't say that this is enough to get taken down from Steam, just because it is a really obvious FNAF inspired game. If every game similar to another one would get taken down on Steam and other platforms we really wouldn't have a lot to play, but in the first moment it's almost logical to think that games like these should get taken down, although it uses a really unique genre which only one person used commercially on Steam yet, until this game came out.
@krillinslosingstreak2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, if I’m thinking about what a FNaF fangame is, I think it needs to use intellectual property that actually belongs to FNaF, (IE characters, locations, etc…), not just be in a similar style. Of course, if it markets itself as a FNaF fangame, then that is the developer’s choice to connect it to FNaF, even if there’s an apparent lack of FNaF IP assets. I haven’t watched the whole video, so I can’t make a complete judgement on this particular game just yet.

my issue with it is the theming doesn't match the threats. You're in a school right? Why is there robot wolves and stuff? Feels like they wanted animatronics because "that's what fnaf has". Technically it's allowed, If I make a platformer and say Mario and Sonic "inspired" me it doesn't mean its a fan game of Mario or Sonic so long as the things in the game are original to the creator. Now it doesn't mean the game is any good, but because the only mention of Fnaf is a small line of text saying it's inspired and there is no sight or sound of one of the Freddy's animatronics the creator is within their rights to try to earn money off their project just like Case Animatronics did. Hell Popgoes could've probably gotten away with it back when the original came out if the story wasn't so tied into the fnaf lore. If the culture didn't build itself on Game jolt we probably would've seen a lot more of these types of games trying to make money off the new Genre that Scott Cawthon created.

I know a lot of people defend the game saying it’s only inspired by fnaf and not a fan game, but I think it’s important to keep in mind just how much is being lifted directly from fnaf. The “woodens” are mini-reenas, the animatronics look in the same style as fnaf, the building designs could easily be a dupe of sister location, etc etc. You don’t have to use the same characters and names as something to be ripping it off. Like if we saw people fighting in space with light sticks we would immediately think it’s just like Star Wars, y’know? It’s fine to take inspiration, but this is just a bit too far, and since all SC asked is do what ever you want w his ip as long as you don’t charge for it, I think it’s fair to say 8 dollars is a little outrageous, especially given the quality of the game. If the game dev just changed a few things, it’d be fine. Still not worth 8 dollars, but better than being hated for being a paid “fan game”.
@AnglosArentHuman Жыл бұрын
"Like if we saw people fighting in space with light sticks we would immediately think it’s just like Star Wars" Small issue: The concept of "people fighting in space with light sticks" predates Star Wars by several decades. Duh it can stay on Steam. If games had to be taken down because of similarities so many large companies would have their way with the market. Inspired works or spiritual successors would not be allowed to exist as paid products. And if they companies can remove games from store fronts, they probably can use their powers to remove fan games that are only inspired. Nintendo already removes fan games that use their properties. Imagine if they could remove games that just look similar and play similar to their games? Tbf, I think a lot of younger gamers have a "it's a fan game and shouldn't be monetized" because they've grown up in an age of internet we're so many good free fan games have been made and it's set a precedent. It probably also stems from the "it's an indie game so it should cost less" mentality. Either way, don't sell yourself short. If you make a good game, don't feel ashamed to charge money for it unless it blatantly uses copyrighted assets. That will get you in trouble.

Otherwise, it's as normal as unfair, comparable to game companies merrily hoarding the ideas and work of their employees bc of intellectual property and what not. To me a fan game takes characters or story elements from the original series and either expands upon it or reimagines it. I don't believe game mechanics, genres, settings can be protected under copyright. Games like Minecraft wouldn't exist if that were the case. The only thing Scott really owns are the characters, brand names, locations, whatever he made solely for his games. Technically Candy's, Popgoes (after removing Shadow Bonnie), Flumpty's could all have been sold from the start because though they share mechanics, they have their own characters, locations, story, ect. I guess my way of dealing with nostalgia will be joining the community once again. And just now I realized why I quit the community.. FNAF seemed dead to me. But now, now I'm not so sure.. The fanverse stuff and fnaf+ look pretty much alive and active! I can't wait to play fanverse games and especially FNAF+ for that nostalgic but refreshing experience. And all of this thanks to this channel and new amazing TLT song, that reminded me that fnaf is a thing.

10:05 i'm gonna have a bit of a controversial opinion i think it's fine it's obviously inspired by FNaF, but I wouldn't say it's to the degree of copyright infringement

Reminder that Scott didn't make the horror genre, he just popularized it.

But yeah, this game is trash.

He didn’t popularise it lol. If anything did in recent years, slender did. Scott made ‘horror’ for babies

1:09 God bless 😭 LASO master was the biggest pain in the ass to get out of any achievement I have ever tried to get in a video game

The game looks good and actually peaked my interest a bit. However, if the dev could tweak the game a bit then that would be great. Also, if I’m not mistaken (though, feel free to correct me if I’m wrong. I am just saying what I heard long ago) Scott didn’t allow fnaf fan games to be paid or have in app purchases (Again, I may be wrong about this) so if the dev could at least lower the price or make it free then that would be another bonus.

Honestly if it was gonna be actually marketed they should've just made their own art style and characters, actually selling it as a product while blatantly even stating at the end credits that it was inspired off of another game is just a lawsuit waiting to happen, especially when certain characters look practically identical to one another that someone who's seen the originals even just a few times could tell where the copy was traced from

I think the reason that this game was able to marketed and sold for 8 dollars, is because while this game is similar towards SL, it technically doesn't infringe on Scott's IP. Remember, while Scott does hold the rights towards the FNAF franchise, he doesn't hold the right to the whole "deadly animatronics" concept. Not trying to defend this person, but I'm just playing the Devil's advocate here.

Holy shit you completed halo 2 on laso. Mad respect dude, that is absolutely incredible
@springkiller14752 жыл бұрын
Even though it's similar, it doesn't use any copyright characters from fnaf, and matpat said it, you can make a fnaf style game, scott can't request it to he taken off, he can't have a copyright of an idea or style, otherwise the game industry would be full of monopolies of specific generes

I think it's good enough visually to stay on steam, but it would be cool if this video got seen by the dev and they fixed the gameplay
@iancole22792 жыл бұрын
It has the right to stay up because it doesn’t use any of Scott’s intellectual property. FNAC’s could be put on steam too if they wanted too cause gameplay isn’t copyrightable.

What stinks is that under the fnaf inspiration credit, it also says it was inspired by Mystery Case Files, which is sad because sense those games aren't nearly that bad. I would like to see people like Dawko try and play a game like 13th Skull, Shadow Lake, and/or Dire Grove. Feels right up their alley.
@noyz-anything2 жыл бұрын
not really a fnaf fangame tbh. maybe it was at one point in development, but in the state you played it in, it's distinct enough in gameplay, characters, and story to qualify as its own beast entirely. i know this has been said but i think it's important to reiterate.

I salute your LASO achievement, I am actually on my way to LASO Master myself. My brother and myself are attempting to beat every single halo campaign on LASO, currently we have completed Halo Reach. A true achievement of itself but no feat matches Halo 2, I salute you again. Stuck on Halo:CE but we're pushing through. Love your videos, fnaf is also great, second to Halo B)
@animatnetic25452 жыл бұрын
It does have the right to be sold as it has none of the characters as FNaF. Sure, it was heavily inspired but Scott doesn't necessarily own the genre. So as long as it has origional characters, it kind of can get away with it.
