Great video. When I bought my Canon R6 18 months ago, I bought the RF 24-240mm and the RF 35mm. I also have an old EF100-400mm lens for wildlife. I have the RF24-240mm as my walk-around lens. I almost never take it off and it has never failed me. I am not a professional, but I am very happy with this lens. As you mentioned, I do have a "raincoat" for the lens when I am out in the rain.

Hey there, than you for watching, and commenting! I think many people don't give a chance to these type of lens being scared by the aperture but they are mostly underrated. I plan to replace my 600mm f11 for the 100-400 I do see it as a better versatile option, although 600 did come in handy few times.

This was the first RF lens I bought when I got the RP, and although I don't reach for it as often as I used to, it really does always impress me with what it's capable of. Definitely an underrated lens with a ton of versatility, especially now that I have an R6 II

VERY much appreciate this review. I love my EF L lens with my Canon R6MII and adapter, however my husband and I are going on a trip to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary and as much as I love my L lens they are heavy and to travel with would be alot... I found this lens and from what Ive been seeing, this review included, its a GREAT versatile lens to have in my kit! I also have the RF35mm f1.8 to use indoors so going to pull the trigger to get this lens!!

@@pamela-yourlifeasart i have 28-70 2.8, 24-70 2.8 and 24-105 4L and still often I chose this one cause of the versatility and size. I just love the reach and versatility combined with a small footprint. In combination with 35mm I think it is a great travel combo especially if you enjoy shooting a bit tighter and compressed with a longer lenses. Thank for the comment and for watching 🙏

THIS IS EXACTLY TRUE. Using a Canon R5, and having the luxury of using Affinity Photo, the lens is fabulous. Printing to 13 x 19 inches, with a little post with Affinity Photo, and no one will see a difference between it and the lenses that cost much much more. Pixel Pokers can always find a problem. In the case of this lens, Canon just lucked out with a combination of the RF mount, the combination of glass such that it blows away any other version of their own lenses or anyone else's. I doubt that they could make an "L" version that would be much better optically, unless they used glass that is horribly expensive for all the elements. Lens snobs(of which there are so many among reviewers) are very very very uncomfortable.

Hi Tomislav, I have a R6 with the 24-106 f4. I'm in doubt if I should should sell the 24-105 and get the 24-240 because of it's reach. But I'm afraid I would loose a lot in terms of sharpness. It's difficult to judge the sharpness on the internet. I wouldn't mind the loss of light. What would your of others thought be in this matter? Thanks in advance.
@TomislavMoze
@TomislavMoze 11 ай бұрын
Hey, sorry for slow response. Well I would rather have 24-105 4L than this lens if I had to chose, for two reasons, it is optically superior (both colours, flares and sharpness) second is just the build quality. The only case where I would chose 24-240 over it would be if I had r6 or r6mk2 so no much room for cropping, If I mostly shoot in dry conditions (although this is manageable with rain cover) and if I really need the max reach (birds, planes, etc.)

Hi Tomislav, no problem and thanks for your reply. Well I do have the R6 and don't actually use it in rainy conditions. I think I'll try one out if possible because sharpness is important for me as well. (bit of a pixelpeeper) But the reach of the 240 is very tempting. during hikes

Hi! Thanks for your review. I have a question, from the point of view of an amateur "photographer" with a low budget... is it a reasonable lens to use for sports photography - particularly to take pictures of my daughters who practise figure skating usually in indoor sports ground.. with artificial light. The lens is for use on an R8 . Thanks!
@TomislavMoze

Hey thank you for watching. It is really hard to give this kind of advice since everyone has a different tolerance for high iso. In the scenario you are mentioning I presume if you wanna freeze motion the shutter should be at least 1/1000 or faster and for that this lens could be a problem. I also presume that you rarely need wider angle than 50mm, Considering the size of the court. I would rather go with an old 70-200 2.8 which you can find for less money the image quality will be better you will love the 2.8 image for sure and the af will work the same. At least from my experience. If you need a wide lens I would combine the old 70-200 with the kit lens. I know people avoid used and old lenses but I think there are great lenses for a good price out there. I used mine 70-200 2.8 till last year and it worked well and changed it just cause I got a great deal on the new RF version. What other lenses do you own?

@@TomislavMoze Thank you very much for your reply! You were very kind to answer my question quickly! I have the Canon R8 + RF50mm 1.8 and I love this combination, but to photograph my daughters' figure skating I need a longer focal range! Apart from "sports"/family life photography, I mainly shoot landscapes and architecture. I've thought about buying an RF70-200 f4... but the prices!!! I saw a sale with an EF135mm f/2 L USM (used for around 600€)... what's your opinion for this type of use... since I'd also have to buy the adapter? Thanks!!!

@@arqtpiedade well since I usewd profesionally the 15 years old EF 70-200 till recently on my R5 and R6mk2 I don't see why 135 would not work. EF lenses are still a great option and the adapter are now easy to find and are affordable I would just advise to go with a canon original one.

