In July 1985, in the little town of Ballinspittle, Cork, Ireland a bizarre event gripped the town as people saw the grotto statue of the Virgin Mary come alive. My uncle, the last statue maker in Ireland made the statue in 1955. This is the story as reported on BBC TV Newsnight (although the end is missing)

That's a fine statement when used correctly but can't be used to justify bloody every stupid thing someone gets in their head or there would be no need for psychiatric wards.. "I seen a pig in a field and it started singing Elvis, then it told me to kill a bunch of women, which I did" THROW AWAY THE KEY THIS LAD IS MENTAL, "Am I though? I believe it to be true no matter how much you think I'm a nutjob and remember For those who have faith No explanation is necessary. For those without faith No explanation is possible" TRUE, LET THIS MAN LEAVE, HE HAS FAITH. NO EXPLANATION NEEDED FINE SIR.

When I was 8 or 9 (1990 or 1991), I was on summer holidays with my family, down in Co. Cork. My Mam brought us to go to Mount Mellerey, Co Waterford. I remember everyone at this holy grotto, on the side a mountain, praying. Very boring altogether. But, after a couple of hours, everyone was leaving. We came to the road side and someone said "look at the sun". My first thought was "surprise", that I could look at the sun and it didn't hurt my eyes. Then I rrealised it was spinning around the sky, doing massive loops, again and again. Some small loops, some bigger ones, but very fast. It went on for about 2 or 3 minutes, and near the end it made this massive loop, going below the horizon and back up, and everyone watching in unison said "oooooOOOOOoooohh". I mean everyone there, about 30-40 people, saw the same thing, including my Mam, Dad, Brother and Sister. Still, I say it was the most bizarre thing I have every seen and we all remember it.Anyway, it's called "the miracle of the dancing sun". Weird!!!

The spinning/dancing of the sun also happened during one of Mary"s appearances in Fatima, Portugal. This miraculous event was witnessed by many. Some who were not believers, instantly became believers that day. 🙏

This story is amazing. I wonder if the maker of this film was to visit all those who spoke on the film would they be embarrassed or would they stand by what they saw then. I was around then and saw nothing unusual at the grotto.

Sullivn, I saw this statue move in July 1977. I was with a friend, driving down the road at night, and the crown was lit up, so we thought the statue was motorized. We were staying at a little place call O'Neals Inn in Garrettstown, and when we got back we asked the proprietor and her nieces who worked there what made the statue move. They looked at us like we were nuts and said, "The statue doesn't move!" So we loaded a bunch of them into the car and drove them down the road to the statue. It was stil moving and they all knelt down, saying, "it's a miracle." We came home and told people about it but nobody really believed us. Then in 1985 my mom called me and asked where in Ireland I had seen the moving statue. I said, "Ballinspittle." She said, "You're not going to believe this," and read me a story from the Associated Press, "Thousands flock to moving statue." Yes, I believe it.

I went there with my older brother when I was 10. I remember there were fields on a hill in front of the statue where the people massed. We were told going in, under no circumstances were we to take flash photography of the statue. There were two lights setup to the left and right of the statue shining on it. Also in 1985 we had an unusually hot summer so plenty of clear skies each night, which added to the effect. We got there about two hours before sunset but it wasn't until sunset and it started getting dark, that the optical illusion started working. I vividly remember the statue bowing forward and from side to side. It repeated this over and over. It also had a strobe effect as it moved, as if the image entering my eyes was missing frames. This of course was due to the artificial lights shining on the statue and what the movie making industry call the magic hour, which is the last hour of sunlight at dusk. This combined with staring at the statue for hours was what caused this illusion for everyone. For people that say the saw the face of jesus or someone else on the statue, again that was just a trick of the light and shadows. The rest of the strange phenomenon can be explained due to hysteria surrounding the event.

I understand people thinking this is nonsense. However, to fill in an evening I went down to Ballinspittle with a few friends (all in our early 20's). I didn't believe for 1 second that I'd see a statue moving! From the first time I saw it as we walked up the hill it appeared to be moving and never stopped (no staring at it as many suggest!) We all saw it. Very hard to figure out and strangely I didn't find it a religious experience at all! However I'm now slow to dismiss claims of others!

