Hi I’m a wildlife biologist, I’ve looked into moth man a lot because I work near the area. I can’t speak to many other sightings but this first sighting was very likely to be an owl that got spooked by the car. It’s probably a barred owl, barn owl, or a migratory Snowy owl which is known to stop over on the area on its journey from the Canaan valley/black water area to Canada. I personally think it was a snowy owl as they are substantially larger than a barred or barn owl and are known to get the red glow from lights. Another very possible culprit and maybe the most likely is the great horned owl. The reason I didn’t mention this earlier is because they are very rare but are still present in this area. A great horned owl would have a very similar silhouette to Mothman. In the dark high and scared I find it very plausible that the kids saw an owl in the field, spook it, and watch it fly over head and squeak.

Many sighting account even mention how mothman’s eye is like in the chest or doesn’t have a head or whatever, which matches an owl’s general shape/silhouette.

I know the SCP foundation is fictional, but a lot of the Mothman entry tracks with the discussed lore. The idea of it being an unstable entity which could only sustain a cohesive form when perceived by enough people is a pretty neat thing to explore. lt also claims that the bridge collapse was not because of the Mothman, but a coincidence locals connected to him, which in turn gave rise to him becoming a harbinger. Regardless, i am hooked to this channel, please keep up the regular uploads!

It’s hilarious that I never knew about the moth man till 6 or so years ago being 25ish. When I was a teen me and a buddy smoked a lot of pot. And would always get moths in the room on a trips in and out (had an outside door in room) anyways whenever a moth came in and started attacking the light we would pull our hoods over our heads screaming moth man!!!. While flinging windmill punches in its general direction. Honestly, some of the best memories came from the things that got broken. Amazing times. Happy new years boys!

My D&D campaign has the “mothman” as more of an oracle type creature native to the continent where the story takes place. I visualize them as the Fallout76 mothman enemy. And within the campaign it is known that encountering one in the wild is a bad omen. They aren’t hostile until provoked or backed into a corner and they also have a tendency to stalk characters or npcs who have an unfortunate future ahead of them. This cryptid is one of my favorites in history because of how inspiring and neat the idea is

MothMan was a large barn owl on a tree branch and spread his wings to scare off the humans that were "coming after" it's nest. If you look up Barn owls and the pose the make to scare things off it looks like they have no neck when bowed up and of course the glowing/reflecting red eyes of a bird. To conclude, Large barn owl, perched on a tree limb 7 or 8 feet off the ground. Barn owls are incredibly common in the area as well.