Thank you. Your summation in the end is very informative. See the thing is that today phone cameras have 10x digital zoom and are able to offer many good images through AI processing. So why would anyone want to buy this lens to produce average images that could possibly be worse than those shot by say a top end Samsung / Pixel / iPhone? In this day and age the only differentiator that justifies a dedicated camera set up is the unarguably superior optical image quality offered by a large sensor in the camera paired with a well-made lens with at least an f4 constant aperture. Every other image can be produced and even bettered by phone cameras. Am I right? Or am I talking through the wrong end?
@TomislavMoze
@TomislavMoze Жыл бұрын
I do still think it mostly depends what you plan to do with those images. Phones still can’t compete in a 99% of situations with even entry level cameras especially when we talk about long lenses regarding IQ. Now this could change soon with AI but currently it is still a big difference regarding quality.
@passionandcommonsense
@passionandcommonsense Жыл бұрын
@@TomislavMoze I agree. But I am talking about this particular lens which I think is producing images that are strictly just acceptable or average. That even a phone can do today. If we want nice bokeh and all that which is what we come to dedicated cameras for, then we definitely need bigger apertures (and longer focal lengths).
@TomislavMoze
@TomislavMoze Жыл бұрын
@@passionandcommonsense I was referring to this lens. No phone can match it optically even if we talk about the bokeh. This is still a full frame lens. Although it does work amazing for example on my c70 for video.
@passionandcommonsense
@passionandcommonsense Жыл бұрын
@@TomislavMoze I too was talking about this lens only. The images from it in your video and in other videos of it, are just average. Nothing I would reach for a dedicated camera for. What we want is creamy bokeh and separation of subjects; typically those aspects are the differentiators for dedicated camera set ups; and for those you typically need a big aperture. Even with longer focal lengths like 250 mm, you cannot find work arounds for a small aperture all the time in the scene around you. Hence the question. Just FYI, I know it is not about this lens; but quite a few professional photographers have simply given up on cameras and lenses for ultra wide angle shots. They just use their phones now. That’s how far phone cameras have come. So the only situation where one can justify a dedicated camera is for top notch image quality with superb subject isolation.
@TomislavMoze
@TomislavMoze Жыл бұрын
Well I guess that mostly depends on the client needs and wants, I did some iPhone shots back in 2015 for a client but just because they wanted that look. But that mostly depends on the concept, type of use and quality needed. I do think there is still no phone that can beat a modern FF dslr with this type of lens regarding versatility, speed of use, image quality and control capabilities. But in certain situations and scenarios you can for sure manage with an new flagship smartphone even in professional scenarios.

It is not underrated. Without sophisticated SW, lens is unusable. By making this lens Canon is trying to break standards which past lenses were based on. Simply advertising coal equal to diamond. As a professional that has been using almost every canon lens that is currently available in the market I disagree. It is not perfect but it offers a lot for a great price. And there are many users that would agree with me. The lack of quality is compensated with versatility. I do wish that they offer a more expensive version of it but it would be also heavier, larger and less versatile.

@@letni9506zBecause vignetting is so bad it shows completely black corners not even truly providing a full frame 35 mm format coverage. Sonit is so dependent in either in camera correction for jpegs or post-processing for raw images. But you then need to correct ALL your wide images. And then. This inage correction sw then must cover for optical information thats simply not there. When shooting a wide picturebif a field of flowers it must - sort "make up" flowers in the corner? Is that what photography is moving into? Brands like Sigma and Tamron and Nikon etc on the non-canon platform actually prove it can be done better. Canon needs to up it s game seriously to keep DSLR ES (F) Shooters on the R platform. I bought the R8, but keep shooting my pro glass from the DSLR line through the adapter. The R zoom lenses are not up to par.
@MrRFasters
@MrRFasters 10 күн бұрын
I simply do NOT understand. For ages ALL reviews are about optical quality and then we test the ultimo's of the lens, always looking immediately into sharpness, vignetting, aberrations and barrel distortion. And when a lens scored bad in these areas - woooo the lens manufacturor. And now, with Canon trying to get all their DLSR EF(S) body and lens owners onto the R patform - now this isn't an issue any more - for software can easily correct this? WHAT a NONSENSE. A) You're dependent on the in-camera JPG generation and - let's face it - that's not ideal. B) you HAVE TO post-process EVERY raw image. Well: that works quite well when shooting 1.000 images on your wild life trip, holiday, football match or wedding shoot. Any idea how time that's going to cost you? Or how advanced your automatic correcting port-procesisng workflow must be? WTF. Generating a strong, decent, directly OK raw file REMAINS to be very very relevant and this lens SUCKs at this. I'm ranting for I beleieve these type of Hooray! video reviews are either bad reviews or we're looking at marketing sponsored rubbish. And I'm ranting for Canon will simply not UP their game when we - as photograpghers - buy into this BS of accepting very poor optical performance of their newest lenses. I'm sticking to my R system adaptor and the ES, ES-F, L series, Sigma Sports and Tamron high quality lenses and DO NOT buy into this poor quality trap.

Everything is about the balance of multiple things price/size/versatility and image quality and it totally depends from user to user how far will one thing influence the other and how much will that influence the intended use. Now we can argue about perceptions of what is good enough, I can say from my use case nobody cared what lens I used for any of my photos as long they were good. You have to be really naive to expect this range with this price to and size to perform incredible regarding IQ. The point of it is to perform good enough and as many have stated it does and maybe even slightly better than good enough and offer other things in my case the versatility. I bought this lens with my own money showed all the flaws and accepted them as something worth the versatility this lens brought to my workflow. Btw when I do a Red Bull event or any high level event I usually shoot around 4-6k images and rarely anybody delivers that 1000 you mentioned, rarely over 100...maybe for weddings but this is definitely not a wedding photography lens. Plus when you edit raws Lens Correction is usually automatically turned on and it doesn't influence the editing process in any way possible and the loss of resolution coming from that correction is minimal and to most not important. When a clients as Red Bull, Reuters doesn't care and both have one of the biggest photo agencies in the world with strong guide lines and requirements just that shows that you argument doesn't hold water and is unreasonable.
