It's because the enemy team is too behind and he's too ahead. Lifesteal and omnivamp is always broken when you're ahead and when the enemy doesn't build anti-heal. Not to mention people always underestimate Maokai's passive for some reason. Espc in low elo.

Please zwag, try this build in any tank you like: Unending despair (heal by existing) Bamis flame item (situational for AP or AD) Thornmail (why you crying ADC?) Spirit visage (more healing) abyssal mask (more magic pen, more damage, MORE HEALING) and you can decide which boots you make, if you want armor, mr or the coolest, magic pen boots for more damage and EVEN MORE HEALING

If my memory serves me correctly (granted this was before the release of Zeri, Maokai has the highest base attack speed + growth. I know Bel Veth has infinite so idk if that counts but from what I remember Maokai has the highest base stats and growth.

Hey! Ive been playing this a bit and its so hilarious. Ive got 1.3k heartsteel b4 and ur literally unkillable. Ive had entire teams on me and i just q and walk away laughing maniacally. Drained a ww's entire mana bar whaling on me another time. Laning phase is fun too, u literally just get to say no get off me everytime they engage.

winters,unending,spirit for ultimate tank core, but navori is insane on maokai, his attack speed scaling is one of the highest and the cooldown reduction works for his passive aswell the item synergy is through the roof.
