When Danielle let out that noise when the prince kissed, he touched/hugged her back at the same time. It was the wounds on her back, after she had been whipped on her stepmother's order & the marks that her "good' step-sister was tending to earlier, that made Danielle yell out when the prince hugged her. The prince didn't know he was hugging her/touching her, where she had recent wounds from the whipping. By the way, I love this movie, and loved the interaction between Danielle and Henry. Just wonderful!

Danielle’s mothers name is Nicole but she was never a Comtesse that was one of the things the step mother was mad about she mentioned something like, “how dare you make your mother a comtesse” Danielle isn’t a servant but they never made clear if she had any title or was just a regular person who’s father had a respectable job. The stepmother was of noble blood as she likes to boast but it’s possible that that her family didn’t have any more money and married Danielle father to maintain a comfortable living which she couldn’t maintain in the end because of her desire to show off and aim to make her daughter a royal. If someone knows more hopefully they’ll make a comment but this is what I got 🤷‍♀️

I was hoping someone would clarify this. Danielle's father was a landed farmer, probably some kind of gentry, but not nobility. The baroness married him for security, and because after his death she mismanaged the farm, they went into debt. I'm not sure how land ownership worked in feudal France, but somehow the Baroness inherited her husband's property, NOT his daughter (maybe he had no male relatives?). So Danielle really was dependent on the Baroness's charity.

One of my two favorite depictions of Cinderella. My other favorite is Rogers and Hammerstein's Cinderella with Brandi. Two vastly different takes on the same story, but both classics. I love how realistic this one is. How flawed and wonderful the characters are. I always adored Jaqueline, how she did things her way and didn't become cruel. The casting of this movie was truly flawless.

47:14 Apparently, something like this happened in real history - a German king besieged a castle, and promised the women that they could leave with anything they could carry. They carried out their husbands. When the king's men complained, the king just replied that he'd given his word.

I love that this movie makes each character so real and multifaceted and nuanced. The stepmother being definitely a bad person, a bad guardian, etc, but she also seems to have truly loved Danielle’s father. That even bad people aren’t one-dimensional. They are people. It’s very “the mundanity of evil” - “evil” isn’t something not of this world. It is very much of this world. It is the accumulation of all the same, awful choices a person makes. That even bad people were someone’s child once, who can love someone, but who are still capable of awful things and those small bits of “good” in them don’t excuse their actions. “Hurt People hurt people.”

She didn't love Danille's father- When Danielle asked her "Did you love my father", the stepmother replied "I barely knew him". I think she was truly distressed at his death but more because she needed someone to take care of her and she didn't want to be stuck managing the estate. Angelica Huston was fabulous in this- as she is in every role.

I love your analytical processing. 🙌🙌 The stepmother was very emotional because her new husband is dead and she is now left in the "country" on a small farm with an extra child. She did not want to be there...she was from the "city"! Did anyone realize that there were in fact 2 Cinderellas?...The younger stepsister was utterly despised by her mother and older sister almost as much as Danielle.

Yeah. Jacqueline doesn't get nearly enough love from the fans of this movie, in my opinion. She was almost certainly in Danielle's position prior to the Baroness marrying her father. Then, with Danielle around, it all shifted down. But instead of joining in on the abuse, she just did her best to avoid it; until she just couldn't. I love that she ends up with Captain Laurent. They deserve each other. ❤😂

For everyone wondering why the Baroness took such offense at Danielle making her mother into a Comtesse, I may have the answer. Comtesse is the French for Countess, which is a higher noble rank than Baroness. So in the Baroness' mind, which is all about intrigue and feuds, Danielle thought so lowly of her that she made her real mother a higher rank than Baroness, out of spite. Nicole may in fact have been a noble courtier while she was alive, just not one with that kind of rank.

I love when movies show romance with a realistic approach; showing us why the romance between two people develop. Not just throwing two people together and expecting us to accept the coupling, just because it's part of the plot. And I particularly love this version of Cinderella, because of that. It presents a romance that can overcome their differences in status. The payoff is better for it.

