When Paullie has an espresso, and got ignored by the man he greets, that was actually David Chase, the creator of the show....

The generational loss of culture is a theme that pops up here and there throughout the course of the series and really adds another layer to an already dense show. Tony says it best in episode one "But lately, I'm getting the feeling that I came in at the end. The best is over." That line has multiple meanings across culture, the mob, the American dream etc. At one point, their grandparents all had these cultural connections (language, food, location), lived in the same neighborhood, went to the same churches.... This episode shows how divergent the cultures from the old country have become throughout generations. Compare the Italians in this episode to AJ and Meadow who up to this point basically just carry a last name with a vowel and not much else.

Love the ending with Tony coming home to Carmella. Carmella realizes she feels the exact same way her friend Angie feels when Tony comes home.

Tony probably thought that the reaction to the kid with firecrackers was a bit extreme, but he was also impressed by how Furio shielded the old boss Vittorio with his own body when he thought someone was shooting at them. Tony isn't sure any of his guys would do that for him. So that's probably why he really wanted Furio.

I just want to say how awesome it is you guys do those “Audience comment” segments before the reaction. Besides the greater insight you get for your initial viewing, i notice many people in the comments going out of their way to explain some of the deeper and often more subtle themes, character insights, and trivia that make this show so timeless. I’ve been a big fan of this show for a few years now. And even i find myself learning more about it from youtube comments and your videos. Hope you enjoy the show guys, it really gets even better from here.

They're in North Caldwell, NJ. And somebody asked if you'd recognize those things in the intro if you drove through Jersey-you would! I did just a few months ago on a road trip to Connecticut and I was shocked at how much of it is still there and just right by the interstate.

A lot of the stuff is still the same in northern Jersey. Some name changes but you would recognize a lot from the intro.

When they were in the car at the end, they were sharing how the trip went, but both Paulie and Tony were lying to feel better. Paulie was pretending he fit in when he obviously didn’t. Tony was saying he got great prices on the cars because he was mad realizing that she (don’t recall the name of the boss) took advantage of his lust to get the cars for cheap.

You will hear references to several towns all over Northern New Jersey during the series. Tony's Soprano's family's territory is pretty much all of Northern New Jersey.

You guys are very insightful as usual. Yes Carm is projecting and it is crazy how hard she is fighting to keep them together not knowing all the intimate details of their relationship. Also, Tony kept it in his pants, but he didn’t have the option. She was feeling him out and using it as a negotiating tactic. She was never going to let him smash. This has been my opinion on this interaction.

North Jersey, in general. North Caldwell, because that is where Tony lives, some say Newark, for various reasosn, prequel movie included, Tony mentioned that Bloomfield and Garfield, I think, goes to him with the whole "Junior as the boss" deal. Overall North Jersey. There is a decent documentary about DeCavalcante family from New Jersey which is called "The Real Sopranos" and it starts with actual surveillance recording on which members of the family discuss Sopranos saying things like "What is this fucking thing, Is that supposed to be us...?", "There is pork store, in Jersey, right? They also got a topless joint there, Jesus". However, I don't think it is 100% deliberately "based" on this family, it's just David Chase writing about the environment and people he grew up with and people he was, and still is, surrounded. Although, some facts are a bit too close, like previous boss at the moment of "airing" who's name was Giacomo "Jackie" Amari died of stomach cancer, some other events also that kind of would be a spoiler for the show, which does prove that some things are indeed "based" on DeCavalcante family.

This episode touches on a point of Carmella's morals and thoughts about being married to Tony and how she see's their relationship. You guys picked up on it when she tried to convince Angie to stay with pussy that she was projecting. I've always found her mentality very interesting because she seems like a very moral person but she is married to a mobster and shows no disgust or negativity towards Tony for that reason. Carmella tried convincing Angie because Carmella fears that if someone in the same position as her can leave her murderous criminal husband so could she and she would have no reason to stop herself from doing so. It is almost as if she is trying to convince herself as well as Angie that they should stick it out for some reason, maybe because a lack of self esteem or a greater fear of being alone.

The guy saying “n-- who else?” Then it cutting to the Italians that are actually behind it is hilarious to me. Clever writing by David Chase. Shows that someone’s perspective can be so far off from the reality

I agree with Davi about Tony’s reason for wanting Furio, although Abe is right, it may help the business connection with the Italians, too. More of a factor, in my opinion, is Tony doesn’t trust Paulie. Paulie may be loyal, but he isn’t serious and is a bit dim. He isn’t paying attention at dinner, interrupts Tony, whereas Furio is very sharp & pays attention to everything, he gets the big picture & the small details -plus, he’s brutally violent without hesitation.

They are not necessarily in competition though. Tony is moving Paulie (and Silvio) up, and so is in need of new enforcers.

@@darth856 Good point! And since Furio just publicly beat a women and child without a moment’s hesitation (while others like Paulie were protesting), he looks like a valuable enforcer.

@@darth856 You’re right, Tony definitely took note of that. Furio was very artful with the translation at dinner, too. And when Tony complained about Nino being insecure & difficult to deal with, Furio immediately understood and came up with a solution by setting up a meeting for him with Annalisa. Smart cookie, biscotto intelligente!
