Jameskii, I also live in a desert. Those warnings aren't for you; they're for the people in low areas. In a desert, the soil doesn't absorb as fast as water tends to come down; so it tends to roll downhill toward the low lying areas. Most desert landscapes have designated washes for this runoff to go into, but the washes are able to be accessed through nearby roads and walkways, and sometimes through people's alleyways. Here, we have tall mountains all around us that cause flash floods for EVERYONE, the water tends to quickly sweep around the valley and into specific low lying areas where we have designed basins to collect and help drain the water. THOSE people who live near the washes are in danger, it could seem like a small amount of water on the street to their children, only to have the water suddenly shift into a torrent and sweep them away. It happens every year. It doesn't have to be raining above them for this to occur, that's why they're flash floods, they're moving from the highest spot to the lowest spot VERY fast, and there could be NO warning, except for a little humidity and grey skies.

@@kasuraga This is where I live too, i was describing my experience with them having taken care of washes. There are plenty of washes that border parks, and the dangers of a flash flood while a child is inside of these easy to access washes is really one of the reasons I talk about it. There's a woman online "Living with Fern" or something like this. She is "all natural", doesn't believe you're a mother if you had a c-section, a lot of BS like this. She allows her child to eat rocks, which is not that big of a deal I guess; however what is a big deal is the fact she also will INTENTIONALLY go to the edges of washes, small rivers, and low lying areas, and let her child play in the water, DURING flash flood warnings. She doesn't believe in flash flood warnings. I will be unsurprised to hear that Fern nearly drowned one day, despite how sad I'll be for him.

For anybody who wants reference to the Kia Soul incident, Kia/Hyundai had a recall on their older cars due to a gas management issue which could cause fires. It was some type of module that would fail due to heat and certain vacuums not working. Not a GM level recall but still bad enough. Luckily KDM cars have great warranties and most dealers go above and beyond when issues arise or things need replaced.

The reason why we get flash flood warnings during monsoon season is because when there is a flash flood, it goes from a completly dry area to 3 inches of water in the street to beinging completly dry again. Don't worry though it is like the one time a year that it rains anyway.
