With the kind of player Firouzja is and the kind of form he is in at the Global Chess League, you would not have expected him to make such an error, but to err is human and this is exactly what happened to Alireza in this encounter against Hikaru Nakamura.

This game is proof that claiming a draw under time pressure is one of the worst things that has happened in chess history. You can also see that blunders are a part of chess and can occur at any moment. In chess, anything can happen at any time.

but there is no time pressure here the problem is aleraza play quickly witout thinking

Well if you look at it from Alireza’s pov, not claiming the draw was the worst mistake

I don’t quite think _anything_ can happen at _anytime_ - it’s not like lasers from space (which have never existed before) can suddenly come and vaporize the opponent’s King ..

Hikaru kept looking up to see if he’d reached the 40th move so he can offer a draw. He was getting bored but little did he know that his thriller moment was just around the corner. 🤣

better title, most shocking encounter between hikaru and alireza, unbelievable ending to hikaru vs alireza, clash of the titans ends brutally, literally anything is better than giving away the crux of the game

That speaks a lot about why pencils have erasers at one end. Coz everyone makes mistakes. Including elite players and players whom we place on pedestals. REM was right. Everyone hur...blunders.

This further solidifies Magnus argument.this is why even in a drawn position you should either drag the game until you get flagged or wait for someone to blunder . Cause evidently even gms can blunder xD

Personally, I think that the way things are worded, one doesn’t get the full picture here. It’s easy to call Firouzja’s move a blunder if the starting point is the position where he responds to ..Ra5+. Go back a few moves and observe what he was trying to do. He was probably aware of the potential for the sacrifice and calculated that it wouldn’t work with his king on the e file as his king can get back to stop Black’s king. Under the time pressure, he just probably forgot to make the adjustment when he played Kd5; his king now being one move further away. Hikaru hesitated before playing ..Ra5+. I wondered if he was considering ..Ra3+, thought that White’s king would come back to e4 and be in a favourable position again, saw the possibility with ..Ra5+ and tried it, with ..Ra3 next move intended?
