I'm trying to compare what he's saying about the industry, fans etc. with Joe Jackson's career & things *he's said* about the same issues & without knowing the details of either, it's impossible. Joe was for some reason incredibly lucky & no record execs ever gave him any ultimatums. But that doesn't explain things like the popularity of Jumpin' Jive, the album _or_ the tour. It was something no one asked for or wanted, & it's not like he was a sex symbol or good singer. & he'd often yell at his own fans. That could be a part of Wilson's experience though. He could only know how he's irritated his fans by making himself accessible _to_ them. That itself can be a mistake. People idolize & *want* to idolize musicians. Treating them with respect can upset their semi-conscious wishes to elevate you. But I'm pissing in the wind here.

As much as I love blackwater park I don’t think it’s worth the hype it gets. Personally I think the album before that “Still life” is a much better album, Better riffs & melodies, Very diverse and technical with a very somber and melancholic atmosphere which completely encapsulates with the concept of that album which in itself is beautiful. The reason BWP gets all the credit is because it was there breakthrough album, It was on a major label with worldwide distribution and that sent them off to worldwide domination you could say. Wilson’s hand in that album certainly helped and the production is top notch, creative and certainly not your run of the mill metal productions that was happening at the time. Mikeal himself has stated many times what I just said about BWP and even he doesn’t see much of a difference between that album and the one before. Don’t get me wrong I love BWP and everything Mikeal has ever written I just prefer “Still life”

I really enjoyed this conversation, and can totally relate to this guy. A musician I've never heard of btw, and now I'm looking forward to checking out both Opeth and Porcupine Tree, thanks to everyone who commented. I went to a Music Industry Arts college in the 90's and it was made clear to me with this statement: "You can do whatever it takes to make it, or be broke and be an artist." I went, "oh, I thought we were here how to learn how to support us as artists" but it was definitely the former, and it made my decision easy. I make music because I have been obsessed with it since I was young, not to be famous or make money or get attention. The idea of pandering in music makes me slightly nauseous and I feel good when I go to sleep at night that I have built my own world around my musical expression. I don't even like to play the same songs at shows! lol. And like Steven, I feel like "I've already done that, why would I repeat myself?" I like the idea of having the freedom to do whatever I want and I claim that freedom and never take it for granted. Thanks for this video and passionate comments, nice to know I still have a musical family out there that resonates with this mindset.

I'd love to interview Steven Wilson one day to give another perspective on the music industry. I'm currently 17 years old and starting out as a musician, it's hard. But to be fair it's always been hard and it's always been about commerical succes or else you'll fade into the darkness. There are so so so many bands from the 60's and 70's with decent or even amazing music that just didn't make it. Cause even back then commercial success would mean the band could survive. There were still bands around that time that were too experimental and weren't pick up. And today with spotify, the algorithm can learn the genres you like and you can find artists through discover weekly. And of course you can search for them yourself, just type in a genre and maybe a year, and bam there's so many playlists with amazing artists. It's how I found Porcupine Tree, The Pinneapple Thief, Marillion, Transatlantic, Liquid Tension Experiment, Long Distance Calling, Al Stewart, Styx, Starcastle, Anathema, Naxatras, Liquify, Jean-Luc Ponty, Gilgamesh, The Aristocrats, Brand X, Weather Report, Mahavisnu Orchestra, T-SQUARE, Casiopea, and many many more, both obscure and well known artists. So I'd love to sit down with him and just talk about music, bands and albums with him and learn from his experiences.

Talks like this give a lovely perspective on things. Great point about investing yourself into great music or any new music. Many are growers....or better still you grow with the music even if you did start off going 'wtf!' The many wtfs in my experience too, tend to be those moments you later realise required you to grow a bit. Great interview Rob.

I completely agree with SW's contention that a listener's 'entry point' to a band's recorded catalogue is a sweet spot that the artist can never really surpass (for that listener). That sweet spot will be a different album for many different people. I have found that the initial exposure to that band's 'sound' makes an emotional impact, particularly if I really like it, and wires my brain a particular way which affects my experience with their other albums.

This is a really interesting conversation and I appreciate that in here Steven is willing to be wrong or to have his perspective changed with good arguments. Regarding the Metallica example I believe the opposite, Metallica has been notoriously chasing popular trends since the black album. They tried "pop metal", they tried to "grunge-efy" their sound when grunge was popular and then they tried nu- metal with no solos when Nu-Metal was at peak popularity. Lulu I think its the outlier and it is a James's passion project, which is great, but the rest of them is just Lars chasing popular trends and relevancy. Marketing wise it 100% worked for them, but the fans were not blinded by the obvious chase for trends. Some people liked them, some not. I wouldn't personally praise it, but i enjoy some of the songs they did during this phase. I would rather choose a band that did a 3rd great album that maybe didnt sound different because the choose to remain themselves and not go trend-chasing

You pushed him on all the things I'd like to push him on if I met him 😂 Being a Steven Wilson fan is like being part of a special club that nobody else knows exists, you'll know exactly what I mean 😀

Music should be made to what the feeling when you make it is. No matter wht genre it falls Into. It should also be about what you have been through or think about certain things. One word INTEGRITY

Anyone who is new to PT should take a chance to listen to their live releases. Doesn't even need to be THE best live "official" albums or DVD what-not. Just listen to say "Live in Warszawa" for instance. Nice spread out of their early - mid discography so it's a nice window into that era of PT and not too overwhelming for the new listener. If you like - expand to their later work. Usually that's the case isn't it?

