The Vanishing (AKA Spoorloos) is a 1988 Dutch Thriller film by George Sluizer and I personally believe that the antagonist (Raymond Lermone) is the most terrifying villain in any film that I’ve seen and this video explains why

“He isn’t scary at all” Cool, I’m glad you have a different opinion. But can you please keep it to yourself. You are not adding anything by commenting this and it feels kinda rude when you butt in like that. In fact, why did you even watch this video in the first place if you feel this way?

“He isn’t scary at all” Yes! That’s the point you made in the video. He could be anyone. He’s so normal-looking. And ironically that makes him terrifying.

It's incredible how far evil can go! Continuing with Bundy's parallels, Bundy himself rescued a child from drowning just like in the movie and was decorated as an illustrious citizen. nice video ! Saludos desde argentina

This film really does a fantastic job of driving home the point of you never know who is capable of what. Or what is going through someone’s mind. Evil can come from anywhere and look like anyone else. This film was fantastic, it really got in my head.

Fantastic movie, thanks for the review. I've now seen it a few times and keep finding small details that amaze me. At the end, Raymond's wife is watering 2 sapling trees as he is watching her ( also the trailer cart he used is seen in the background ) Possibly Raymond has planted them right on top of the graves. Earlier in the movie Rex & Saskia buried 2 gold coins underneath 2 trees, which he is seen around later before drinking the coffee at the gas station...coincidence? Also John Hammond at 1:36

As an American I am continually finding out that many films I viewed made by an American film company often are revealed to be a remake from a far more superior European - foreign original and am often disappointed that I experienced the film by watching a poorly recreated attempt first without knowing the original already exists, very disappointing

I think the main point of this movie is to show that anyone, according to circumstances, can become either a "hero" or a "monster". That's in us and most of the time, we don't really decide which side will pop-up. I saw that movie as a warning : you think you know who you are, you think you know the stuf you're made off, but you're delusional : you are less in charge that you believe. This is why you can have large-scale horrific events, genocides and so on : the right context - war time, typically - is able to transform an entire population of so-called "normal people" in horrendous criminals. The most terrifying villain is the one sleeping in us, waiting the good moment to awake.

I've recently rediscovered Charles Laughton, one of the greatest actors to grace the scene, and found his Dr. Moreau in The Island of Lost Souls absolutely terrifying.

Being buried alive is so terrifying. I haven't seen this film. I watched a film a while ago "Megan is Missing " the plot was pretty straightforward with no twists or turns but the ending was horrifying and I still have bad dreams about it 😕

I enjoyed the movie. I definitely see the appeal. The only disappointment for me was with a movie full of set-up lines = pay off actions (ex. “Killing is not the worst thing/I have claustrophobia” = Rex buried alive). There were lots of “are you having an affair?” questions from Raymond’s family…only to be no pay off (ex. His wife finding something of Saskia’s or Rex’s to confirm her suspicions).

Now I didn’t watch all of this video, as the video said to click away towards the end for spoilers, so I’ll just comment on what I saw. A great film analysis, a lot more in depth, well researched and interesting to think on. I absolutely will watch The Vanishing at some point

Your channel is pretty crazy! I see Doctor Who stuff, wonderful, Nintendo of course, excellent, the first video is a ranking of portrait ghosts from Luigi's Mansion, a TRG compilation and then a video on Spoorloos of all things, one of my favourite films! Really good stuff!

Yeah, my channel is pretty crazy Although I will admit that I am in the middle of a rebrand. The film stuff will continue but the Nintendo stuff isn’t really for me and I’m planning on moving the Doctor Who content to another channel Either way, I’m glad to find another person who’s at least heard of this film

Can someone tell me who was the woman he talks to that tells him gas station is the best place to kidnap someone since its crowded with tourists/people I was watching late at night and wasn't focusing, was she working with him or was he imagining her?

I can watch the remake up until the last part and the very ending which is very similar to Misery. Hollywood was producing a lot of these at the time and despite the story the ending made it into just another generic 90s thriller.

Another thing is - we don't know if what happend to Rex Hofman also happend to Saskia.. He might as well been lying. He could've raped or tortured her, and then buried her alive, or who knows..

Watched this movie after seeing comment after comment of how disturbing it was and the film fell incredibly short of my expectations. This “terrifying” villain only succeeded in committing two terrible acts the entire movie. 😂 I understand that what makes him scary is that he’s a sociopath under the guise of an ordinary guy but come on lol. There are dozens upon dozens of scarier villains in films. Another movie people put in the category with this one is Cure hopefully that one lives up to the hype.

You see the American remake does suck but J expect we have different reasons for believing this. As an American, were I to have a loved one go missing and I were confronted with a man (women or child for that matter) who claimed responsibility, I could learn everything I wanted to know without having to drink a goddamn thing they gave me. I'm capable of much worse than leaving someone in a box in the ground, in fact I'm certain I could make them beg for such kindness before I was through and would know everything in their head, literally. People that say torture doesn't work have had different life experiences than I. Sometimes the only way to deal with truly "bad" guys is to be worse. As long as you are sure in your convictions it shouldn't trouble you much.