Hey, I'm now in my 20s and I also grew up in Cork (and my dad often brought us to see the infamous Ballinspittle grotto) -- but we never saw anything unusual take place there (but I do believe your own reported experience, BTW). Adding to that, I was also brought to Knock as a young child (age 9 or so) but, again, I honestly never witnessed anything out-of-sorts occurring up there. However, I did go on to have a number of strange and unexpected (and apparently unrelated) 'paranormal' experiences myself, when I was in my teens and beyond. I believe there's a whole world out there, beyond the one we deal with on a mundane daily basis. Also. I love animals! Anyway, if you want to talk more, just email me at universalsoul1212@gmail.com. :-)

in a church in Bohola, the wooden statue of Mary left her pedestal and danced when a Vatican Secret DJ played "The Teddy Bear's Picnic" and then became wood again. in Rio, the same thing happened before tens of thousands of worshipers, she danced a genuine Samba d' Rua and then became wood again. in a church for retired show-people she tap danced before returning to wood. i am a believer. any woman who had a kid, claims she's still a virgin, and gets away with it is to be taken seriously.

@liamwarner If you think that what happened in this irish town was bad, then you should have seen (maybe youve already heard about) what happened in Fátima, Portugal. In 1917, three children claimed they had seen a Marian apparition floating above a tree in a field. She told them that a miracle would occur 5 months from then. 5 months later, faith-charged assembled crowd claimed the sun started spinning wildly in the sky and careened towards the ground in a zig-zag motion. Everyone cried miracle
@MsDormy
@MsDormy Жыл бұрын
You need to understand that all the onlookers of the Fatima miracle were not faithful believers, many were scepters expecting to be able to laugh the event off. It had been completely wet - sodden with rain and mud, but you can see from the photographs afterwards, the ground and everyone’s clothes were dried by the dancing sun. 🙏

Catholic idolatry causes this nonsense. Years of them treating statutes as if they really were Mary, Jesus, Joseph etc. You only have to watch people in a Catholic church, kissing statues feet etc and see they treat them as divine, it is no wonder then you make the leap into moving statues. Sad.

I got taken along by my mother to see the statue at the time. I wasn't religious even then, but I had a lovely view of the Milky Way, which kept me occupied while we were there. We went at night, and the statue was lit up, surrounded by darkness, so certainly if you stared at it for long enough you could imagine it moving. Try staring at anything lit up in darkness and you'll see what I mean!
@johnhills335

My wife and I have been there, and there is no doubt the statue "moves" after watching for a while. It is likely from atmospheric influences. Nevertheless, when one contemplates the universe and its presently incomprehensible aspects, it would be a very simple thing for a statue to move, and if it does on its own, it would be nothing compared with the mysteries of our universe. I wouldn't mind being around somewhere a few billion years from now to reflect upon Ballinspittle and what we would then know of our miracle universe. John Hills.

@liamwarner Then, it was fast and simple: The Vatican granted it the status of miracle in 1930, a shrine was built in the then-forsaken place, religious shops mushroomed and since then the town has become a big religious cash-in. Nowadays, there is a gigantic basilica with a central tower 65 metres (213 ft) high, and one of the largest churches in the world was built on the other side of the shrine during the 2000s.

Yes, but i fear religion will ALWAYS be dangerous. People need to have a good educational background and enough information to choose between religious creed or to rationalize themselves. For example, my dad left seminary and abandoned his early dream of becoming a missionary priest when he was young because he came to a point where he "had more questions than answers and no one knew how to answer them".

Religious fervour meets rural tedium in a spectacle of utter mass hysteria. I regard this whole phenomenon as a kind of social death throe reflex, as simple, devout and rural piety was about to give way to modernity. This struggle manifested itself, most absurdly, in front of these "moving statues". Thank God those days are behind us 😉.

You believe what you want to believe in this life! We all search for meaning at some point in life, it's a human condition, but Catholicism along with other religions, has superstition and blind faith ingrained within it!

What DO y'all mean by "move"? Everyone see something different? A wink? Wiggle her ears? Give you a wave? Or a smile? Pretend what you wish to believe.

If you stare at something still for long enough, it will begin to appear to move/shimmer. Try it. Add to that a bit of hysteria and - bingo! 'Miracle' !

if you look at something long enough it will move, it's the same with a box of roses, look at the rose on the box and it moves after a few minutes

Ok..I have taken on board what you have said in your reply. I have checked for these intelligent people who researched these sites/ apparitions seemingly without any bias or agenda. I couldn't find who they are on the net. Could you tell me who theses people are or were? Your faith is stronger than mine...fair enough. But please spare your pity for those who need it...like the many ill and desperate people than can seen in Lourdes who go there for some miraculous cure.

Quite right, people enjoy supersition, we love to daydream, and movies make it dramatic. The difference is, most people know the difference between fact and fiction. Why should we show respect to the obviously deluded, when even the bishop does not?
