??? The more bands, the more tension is created (And therefore more potential energy), so yes it does 100% matter how many bands he puts... if he could put them all equally tensed which is simply not worth it, the speargun would be HUGE. but it's technically possible

@@H2610_ yes but at some point adding more than the optimal band for power gains will not do anything... the mass of the shaft can only be propelled to a maximum speed. all energy after that point will just be transferred into recoil which in turn will only screw up your shot more and not to mention that even if you were to get the spear shaft to its terminal velocity(broad term as it is not a free-falling object) it will buckle and bend while traveling out of the gun, its an occurrence often associated with archers firing too light arrows from an overpowered bow.

⁠​⁠@@H2610_Throw a feather at 3 varying degrees of your own personal strength. No matter how much force you put into it it barely makes a difference from the first initial relatively light throw. Concept is the same for everything unless the energy potential is from a literal explosion in which case it’s a lot easier to keep pushing velocity into something. But then it also loses stability. Which is why in the extreme cases of this physics lesson, being firearms, you have to start spinning the projectile to keep it stable and the heavier or lighter it is you have to spin it at different speeds in order for it to retain any of that velocity as well as stability. This is also observable in just plain air resistance and fall speed tests against mass. Every mass has a peak velocity and acceleration and has a point that it can’t accelerate anymore. If something falling at it’s max speed was forcibly accelerated faster than it’s peak and threshold. Once that impinging force is removed the falling object slows down even though it’s free falling. If we were in outer space you would be correct but the force would also impinge upon you. But no inside of an atmostphere the OP is absolutely on the right train of thought. There is a point where you can keep adding bands but at some point you could add 10 and barely get the extra velocity of ONE and the projectile will drop that speed QUICKLY after launch as well as making it unstable until the velocity falls to a certain maintainable speed. Without knowing the exact dymnamics weight force of the bands. But let’s say 4 bands would be peak for the example. Adding a 5th you might not even notice. Adding 6 might feel like you thought 5 would. Stepping up to 8-9 would then feel like you added one more again. Then you would have to go to 15-20. It gets exponential and multiplicative to force something to go faster than it wants to inside of an environment that resists it moving from its stationary state.
