I'm Irish. That was the best England performance I have ever seen. They refused to be intimidated, didn't get drawn into pointless retaliation, which the Boks wanted them to do, and destroyed them with great rugby. How they managed to keep their composure and discipline is beyond me. Not one of them flinched over 80 minutes. I think the fact that so many SA fans were genuinely embarrassed by the thuggery led to a sea change in their approach to the game.

Spot on.. armchair fans who were watching at a time when your average back was 13st and loose forward about 16st, apparently bemoaning it going soft now.. a player from 2003 would not likely get through a match these days such is the weight, power and strength increases across the whole team 1-15 now. That’s why head knocks, tackles, rucks etc are so heavily monitored nowadays as opposed to pre-2010. Forwards especially are running into brick walls these days.. not saying you didn’t have to put in a hard shift back in 2003 to make yardage.. but the stopping power of every opponent isn’t like it is now. As a Scotsman, with no love for English Rugby, I can remember watching this match at the time and marvelling at the way they did not get dragged into a fight, just got on with the job of disassembling South Africa.

This was easily the greatest English side of the last 40 years. They had an uncanny ability to exploit the weaknesses of other Tier One nations, and just wear them into the ground with power and brute force, up front, and a brilliant backline of high IQ attack first backs. The current England side need look no further for how to win a World Cup than to watch footage of this epic team in action. It wasn't any surprise at all they went on to lift the Webb Ellis trophy the following year. Just a well oiled, crushing, killing and attacking rugby machine. Thanks for sharing this great archival footage.

Never been able to understand the cheap shots in union or league, one of the toughest sports there is why players feel the need to elbow somebody in the face when they are lying on the floor goes beyond 'sport' SA are a physical team always have been and I don't see much wrong with that but some of the behaviour here is assault

England beating the cheating South Africa - As it should be! 😂😂😂
@Gazereths12342 ай бұрын
This Boks side were pretty dirty. All Bok's sides are fierce and aggressive and I love that about them, but this was just plain dirty. Sneaky punches, stamping, I wouldn't be surprised if there was biting and eye gouging we didn't see. That high tackle should have been a red as well as a penalty try, but I think it was either or back in 2002. England responded in the best possible way, by abosultely demolishing them. I was so proud of our boys that day. Twickenham was a fortress back then.

One of the greatest England sides ever! South Africa had no answer to that team and they played dirty! But, England just went do you know what you can bash us as much as you like. But, we're going to take on the chin and beat you. If only England had a team like this now. It's too disjointed.

I still think that 'Modern day' England would win the vast majority of their games playing this style of rugby. It almost felt inevitable that the England side then would score after getting into the opposition 22.

Vintage England performance. I think this was when the Boks learnt that you need more than thuggery to beat the best.