These topics have been a prevalent focus of my internal conversations for years, and even moreso recently... such an insightful interview! The balancing act of artistic success, and the influences of that success on an artist has always been fascinating to me. Rob asks some truly compelling questions, and Steven is so very 'aware', articulate, and personable with his responses. Loved this!

Music in its pure form should be an expression of the person making it, rather than sitting in a pocket if you like making the same thing over and over, STEVEN WILSON is a bloody GENIUS fullstop,...

I think the path towards sustainability as a musician going forward (and I am speaking only as an observer) is two-fold. First, the Patreon/Bandcamp model Steven mentioned - have a small core of dedicated fans who you engage with on a regular basis and who buy everything you do (or subscribe so that they get it all automatically). Secondly, touring. Touring touring touring. I don't think an AI will ever be able to replicate the feeling of being in a club with a blues player, or in a park listening to folk music, or a dive bar with a punk band. It comes down to what can't be replicated.

What a great interview! I do want to add, to the conversation about Spotify, algorithms and playlists, that the "Steven Wilson algorithm" that control my Spotify "radio" has made me discover SO many bands, and new bands to the genre, that I would've never found say 20 years ago! To me, Spotify is a music discovery blessing

Of course they were great, however you can't expect all fans to have such a broad musical taste. I've heard about SW during The Incident and before I already had a very diverse taste, including many bands like Doors, Pink Floyd, AC/DC, Alice In Chains, The human League, early Duran Duran, Depeche Mode, Japan, David Sylvian, Peter Gabriel, David Bowie... So basically, I dig anything he's putting out there
@hhaannnnaahh222 Жыл бұрын
@@penusliski i don't get the impression he cares about catering to his audience though, i mean he's said over and over that he tries to please himself first and foremost. I doubt he axed the b-sides out of fear people wouldn't "get it", he probably just wanted it to be a succinct length.

Another great interview Rob. Nice to have a long-form interview where the subject can breathe and tell a deeper, multi-faceted story, rather than a shallow, bite-sized format.

Speaking of that song, that never gets played anymore live, Rob Moore, could you please find out where he found those lyrics in a very subtle message to his fans? i.e. was there a song, albeit a very puerile song perhaps, that he was thinking of when he wrote some of the lyrics to that song mentioned he felt grubby about?

My intro to the world of SW was To The Bone. I was stunned, why I not listened to his stuff before! My wife had the Blackfield CD single, but I didn't realise it was SW. Over last few years I've gone and discovered his back catalogue... I knew of PT but never listened to anything by them. The fact he doesn't compromise is what him a true artist.

a really excellent and thought-provoking interview. I could never stop thinking about Devin Townsend, who also fitted most of Steven's decriptions of artistic integrety and following ones own passions. They are very much alike in this respect and not coincidentially are among the few artists I by records of without second-guessing.

27:40 talking about bands that created their own musical universe: I've always felt this way to Porcupine Tree. When somebody would ask me about what kind of music I like listening to, I was like "I really like Porcupine Tree" (what is a complete understatement, just not to seem too fanatic and nerdy) and they were like "Haha, funny name :D What kind of music do they make?" And I'd be like "Yeeeaahh, well .... they sound like Porcupine Tree." "Hu? I don't get it. Anyways ..." and they'd never experience the joy of discovering that niche but sooo unique music. Even though the Closure/Continuation album has many new twists and sounds in it, I'd aaaalllwaaayys recognize my favourite band behind these songs. You just can't miss their spirit. And yeah, I think that's way cooler than any genre could be. It's like inventing a new colour that nobody knew of before and watching it just shakes your heart ❤ Omg I love them soo much I could keep nerding about them for hours :D 🥲

Steven Wilson is awesome. Not only is he a world class musician, but he also invites other world class musicians to record with him. He is similar to Frank Zappa in that regard - Pretty much everyone in their bands is a multi-instrumentalist. An insane amount of talent in every album.

I understand Steven denying the genius label and commend it. Some musicians have extreme gifts and talent in certain areas, but ultimately it’s the heart or spirit as he mentions that brings out these timeless moments in music. I feel the idolatry of impressive musicians and or music in general is a slippery slope. It’s all about the sincerity of expression. Wonderful discussion, just subbed!

There is so much awesome passing of knowledge in this interview that I feel that the title doesnt do it justice. And while perhaps interesting to hear about Robs personal thoughts on his career as a writer, somehow it put Steven in the role as the interviewer, which is a shame given what could have been said amongst many other topics. You would never see Howard Stern or other great interviewers take that much time on themselves imho. For that reason only this is a 9/10 interview.
