To be fair, in coastal Slovenia, especially in Piran, I've seen a lot of local people speaking italian (or better, venetian language) rather than slovene. While it's likely that this trend disappears going further and further south, since Piran is almost on the border with Croatia maybe those people assume in some croatian coastal town they still do, like in Slovenia... In Slovenia I know for sure italian is a tutelated language, but if I rememeber correctly it's the same in Croatia (or at least in istria). Since italian (especially venetian) presence was prevalent on certain towns and cities of nowadays' coastal Croatia for centuries, some italians just assume (maybe wrongly) they can be at leas understood there. Sometimes some of them forget how big was the proportion of the istrian-dalmatian exodus and that very few people there are left who can speak italian nowadays.

The thing that Drew said about the Dutch having a lot of very popular DJs is true. I do know that Martin Garrix (the maker of the song "Animals"(the one with the people wearing animal masks)) is from Amstelveen (a town near Amsterdam). That song was on the number 1 spot of several hit lists around 2016 and 2017.

9:37 this isn't about the language itself being weird. It's about France having an institution (Académie Française) entirely dedicated to "protect the French language" which is basically "remove english words already integrated in people's everyday life, and try to replace those words with new french ones" in today's era. But this institution fails at its job 99% of the time so it's really just a bunch of useless overpaid intellectuals even we french people make fun of. Also I think it may have existed since Louis 14th, so centuries old

1:15 as much as people like dunking on french for this reason, there are other languages that structure their numbers similarly. Russian, Ukrainian and other languages of that family have number words that are spelled like 8x10. The Russian word for 80 is vosem’destyat, which is a combination of the vosem (8) and desyat’ (10). Other numbers also use cores or roots of words, by that I mean central part of the word that rarely changes, which can be weirdly short, in some instances being just 2 letters long.
@gamerpinecone
@gamerpinecone Жыл бұрын
the difference is that 8x10 makes sense, because it's based on the decimal system. 4x20 (quatre-vingts) in french just seems really weird for no apparent reason.
@vladprus4019
@vladprus4019 Жыл бұрын
What is weird with the french here is that they DON'T have x20 system in any other case than 80 and 90 30 has it's own word, it's not 20+10 40 has it's own words, it's not 2x10 50 has it's own word 60 is not 3x20 either 70 ALSO has it's own words Than 80 hits and this new thing with multiplying 20s appears out of nowerhe that lasts untill 99 I have no clue what happended there in terms of etymology. And fun fact: Wallonian (VERY close relative), has 80 and 90 consistent with the rest of the numbers. I bet there is a reason, but it's kinda hard to imagine it.

@@vladprus4019 70 isn't it's own words ,it Soixante-Dix (60+10) . And the reason we use these is pretty simple : Uglyness Septante (70) ,Octante (80) and Nonante (90) are too ugly so the Académie Française (French Academia) which was made in 1635 with the goal of Standardizing and rendering the French language beautiful ,they knew these were really ugly word to say so they chose to create new words for these . That's why in the Belgian ,Swiss and Quebecois version of French ,they still use the old way .
