An elder C.S. Lewis looks back on his remarkable journey from hard-boiled atheist to the most renowned Christian writer of the past century.
The film features award-winning actor Max McLean as the older Lewis and Nicholas Ralph - breakout star of PBS Masterpiece’s All Creatures Great and Small - as young Lewis. Beautifully filmed in and around Oxford, this engaging biopic follows the creator of The Chronicles of Narnia from the tragic death of his mother when he was just nine years old, through his strained relationship with his father, to the nightmare of the trenches of World War I to Oxford University, where friends like J.R.R. Tolkien challenge his unbelief.
Written for the screen and directed by two-time Emmy and BAFTA winner Norman Stone (BBC’s Shadowlands), The Most Reluctant Convert brings to life the spiritual evolution of one the 20th century’s sharpest minds and keenest wits.

I was brought up as an atheist but I had read the books of Tolkien and Lewis as a boy and am forever grateful for the concepts of honor, humility, courage and grace that those books encouraged. The clear ideas of right and wrong. Light and darkness. A moral compass for life and the imagination. I later came to trust Jesus as my saviour and I learned to appreciate him as a great apologist for the faith. Thank you to FPA for bringing this to the screen. Maybe we shall see a film of "The Screwtape Letters" that you have staged so brilliantly?

I always fancied myself a Taoist - it was C.S. Lewis and The Screwtape Letters that forced me to reconsider Christianity. I still don't know if I can truly call Christ my saviour, but I'm much closer to doing so after reading this man's work.

I did consider myself once an academic person only... Given the fact that Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, the inventor of the Binary System, one of the Great three rationalists in the Renaissance is theist, wrote the "Theodicy" popularized Monadism with God as the source.. Newton. There is a dispute who made calculus. Either Newton or Leibniz, but Newton wrote 7,500 pages for the Bible in manuscript, which mainly focuses on theology. The father of the Big Bang. Georges Lemaitre was a Belgian Priest, and stated "Religion and Science" don't need to contradict." Basically. A great percent of the scientists in the Renaissance are theologians..

You (if you are not ignorant) should know that pagans borrowed concepts from every religion including Judaism and Christianity. he also admitted that his stories were not direct allegories, but he wrote them as a sort of fanciful mythology with Christological ideas underneath. If you can't keep fantasy and reality straight, I guess stay away from any kind of reading of any fiction whatsoever in fact stay away from reading history because that is chock-full of the authors bias as well-meaning as they may be. In fact just shut off your brain because you don't know when your bias might be influencing your thoughts either. 🙄

C.S. Lewis is played byMax McLain who recorded the entire Bible on CD. I have the CD set. McLain also has done live on-stage (monologues?) of several books of the New Testament and The Screwtape Letters that are just incredible! He really brings them to life. Brilliant performances. I saw The Screwtape Letters in a theater and one of the New Testament books on KZbin years ago.

Thank you for making this film! I stumbled upon this trailer yesterday (11/15/21) by accident. Both my dad and I are CS Lewis fans. (Him even more than myself.) My dad even had an opportunity to attend Oxford a number of years back for a conference and visited the places Lewis frequented. Tonight, I took him to see the film as an early birthday present. WE BOTH LOVED IT and talked about it the entire way home from the theater! It was well acted and rich with meaning. We both hope it makes its way to DVD or digital release in the near future so we can see it again!

This was an excellent recreation of the stage performance, and the dramatizations of scenes were so immersive that it blew me away. The only criticism I would say is that I wish more described by Lewis was visually reenacted, but I'm sure lockdown restrictions and budget were already spread thin considering the quality of what we got. Also the film feels a tad short because it is based upon "Surprised By Joy", an autobiographical work Lewis wrote relatively early in his career about his journey from atheism to theism to Christianity. In short, would best compare this to restaurants where the serving is a bit small, but the quality of food, culinary craft and wine pairing are second to none. God bless!

Just seen this today -Had to travel by boat and train from Isle of Wight to Portsmouth! Hahaha! But it was absolutely worth the trip - really excellent and thought provoking - but quite intense - so much to take in ..I feel I want to watch it a few more times. Hope they bring it out on DVD . This film is what drew me to the book Phantastes. It's an exquisite, incredibly unique read, truly one of many from a bygone age.

I can relate to Jack Lewis. I didn't found God in the Bible or prayer, but in fantasy, myths, and fairy tales.
