In July 1845, two British expedition ships, the Terror and the Underworld, led by Sir Franklin, went to the Arctic waters and then mysteriously disappeared. 129 elite crew members, including Franklin himself, were never seen or heard from again. When his expedition set sail again, all thought success was assured.
Some whalers saw Franklin's fleet in Arctic waters and nothing was ever heard of them again. By the end of 1848, the British were convinced that Franklin's party had disappeared, though searchers never found any credible evidence.
