It's so sad to me as a viewer that this movie is an understatement to the true story its based off of. Usually movies exaggerate the true story, but not in this case. In reality, she (and her children) had it 10x worse than this. She actually gave birth to way more children, too. For positive news, she is now married and her family is doing well, and all live together in safety and solitude!

@@MotherOfDragons420 OH no no, I don't think it's making anything enticing! I also don't mean anything bad about the movie, it's a good representation. Maybe 'glamorize' isn't the right word. I mean like, they make her basement look nice and put together when really it was mostly packed dirt, seeping mud and water, and rat infested. They show she gave birth to 3 children, but really she birthed more. Things like that 😅 Just noting how people watch it and feel so horrified over such terrible things, and it breaks my heart to know it was actually even worse. No hate to the movie!

The real girl, named Elisabeth Fritzl, was held captive in the basement for 24 years. She gave birth to 7 children from that POS. It breaks my heart to hear about her story. It baffles me how the mother didn't know what was going on below her home. It's said that she was told he was building a nuclear shelter down there and that Elisabeth ran away to join a cult. Smfh.

People always blame the moms for not knowing the horrific things their husbands do. Who would think their spouse was capable of this?!? My friend just had a nervous breakdown when she found out her husband had been sexually abusing their daughter for years. Her world has been torn apart. Now she’s paranoid and doesn’t think she can trust anyone. Honestly her poor daughter is coping better than her. My great grandfather sexually abused my aunt as a child. Of course my grandparents and that pervs wife had no idea. Predators are sneaky AF and usually sociopaths who are amazing liars.

This took place in Austria. Authorities have gone to great lengths to conceal Elisabeth’s identity from the public in hopes of giving her the most normal life possible after the horrors she endured. She has taken on a new name since her release, and she currently lives in an Austrian village referred to as “Village X” to keep its location hidden. . Her now-grown children have undergone therapy to work through their myriad traumas. Still, they sleep with their bedroom doors permanently open. Security guards are always patrolling the two-story home, and it has constant CCTV surveillance. Though there is little public information about her post-imprisonment life, in 2019, reports claimed that Elisabeth and her bodyguard “found love.” The village residents of this town know of this family. They protect the family and have chased off visitors and reporters

The most horrifying part about this is this is just one of the stories we KNOW ABOUT. There's tons of stories about people being held prisoner in basements for decades. But those are the ones about the people we found, or found out about. If there's that many we know about, imagine how many people are in this exact situation RIGHT NOW that we will never find out about. This could be anyone, this could be your neighbor doing this shit, and you'd never know. That's what does my head in.

@@TheMikeLawz the true story does explain a lot of things though. Like how the mother was a very submissive person and the husband abusive and overpowering so she didn't really question him. Also if someone went into the basement there was actually an office space and a hidden door so if someone went down there they would only find an office pretty much. The house was also bigger and they even had tenants. The "father" would also show pictures of the kids living upstairs to the one's in the basement to make them jealous. It's a really wild and sad story. And even the officers who went to the basement had to get therapy.

Fritzl actually had a tenant in his house, a young man with a dog. The dog would sometimes jump up and bark or cry and run to some corner of the room. The young man thought his dog was just a little crazy, but truth is that that the dog probably smelled and heard something from the basement. So upsetting that Elizabeth and the children could have been saved earlier if people had just paid attention 😔

I'm still shocked whenever I think about this story. This movie didn't even show HALF of what she went through. She had so many more pregnancies than the 3 that are shown here. It got to a point where her son & daughter weren't just mad at her because they were stuck in a basement, but he started to ENCOURAGE them to verbally and physically abuse their own mother. Even after her escapes, she and her mother had no relationship for around a year, because she thought that her moth could have been involved (which wasn't helped by the fact that the police thought she was for a while too).

They have people that go to the store or run errands for them. So I googled the real-life story this is based on. And it gets even worse - they might be moving him to a normal prison (right now he's in a prison for the criminally insane). Why is this bad? Because it makes him eligible for early release. He could be out as soon as 2024, which would mean he spent 9 years fewer in captivity than his daughter did. Which would be SO messed up. EDIT: Oh my god. I kept reading. Apparently his lawyer in the original case actually tried to make the argument "He's not a monster - he brought his captives a Christmas tree!"

I think she was able to get 2 of her kids out to live upstairs. They were younger, but ao much bigger than her "basement kids" since their growth was stunted. Her relationship with her mom was never the same. So understandable because you just never went downstairs because your husband said theres rats?? 20+ years!!

I remember when this movie popped up on the TV channel my mom and I were watching. We were both sick to our stomachs. She fell asleep about halfway through but, I stayed up till at least 3-4 am finishing the damn thing. I have literally not felt as sick about ANY movie as I had this one. I hated every minute of it, but I couldn’t look away and wanted to see that POS get caught. By the time it was over my mom was snoring, I had dirty tissues littering my blanket, my eyes were hardly able to stay open, and I just felt numb. The actors did an AMAZING JOB.

“Elisabeth was held captive in the basement for 24 years and forced to endure countless assaults and rapes from Josef. During her time spent in captivity, she birthed seven children - three who lived in the basement with her, one who tragically passed as a result of breathing difficulties, and the remaining three, who were taken to live upstairs with Josef, Rosemarie and Elisabeth's siblings, having been reported as abandoned babies. Over the course of these years, Josef would visit Elisabeth on an almost daily basis, providing food and carrying out his assaults. They were allowed a television, radio and cassette player, with Elisabeth teaching the children how to read and write. He threatened each of them by claiming they would be gassed if they attempted to escape (which was later proven to be an empty threat, as there was no gas supply to the basement).”

We should have gotten a sequel where it shows the trial , aftermath, the girls healing arc, & him answering for his crimes. There could also be a big flashback to when he locked his abusive mother in the attic. Maybe his mom could be played by Kathy Bates.

In the actual case she was held captive for 24 years, had 7 kids (2 died), and the mom raised three of them upstairs. Once she was freed she moved them all to a small town where the residents protected them from the press, and she eventually found love with her bodyguard.

I hate that they made the mom look like she was suffering & sad & depressed the entire time …. Um no ? The story of Josef Fritzel is real & no the mom 100% believed him when Josef said she ran away to a cult she barely looked for her & she eventually gave up looking for her . Like that’s so fucking messed up that they twisted the story to make the mom look like a caring & loving mom she wasn’t .

The only gripe I have with the movie is she was pregnant at year 14 and 17 but we only saw the stillbirth at year 17. It never explained what happened to the pregnancy from year 14. That confused me. But the real life story is even more wild than this. She had more kids than in the movie and the bunker he built to keep them in was insane! An absolute piece of filth! Also, if yall thought this was bad, try watching The Girl Next Door, the movie based on the real life case of Sylvia Likins. I've never watched it but I've heard it's brutal. A horrifying story for sure.

It's so sad that things like this happens in real life and I do hope that with the advent of newer technology, stuff like these will be prevented easily.