Kemi thank you so much for this!!! I’m so glad you enjoyed it very much! This is indeed the best authentic version of Cinderella. In Disney’s animated Cinderella, she wears a sparkling light cornflower bluish-gray ball gown with a low-cut neckline, pale cornflower blue bustle, white-capped sleeves, white armpit length opera gloves, a delicate laced white petticoat (or petticoats), and glass slippers topped with sparkly hearts. (It should be noted, though, that the ball gown is often colored light powder blue in merchandise and later productions and was even digitally recolored as such in the original film's DVD and Blu-ray releases.) Her hair is pulled up into a variation of a French twist complimented with a very light cornflower blue band over it with large gems on both ends of the band (in recent merchandise, the two gems of the band have been replaced with diamond earrings). She also wears a simple black choker around her neck. If you’re interested in other “Cinderella” films I highly recommend Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella (1997), A Cinderella Story (2004), and Not The Cinderella Type. For other films with Drew Barrymore: The Wedding Singer, 50 First Dates, Blended, Charlie’s Angel, Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, Never Been Kissed, Music and Lyrics, and The Stand-In. For Angelica Houston: The Addams Family, The Addams Family Values, The Witches (1990), Daddy Day Care, Material Girls, and the Tinker Bell film series. 👩‍❤️‍💋‍👨👡👑🩶🤍🩵💙💜

My favorite Marguerite line is when she has that tantrum right in front of the Queen, then recovers herself and says very demurely, "... There was a bee." 😂Anyway I'm pretty sure there's a line from the Baroness where she says something like "imagine Danielle making her mother a comtesse," so I think Danielle might have lied about that. And her father had no title, he was just a commoner who manged to have some property, which would have left Danielle with nothing but whatever the Baroness didn't manage to squander before her own death. And then third, I think that noise Danielle makes when she's trying to break up with Henry is because he touched her back, which was still sore from the beating.

Ok. As an historian I can answer why Danielle wasn't noble albeit her mother was. This is called Morganatic marriage and it happens when two persons of different noble status marry, for instance a prince and a countess, or a noblewoman and a merchant (the case of Danielle), the ancient regime laws avoid the childs of this union to inherit the title of the higer status partner. Usually this was resolved by "creating" a new title to the partner to equalize him or her to the same rank as his or her fiance/e.
@delinarandoma1053

And I believe a courtier would have to be presented at court, and she was robbed at the chance to debut. So nobody at court knew she existed, only her mother's name was familiar in the previous generation.

@melanie62954
@melanie62954 Жыл бұрын
Doesn't Morganatic marriage only apply to royals themselves though? I thought it was pretty clear that Danielle's mother was not nobility, Danielle just gave herself a title as part of the charade. Danielle's parents really were commoners, albeit wealthy landowners, and the Baroness married her father for security.
@desiredmanga
@desiredmanga Жыл бұрын
@@melanie62954 Not necesarily. A Morganatic marriage can happen when high status nobility marry low status nobility or commoners. What it happens is that the examples of royal families are more depicted than others, but for instance Tycho Brahe whose father was part of the higest nobility, but not royalty, married morganatically to a commoner woman. Also, as you say, it could be a charade, but I always thought that Danielle use of her mother's name and title instead of her father or just her own name (wich would have been a more logical lie in the spot- "my father is this nobleman", "I am comtesse Danielle") and her reticence to give herself the title (She never speaks of her being noble, but using her mother's name is a way of not lying albeit not saying totally the truth) is a sign to me she could be sincere about that. Also the way Rodmila , wich we know is a very prideful noblewoman don't arise any kind of commentary about Danielle using the title of Comtesse with her mother's name in the queen's meeting gives me a hint that Nicole was actually noble.
@melanie62954

And even "Jacqueline" found Love......as her Mother treated her better than Danielle, but not as good as Margarite. Her friend Gustavo got recognition for his Art, by "Divinchie"..... From my own experience I can say that people will believe anything bad others tell them about them, ESPECIALLY when they got told these nasty things from (early) childhood. So when the Baronesse raised Danielle so badly that this girl truly believed she was nothing more than a servant... well. And the fact that she still hoped for her stepmothers love, even after all this time is also relatable. My own mother abused me since I was little and only when I hit my thirties I finally got to the realization that she'll never love me or feel sorry for what she did. Today I'm free, living my life in peace because I cut off all contact. The people who should love and protect you unconditionally can hurt and gaslight you the worst.

