As someone that LOVES the originals and Cronenberg's remake of The Fly, this is just such a great tribute to both. You get the cheesier, dialogue-heavy, science-fiction takes from the original trilogy along with some basic monster effects; while also having references to the more disgusting body horror from the '87 remake in John's transition and transformation between him climbing on the ceiling looking decrepit like Goldblum did and obviously the easy removal of his fingernails.

Fun fact: My mom had some of the Strange Matter books on audio cassette from the 90s. I listened to the cassette tape of Creature Feature on the portable cassette player she still had while I was going through the height of my goosebumps phase, probably around 2010. And it scared me so bad, lol. Years later I was watching Haunting Hour episodes I hadn't seen air as a kid (back when they were on Netflix) and I watched this episode and thought "wow, this is really similar to that tape I listened to." Found out a few years ago it was directly based on the book when I was going on a Wikipedia deep dive.

I haven’t seen these episodes in years and I could remember them quite well to my surprise. Even though I wasn’t into horror movies yet at that time looking back these episodes are just a love letter to 50s b-horror movies, always amazing to see something be given the respect it deserves. Also I swear anytime there was a commercial about The Haunting Hour back then they’d have the clip of the girl screaming into the camera somewhere in it

I think Dr. Mangle is a reference to Josef Mengele, the German doctor who did human experiments in World War 2. Mangle is also an evil scientist with a Germanesque accent who performs human experiments. Plus, Mengele, Mangle. If he is, what a dark reference for a kids show. I love The Haunting Hour.
