There’s something about the pause between “and I hope you die” “I hope we both die.” It feels like the person realizes that the death of the one they’re singing about won’t be enough to erase whatever happened, and that they themself would also have to die to move past it. I don’t think I’ll ever stop loving those lines.
@trollanlord854 ай бұрын
I always interpreted it as one of the partners yelling "I hope you die" and the other partner responds with "I hope we both die" to tie in with the "you are coming down with me", but this is such a more emotional interpretation

This isn’t a song about hate, it’s a song about fear. It’s about fearing what is already written on the walls, and trying to take control in a desperate attempt to convince yourself that you’re broken enough to sadistically crave and embrace the co-self-destruction.

_"Your mother and I have decided to stay together, if only for appearances. The last thing we want people to think is that we don't care about our own kids. That's one fact that's none of their business."_ Moral Orel is a hilarious show. Meromorphic has a great video about the whole thing, front to back. I recommend everyone watch the show, then watch his video on it. But hilarity aside... being abused as a kid by heavily religious parents (and now being a father myself), Moral Orel showed me how to put a lot of things that happened in my own childhood into some perspective. And I'm more reassured that I'm doing much better nowadays, both with myself and with my own children. In all honesty, I was so glad when they let us know Orel was finally happy, in the end. Stupid show to get all emotional about, fake characters and all, but idk... it got to me sometimes.

This song reminds me of that longing for things to end horribly and bitterly because that’s what you’re used to. The only security you have in your relationships is knowing they will fail, and when it does, you can say “I knew it. I knew they wouldn’t stay”. This song is that feeling. That feeling of knowing you ruin things because that’s all you know to do. You ruin your connections because you can’t keep them healthy because you’re scared they’ll actually WORK. You feel unloveable, so you make sure everyone knows you are, and if they disagree, they won’t for long.

I disagree, I’ve experienced that feeling plenty of times and normally that one is accompanied by something resembling joy. Like you have the pain inside you, and want to spread it as much as you can before leaving.

I'm 6 years old sitting in my dads car as he drives me to the meeting place halfway between where my mom lives and my dad lives. We had an okay weekend, he rented movies we watched together and we tried to play some video games but the skill difference between a 6 year old and a 28 year old is pretty drastic. The divorce is still pretty recent and it's hitting me really hard. My dad puts in one of his CDs of music he likes. He made about a dozen of them and this sing was on the one he put on that day. I didn't get the lyrics, but I really liked the music. It sounded so jaunty and happy. I learned the lyrics pretty quick since it wasnt a long CD we listened to it a few times during the 90 minute drive. We finally arrive at a gas station in Chehalis and I hug my dad goodbye as I get into my moms car. All I could think about was this song. I start humming it and after 20 minutes I sing some of the lyrics to myself. My mom is very shocked and asked where I heard those words said. I told her it was a song my dad was listening to. Without knowing it I caused another fight and the rest of the car ride was very quiet.

I was 15 years old. I had this friend named Brolin in the year above me. Absolute genius of a guy. Legit, he got the highest standardized exam scores of my entire country and got an award for it. Me and him used to hang out after school sometimes and jam on my guitar, or the piano they left in the auditorium or just both. But mostly we'd just talk about music we liked. I didn't really know much about indie or outsider or just plain "unknown" music back then. One afternoon while we're hanging out, he says "Wanna hear the happiest depressing song ever??" I of course said "FUCK YES!!!". He then showed me this song and it... genuinely... blew my fucking MIND. I discovered more of John Darnielle afterwards, which led me on a loooooong track of my current weird music taste. But, I know it's hard for a lot of people to really pinpoint where their own taste in music stems from. I even have a hard time when it comes to the nitty-gritty. But if I ever had to choose one moment that truly influenced everything today... I would say, "Thanks, Brolin. You genuinely changed my life."

It isn't about "we are both terrible" It is about her hand being a hand like any other that is just a lovable hand and my hand being unlovable and her hand taking my hand as I am playing her this love song that is completely destroying the relationship and I see it in her eyes. Knowing I am ending a relationship over what I think to be a love song, I know I am unlovable and thus my hand is unlovable. Keep in mind, I wrote this song on the spot while staring her in the eyes and seeing the relationship is over in her eyes. Because I knew her that well.

