Thnaks for sharing the history and the rewards of the hunt.This would have been an incredibly successful line if LV had marketed it as being Australian leather at the time (though perhaps not in Japan!). The design of that last bag is genius. Shades of the Longchamp Le Piage bags but about 100 x more detailed. amazing.

Thanks Jenni. I remember living just outside of Canberra a few years ago and rounded a corner very early one morning and came face to face with a massive grey. Must have been 7 foot tall, just standing on the side of the road as if it was waiting for a bus. I’ve never been so scared. Had that Kangaroo decided I was a threat it would have killed me. People think they’re cute and harmless, they don’t understand the danger and the damage they do. Of course I’m not suggesting getting rid of all of them, but there’s a reason the government supports culling. Thanks for your support xx

@@livingluxwithmeredith OMG Meredith that was a very scary situation you found yourself in and I am so glad you came away unscathed. They are so very strong and like you say people think they are so cute and harmless especially overseas visitors. I remember 40+ years ago when we went to live in Darwin we drove to Port Augusta then put our car on the Ghan which only went to Alice Springs back then, and then drove to Darwin. The Ghan was full of overseas visitors and they were in awe of the kangaroos thinking they were so cute jumping around the place looking harmless. I could here some saying they would love to be able to pet them. If they only knew what they were really like. I totally agree about not getting rid of all of them but the government is so right in supporting culling. Always here to support you lovely Meredith. Enjoy your weekend. XX

They are a symbol of our country but an animal that breeds well and causers damage. They’re also dangerous, you don’t ever want to get too close! As long as the meat and skin can be used then there’s no reason not to use them for leather.

Truly fascinating. I live in a community where deer are like vermin. They are everywhere. It is not uncommon to look out and see 8 deer standing around in my driveway. We have to be careful to not hit one while driving in the area. We also have bears which,while not as prolific, still are commonly seen. So I get the need to cull. And while culling is necessary it just makes sense to use them for hides, meat, etc. I think the bags you have are wonderful and I see the beauty in the leather. I look forward to you continuing to source more bags and share them with us.

My understanding is it’s only certain states in the US? I find it so strange that countries will ban something we farm. Nike and Puma have found a product they think will mirror the current kangaroo they have. It’s cheaper, quicker and faster so not surprising they’re moving away from real leather.

I have no specific issues concerning kangaroo leather. My POV: when people use the meat of an animal (what we do with our European cow/calf/sheep/goat/...), and/or (potentially) other parts of its body, and the leather, then I don't have any ethical reservation. I strongly believe that it's fundamentally wrong to make a ranking of all animals, to decide which animals are worth it to live or to die just because of their specie, anyway. In France, people struggle with horse meat but not with calf !?!? My German husband refuses to eat a rabbit stew but has no problem with a chicken fricassee!?!?! Thank you for showing us this LV pieces! You have an interesting collection. And I understood that this is a "work in process". 😁

@@livingluxwithmeredith it seems different to me because we don’t breed kangaroos for food so killing them just for their skin seems terrible. Believe me, if I could stop the world from eating cows and goats or any other animal I would in a second but it’s not realistic so I just buy preloved if I want leather, which unfortunately, I love. Im also guilty of owning a few alligator and other exotics but, I also got them preloved. Hypocrite or not, it’s how I justify my purchases of animal products. Not judging others. I had no idea that LV created bags from kangaroos! Amazing facts about the leather. As I was watching your video, I saw a ticker tape scroll across the tv screen saying that Nike will stop using kangaroo skins for its shoes in 2023. After googling this, I see it is to appease animal rights activists. I just read that California has not allowed products made from kangaroos to be sold or imported into the state since 1971. Hmmm... I wonder if LV sold any of your kangaroo style bags in CA in 2008'ish? Great video Meredith!
@livingluxwithmeredith
@livingluxwithmeredith Жыл бұрын
That is interesting about California, I wonder why. Nike has found a synthetic option they think will mirror kangaroo. I imagine it’s cheaper, easier and quicker to make, and has the added bonus of keeping animal activists happy. For me though, synthetic never quite meets the real thing….in anything!

@@livingluxwithmeredith California puts restrictions on many, many things ~ so much so that many US product labels come with warnings about CA restricting that item within the state or warning people that the item may be a cancer-causing item. I agree with you ~ synthetic just doesn't cut it for me. I prefer the real thing as well!

Thank you for the info! I think many of us who don’t live in Australia see a kangaroo and immediately think how cute they are rather than what you just said in the video but I think it’s because we aren’t there so we don’t have to deal with them.

Kangaroos are actually incredibly vicious and dangerous. Should you see them you don’t want to get too close!

Absolutely. Australian have a very different view, especially those who have lived rural.

There would be lots of options from Australia, but just check your import restrictions to see if they can imported in.

I think Americans think kangaroos are to Australians what bald eagles are to us Americans which isn't the case. I would love to own something made of kangaroo.

I never knew kangaroo hide was used for bags. I live an hour and a half north of NYC. Deer are quite annoying and they always have that stupid look on their face 🙄

Same as Coyotes in Canada & North America. Yet still look how well that’s working out for Canada Goose who simply trim their hoods in Coyote fur. Every store picketed by animal activists until they gave in.

It’s ridiculous. If they need to be culled anyway, isn’t it better to use the skin?

I love animals as much as anyone. But, they are used for food and clothing and as long as nothing is made to suffer I'm fine with that.

Well no. Kangaroos are a beautiful national animal. I and many people do not treat them like deer or cull them!!! 😮
@livingluxwithmeredith
@livingluxwithmeredith Жыл бұрын
The culling is a government endorsed program. We do it every year in several parts of the country. If you’re Australian I’m guessing you’ve never lived rurally? I’m guessing you’ve also never come face to face with one outside a zoo?