About the titles: non royal titles only passed down along the patrilineal line (some countries have changed that and some have eliminated titles altogether). If her mother was a countess, it was because her father was a count. When he died without a male heir, the title went extinct unless the King decides to give it (and the lands that came with it) to someone else. The children would still have been referred to as Lord or Lady (Seigneur or Sieur in France). A widow can continue to use her title but is usually a dowager, meaning the widow of whatever which is why the Baroness can still use her title. Fun fact: the Queen Mum actually was the "Dowager Queen of England" but she hated it so she asked to be called "Elizabeth, the Queen Mother" since she was widow of a former king and mother of a current queen. If Charles dies before Camilla, she will have to be "Camilla, the Dowager Queen" since she would not be mother to the new king.

François I and Henry II were my thirteenth and twelfth great grandfathers. My mother’s father was a direct male-line descendant. My family went to England, then to America where they founded a town in New Jersey called Cream Ridge.

I really like this version of "Cinderella" - especially how Danielle is smart and loves books and isn't afraid to argue an intelligent point, even to the prince. And I like that the price finds that alluring. It seems he likes someone who can challenge his mind. 😊 He's probably only used to girls who fawn all over him and don't have much thought except to land a prince. 😉 I like Angelica Houston's take on the stepmother as well. She's pretty cold, but there are glimmers that show she did care about Danielle's father. It's unfortunate they never had time to be a family before the loss of the father. Maybe the family dynamic would have been better. Instead Danielle had to try to "earn" her stepmother's favor, forever treated like garbage. Just awful.

Property goes to the spouse not the child. Danielle became a servant the moment her father died because the "ruler" of the house decid3d it was so.

When Danielle yelled out in pain, it was because Prince Henry touched her wounds on her back when he kissed her.

47:15 - Danielle's trick was based on real event knows as Loyal Wives of Weinsberg. "The year of our Lord 1140. The king [Conrad] besieged the city of the duke Welf of Bavaria, which was called Weinsberg, and accepted its surrender, having granted with royal magnanimity permission to the wives and other women found there that they might take with them whatever they could carry on their shoulders. Taking thought both for their loyalty for their husbands and the safety of the others, they disregarded their household goods and came down carrying the men on their shoulders. When Duke Friedrich said that such things should not happen, the king, showing favour to the women's cunning, said that it would not be fitting to change his royal word"

She identified him from the crest in his clothes. It's how to identify their level of nobility , it's important because if you don't behave a certain way according to their rank, then you can be punished. Also in some countries in the past if the head of clan dies and any daughters who remain can be considered stripped of rank unless married but who knows maybe because he remarried and she was the daughter of the previous wife? Who knows

This is my absolute favorite Cinderella film next to the Brandy and Whitney Houston version!! I remember when I was 11, I was shown this movie and Girls Just Want To Have Fun. I watched those two movies nearly every day for a month!! And the song during the competition part in GJWHF to this day gets stuck in my head for weeks! I ended up buying the song a couple months ago. It’s just catchy and fun lol. My bf and I loved the reaction 💜 Hope you have a lovely day!

Danielle’s mother could have been a comtesse, it wouldn’t have been improbable for a titled woman to marry a merchant at this point in history. However by pretending to be a woman of high rank by wearing the more expensive clothing of the Baroness and her daughters, Danielle could have been severely punished for breaking sumptuary laws. (Basically laws that stated only the elite could wear and use certain kinds of finery like silks.) She was willing to risk her life for Maurice which shows what a brave character she really was. 🥰 The actor who plays Henry’s first name is pronounced Doo-grey. I’ve been calling him Doug-ray for years 😂 My favorite version of Cinderella! I love how deep you go in discussing this film! ❤❤❤