She is the greatest love I ever let get away. None were greater than her, and I haven't loved since.

Slowly pulling out into an empty heaven, the winds howling, his prayer unanswered.
@darknight100002 жыл бұрын
@@MrGemHunter Those events are saddening but they aren't on the same level as Clay shooting Orel or Ms. Sculptham reliving the time she was raped and using it as a way to get off. Or how Bloberta desperately tried to find love and attention form other people and was crushed when it turned out none of those people loved her. Or Clay causing his own family to unravel when he was a child due to his own selfish nature. The point of that last moment in the Christmas special was to show that no matter what happens to him Orel still hoped and believed things would turn out okay. You don't need God or any other omnipotent being to answer Orel back while he prays. Praying in silence is the point. It's not the result or lack thereof from praying. It's just to show that Orel won't let the world crush his spirit no matter what. If anything it also shows that Orel took what his grandfather wrote to him to heart.

But at the same time neither want any of it and want everything to blow up so it can just be over. “Our friends say it’s darkest before the sun rises but we’re pretty sure they’re all wrong. “ I feel like this a lot. Perhaps not the was the song describes. I don’t have a bad partner. But I just kinda want things to burn away, so I don’t have to go on anymore. To hell with people who try to impose themselves in my life. To hell with people who insist on forgiving me when I don’t want them in my life. To hell with bubbly anecdotes for a carefree life. I’m here living out my misery the best I can, hoping one day it puts me somewhere I can just be me. Life doesn’t do checks and balances on happiness. A decade ago I described it as "brutally upbeat" when I was trying to explain to someone why I love this horrible genius song so much.

I know everyone has these deep theories on the songs meaning, my mom told me a theory that I like. It's just when you and your partner get very mad at each other over something dumb, and you both know you shouldn't argue over it because its dumb, but neither of you are giving up. That's why he sings 'I hope you blink before I do.'. He's so dedicated on winning that he doesnt even want to lose at blinking.

That's also a fun theory but I think "blink" is supposed to mean "die" 😅

Ngl, one of my favorite interpretations. It just....fits. Really, really well. I hope you get better soon, @Yeehaw Opossum, good luck with your life.

This song brings on an emotion I cannot name. It's like you just come down from a fit of rage and now you are filled with a calm sense of hatred

So I’m currently trying to get out of a toxic relationship, and this song made me really put into perspective how toxic the relationship actually was. I’ve listened to this song god knows how many times because of how relatable the message is. I’ve broken down because of it. But I’m almost out. I’m so close to not relating to this song. Wish me luck, comment section. Im working off the confidence to finally cut it off. Update: we broke up! It was complicated, difficult, and stressful but I don’t regret it at all. And if anyone else dealt with something like this I am so so sorry and just know that you are strong. You can do this. It may seem impossible but don’t give up.

Some people are meant to be in our lives for only a certain period of time and that's ok. 🙂 I hope both of you are doing great now.

to anyone saying #1 wedding song, you are either the best couple that will never get tired of each other or one of you is going to murder the other.

“Sacrifice! Exactly! I sacrificed! The ultimate sacrifice! My happiness for my kids! You bet I did! You bet I did…and I’d do it again, too! I'd do it over and over again! That's my life! Over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over…” “Ok, Clay. I get the point.” “NO! YOU! DON’T!”

To me, the emotion in that last line has always felt very... real. In my opinion the person who voiced him (a co-creator of the series, I believe) did a fucking outstanding job at realistically portraying that bitter, manipulative, miserable man.

This song radiates self-destructive and chaotic depressing energy. I seriously love the way this song sounds but it also makes me so sad.

Its not about self destruction But its a consequence of giving up on something that big in your life You dont have to end someone time on earth, to kill the soul or numb it nearly to death

The lyrics seem so absurdly pessimistic that I just find them funny.

I want more Moral Orel... Maybe one day we'll get goth Morel, but no we will not. Thanks to the show for allowing us to hear this song.
