The damage when purchasing seems to be because of the relic that causes you to heal on gold gain also causing damage when losing gold.

Impressive builds Lightning Conductor relic Freeze and lightning. Azhi Dahaka's Eye relic with new dragon arcana Flame breath, Dragon Defense and Breakers of tiamat. Tips in the hub. buy Trial funds from Nazradin for 100 coins during your run. Save up atleast 180 chaos gems then Choose one arcana, relic and medallion(robe at the mirror I recommend Awe for crits or Fury for Signatures).

I tend to like defensive builds the most in games with "spiked" effects, like you get so much shield no damage ever reaches your health bar and every time someone hits you they damage themselves. Also, dough is "pasta" in Spanish and we definitely call money "pasta" so the concept is pretty widespread.
