No visible line of sight. A whiteout. He's flying instruments only. An everyday occurrence for commercial and private pilots. But the sophisticated systems which guide them down to airport runways are largely unavailable on Everest. I'm guessing he's essentially using the most accurate GPS fix available. Radar. A few other technologies. But in those conditions? It's Russian Roulette. Eventually you're going to land on the loaded chamber ...

About 18,000' is the limit most helicopters can fly, the thin air does not provide needed lift, the cold can freeze hydraulic and other fluids in the engine, and it's just dangerous. Most helis will shed all non-essential weight and have extra-powerful engines for high altitudes. Then, they have to add the weight of whoever they are picking up! Weather is always a factor, you can't just fly IFR (on instruments) there, you have to see in order to land where the injured are. I heard him say 21,000' so he must have a special helicopter. Only one heli has made it to the summit and he had larger rotors and a very special powerful engine besides shedding ALL unnecessary weight! He was test pilot Didier Delsalle from France. It's very chancy to fly up there, it is windy and clouds can close in on you in very short order.

Few factors there...They are oxigen-starved at this altitude and can't think clearly and fast. Also sherpas not speaking fluent English. So as you can see he doesn't blame them for trying to put bags in. Great movie by the way and those pilots are highest class.

Used to be american climbers were like that, just flip a phone and call a chopper if you get in too deep, but these days the yanks ,for the most part are pretty organized and follow the protocols , IE, be ready at the pad, luggage, time, making it easier for the pilot to do his job.. I spoke to a guy that flew up there, he said the worst prepared and most arrogant were from countries with no mountains to speak of... or Balkan's, who seem to think the chopper is their limo once they paid for it, and argue in spite of endangering others.. he claimed Indian groups tried to bribe him to overload the ship, thinking cash beats physics, and has had to physically throw them out of the cabin.. he swears he will never take another S/A group ever, he claimed arrogance beyond arrogance, and they way they treated the Sherpa... He said amature swiss and Austrians try to pass themselves off as aces, though when smoking and hauling up cases of beer, in lieu of equip, he knew he would be seeing them soon enough, besides most just want to party at base camp, and follow the legends like Stek, etc up the mountain, most don't even manage the khumbu Ice fall..shit themselves...some Aussies he said get testy when the chips are down, but are generally like Canadians, and are pretty selfless and good team work when lives are at stake.. He said by far the worst organized and amaturish expedition was from Taiwan, way to much gear, six men with gear enough to overload an mi 8, would not listen to reason, just wanted to adhere to the plan on the clip board.. and as soon as the pilot tried to check the aircraft, they tried to load more useless cargo on the bird..he finally kicked them off, and left them in Lukla ..had they taken off at that weight, they would be dead by now.. he said the leader of the expedition was so incompetent he had no control of his own men, and tried to get the pilot to land at everest, though they only had a permit for Cho Oyo.. and no sherpa help...this meant they were gonna bootleg attempt everest on other peoples ropes, and o's, and on the backs of sherpas they were going to temp away from other teams with a fee extra bucks.. He reported them to Nepali authorities , checked credentials, and not one had set foot on a mountain prior, had they landed in Base camp they would have died in a few days from hape, not having acclimated, and the Sherpa's would have driven them off the mountain had they attempted to bribe them away from other teams..for playing fast n loose with their lives for a few bucks..besides, they barely had enough money for the expedition, so who knows how they planned to pay the Sherpa, the leader said he was going to appeal to them as being an Eastern People , and they they should help them free of charge because of their common origins.. most of these incidences are never made public, he flies rescue out of Yellowknife these days as there are too many himalaya dreamers that think it's safe now due to heli support.. Shriya Shah-Klorfine being one of the best examples of this.. hiking the Toronto ravines in no way prepares one for conditions above Camp 4, though she claimed many times it was safe as a chopper will fish her out of any trouble.. she perished in the death zone where choppers cant fly, Camp 2 on a perfect weather day if yer lucky..yer on yer own till then... prepare, prepare, train, equip, plan for losing part of your team as it will happen at some point, have an emerg contingency plan in place, and obey the orders of the pilot...should it come to that.. these bag loaders represent the worst in mountaineering

I hope the climbers being rescued are complete novices for not understanding why the pilot cannot risk being stranded there. He would need to be on oxygen the entire time. He has just flown up there without any time to acclimatize to the altitude. No experienced climber should be that dumb.

No way I'd do that without a gun. I could see climbers swarming your chopper and refusing to get out or let go and you end up crashing or having to take off without anyone. Arm those poor dudes. I also HIGHLY question the emergency that climber was supposedly going through that he needed an immediate medivac. If you're worried about dying or losing your hands and feet, you wouldn't give a millisecond of thought to your stupid bag of climbing gear. Then once they were in the chopper they looked in pretty decent shape to me. Both could move their hands just fine. I'd be mad as hell if I were that pilot.

Weight. They were at such high altitude with such low air density that you want to take off with as minimum weight as possible. Even a bag could make the helicopter harder to fly at such altitude.
