He was still killing people, and was basically just a serial killer hiding out in the jungle murdering random people in the Philippines for decades. Eventually he was returned home and is kinda lionized by certain parts of Japanese media to this day.

The only healing I got from the wounds left by the Steven Moffat Sherlock show was watching older Sherlock shows, to where the version of JohnLock that I genuinely like now is from the 1984 Sherlock show, where really I only see Sherlock and John Watson in a QPR. It's because of how rampant the show makes clear (by being an as accurate adaptation of the books) of Sherlock being aroace and John being straight, but them finding comfortability and satisfaction in living together (Hell, the show even writes out John's marriage despite keeping everything else from the books in).

OMG Flashback time. I was a part of the Sherlock fandom. Not really the others, though (and I also didn't have a Tumblr account, so I was definitely not deep in the trenches here). Did watch a couple episodes of Doctor Who and Supernatural and liked them well enough, but I never fully got into them. Sherlock gave me quite enough happy brain rot. :D And yes, please do a part 2!!! I was finishing college/prepping for grad school between seasons 3 and 4, and in my first year of grad school when season 4 aired. This also seems to have been when the fandom was falling apart (or at least going dormant), so all the Johnlock conspiracy and fandom implosion was news to me. I had other stuff I was paying more attention to at that point, but fandom history fascinates me, so I'm hungry for more learning!

i admire carely's explanation of tjlc but i feel like you can't talk about the apple tree yard conspiracy without going into detail of what happened with the last episode of season 4 because yes we were crazy but my god it cannot be overstated just how bad that season and particularly the episode of sherlock was. the major reveals were that sherlock had a secret sister who was so insane her parents shipped her off to an island in isolation and only mycroft remembers here. it's also revealed that the dog sherlock kept thinking about wasn't actually a dog. no no that was his BEST FRIEND who he used to play pirates with and who fell down a well and died. so he forgot about said best friend and imagined a dog anyway. the reason this is absolutely absurd is because the entire show hypes up how much of a genius sherlock is. he's soo smart he's actually infuriating. but he somehow forgot both a sister and best friend. but that's not the only thing that got us to the secret 4th episode theory. season 3 had a special 4th episode so it wasn't unheard of. (or season 4 had an episode 0. however you look at it.) BUT ALSO it leaked like a few days before it was supposed to air. so the fandom watched it and was like this is actually the worst television i've ever seen in my entire life, it has to be a fake leak right? so we waited for the episode to air and it was the actual episode. and again this has to be some type of trick. well the episode was airing in theaters and they wouldn't put literally the worst episode of probably any television show to ever exist in a bunch of theaters right? they aired the fake one as a scapegoat and we're all supposed to watch the real episode in theaters. i went to the theaters. it was the actual episode. so desperate to salvage what's left of this show, we managed to connect some dots with mary's character and the plot of apple tree yard and we were so hopeful that maybe just maybe that was our saving grace but alas.
