When my kids were younger they were expected to clean their bathroom and pick up their bedrooms over the weekend. If it all got done by Monday evening they got their allowance. But if they had toys left out on Monday evening I picked them up and required them to pay to get them back. I think it might have been a quarter a toy. I never made much money on that -- they were incentivized to pick up!

I really appreciate the "doom pile" term. Minimal Mom got the ideas of "inventory and bandwidth" into my vocab too. Her videos are a great decluttering source- it's not that you can't clean its that you have too much inventory and don't have the bandwidth to handle it all. Once I realized how certain tasks become a doom situation, I then took the inventory down to an amount I can manage! Thank you for taking the time to chat up this clean, I agree with the other cool kids it makes them so much better! 🤩
@winterroses20204 ай бұрын
Thank you for introducing and pointing out the vocabulary to others!
@mindyourownbusinessshhh14584 ай бұрын
My favorite term I learned from Minimal Mom is the "Time Will Tell" box. During a declutter, if you're having a hard time letting go of some items because you're not sure if you will need them, you can just put those items in a TWT box and write a date that's a year (or 6 months) away, and in the meantime you'll know the items are still there if you need them. However, during that year (or 6 months) if you didn't need the items (or if you forgot you had them), then when you open the TWT box you will be more likely to get rid of those items with confidence. She said you should declutter with confidence, and if it's going to give you anxiety/depression to get rid of an item, then you should wait to make the decision whenever you are confident that you want to get rid of it. I watched a lot of her videos but then I lost interest because it was just her own house in every video and it got too repetitive to me, and I started feeling bad for her family that she was getting rid of so much of their stuff lol... Nonetheless, her idea for making a TWT box helped ease me into getting rid of more stuff in my own time, without triggering my anxiety/depression. Also there's something about the term "Time Will Tell" that sounds very poetic/nostalgic to me for some reason.

I grew up in house like this, and I can tell you that the kids most definitely DO CARE. But they're just kids - what can they do? I once wrote a note to my parents - I was about 15. It said "My chore is to clean the living room, but people sleep on the couch and don't fold their blankets. It creates a huge mess. I'm not doing my chore any more until people start cleaning up after themselves." I'd totally forgotten about that note until I moved out and my dad handed me an envelope of my important papers. Stamped on that letter I'd written so long ago was the word "Received". And that was the end of that.

I know that sticky feeling too well, About 20 years ago I went to a clean and renovate a two bedroom rental unit for the new tenants. Unit was ruined, hardly anything not damaged. Carpet was filthy and needed replacement. I was pulling it all up, but so much soda had been spilled on the carpet by a lounge chair, about a 3 x 3 area was glued to the floor. I had to pour boiling water on a few times, and finally about 40 minutes later it released. Total cost of renovation was over 15,000 dollars. Which was about 10 times the security deposit.

I hope that family learned to at least get the kids involved in cleaning consistently. A friend of mine is in similar circumstances (minus the chickens) but with 3 kids under 5. The way she keeps her house from being in constant chaos is giving the kids chores, no matter how young they are. The 2 year old can clear toys off a table and play quietly in a corner for the rest of cleaning time. The 4 year old can put his clean clothes in his basket. The 5 year old can wipe the tables. And so on. Even when she is dealing with severe fatigue on a given day, the house is usually a quick tidy up and a few passes with the broom and mop away from looking decent.

Love your narrations. I have adhd and autism and i think you are hilarious. Autism funny is different, and a huge relief.

I love your narrations. I listen to you while on the treadmill and have learned so much about how and why peoples houses look the way that they do. I am 62 and a neat freak or that is what my grown kids call me. Not a clean freak let me tell you but everything has a place and should be put there. They on the other hand my kids are more like your ADHD people. This for me is stress. Things should be in a right place but they are not. Also they will not let me put them there. That is the stress. You have helped me come to a mental place to say that this is ok. Thank you for that.

New voice overs are very welcome! It's so interesting to hear what you've learned and now do differently.

This was very cool, Mack, thank you. I'd enjoy any more re-edits you feel up to doing. Been keeping your family in my heart this week, hope everything is going okay. Don't forget to hug your house moose! 🫎❤❤❤

Thanks so much for the re-edit! I think this was the first video of yours I saw and I liked it, but then as I watched your other vids, I really enjoyed your narration. It's a shame she fell off with the cleaning but what can you do, right? Have fun in Nashville!

I'm so glad you narrate 😊 and I like the sped up sounds in-between too. Much better than music

I do like it. Sorry, she stopped paying you. But as you explained, it's just part of it. You're such a good person, my cleaning angel. ❤

❤❤ Thank you!! Yes, please do more re-voice overs on your silent and music videos. Those would be fabulous! And I’d be happy to watch those multiple times as well.

Hi Master! My currently hiperfocus is watching big cleans and reading and watching David Foster Wallace works. Sometimes being autistic is a bless.
