Everyone jokes about how the Mountain Goats "aren't actually mountain goats". Well, here's John, growing that beard that proves that he is, indeed, a mountain goat.

In 2019, you came to my town, but I was dealing with so much anxiety I was scared to take a different bus route to the concert, then covid happened. Your music got me through that year, so hearing you're going on tour, and if there's a stop near my place, I'm definitely going.

Take John’s blessing, and start right after he gives it at 6:32 with playback speed at x0.75 or x0.5 and you get a really baked guy showing you his cool sticker. For the record, this is the standard effect on normal speech, which means you were talking just fine 👍 😎 👍.

if we ever actually get that 12 episode series on writing as labor I will be linking it to everyone I know regardless of their interest. Then the next time I see them, if they haven't watched it, I'll explain each episode to them in painstaking detail. In other words that sounds like extremely my shit.

That's exactly opposite of how I think about chords (don't see the full sound, but hear every different note in the chord), but the chord progression? That's exactly how I think. "Can't be the third, could it be the fifth? Still no." And then yell "FUCK", because no chord works perfectly. But you can't do that bit on the video.

I think the reason people tend to feel artistic endeavours differ from regular labour is because with regular labour, almost everyone is getting paid by a timely rate. You clock in; you know you have a contract. Whereas for the artist, only the very lucky know they’ll be getting paid anything at all. The incentives are different. Questions like “what is your creative process?” and “how do you find motivation?” are actually proxies for the question: how do you get yourself to work outside of, and despite, the incentives of capital? It’s not intentionally aggrandising the artist. In fact, it’s acknowledging (or hoping) that it isn’t all mystery, magic, and muses. In the world of capital, when you’re not getting paid, it can be a struggle to do the challenging things you would love to do. There are psychological hurdles, questions of time management, questions of method. These are the logistics of creativity. And some people seek guidance from their heroes, the people who have succeeded and come before. They want something more concrete and less trite than “if it’s meant to be, you won’t be able to not do it”. Because there have been millions of people who try to jump the chasm between their material conditions and their artistic aspirations, and the gap has been too wide. But if they had a blueprint, a roadmap, a teacher who says “this is what I do; this is how I manage”, then maybe they too could find their way.

Admittedly, artists aren’t necessarily teachers, and it’s fair if they just don’t know how to talk about it. But it never hurts to ask in case you find one that does.
