That MR2 was for the Japanese car guy who didn't want to drive what everyone else was driving, but couldn't afford the RX-7. I had a buddy back in the day who was into this MR2 while the rest of us drove Civics and Integras. And he thought Hondas were grocery-getters at heart, not real race cars like the RX-7, Supra, 300ZX. And he had a point, sort of. But since he couldn't afford any of those, the MR2 was the obvious choice. Nobody could ever accuse a mid-engine, rear-drive car of being a grocery getter. The MR2 was like a bridge between the economy community and the race car community.

The Fiero was dead before this gen MR2 came out in the U.S. The MR2 was sold worldwide, the Fiero was almost entirely sold in North America only

MR2 had no direct competition. The Lotus Esprit was a much higher price point as was the NSX. The S2000 only came out when the mk2 MR2 stopped production. The actual competitor was the MX5 but only so far as it was an affordable sports car.

Had two of these. Red ukdm and a black jdm. Both first gen mk2, the jdm variant was a complete animal for a na car with so many jdm options such motorized fog lights that turned in the same direction when driving round corners. Slender up selling for a mk2 jdm crx which I also still regret selling. I’d love another of each

Great video. I drive a BMW M2Competition and a fully built MR2 turbo. Guess what puts more smile on my face haha. MRs are so insanely underrated, don't even get me started, they are quicker than a stock NSX .. Came here through your Grasroots Drift video in Japan. I am visiting Japan the second time very soon. I was there a couple of years ago visiting big tuners and racetracks. It was a blast. My friend and me are both MR2 turbo drivers. Do you have current events in End August/September as a recommendation? I heard Daikoku is avoided by locals now? We plan to go to Fuji Speedway again and Idlers at Tsukuba.

The M2 is a fun car.. but there's some special about that raw feel of the old cars. For Japan... I've got a list of all the tuner shops and initial d locations (hit me up on IG) your trackdays sound awesome... For me it's all about renting a car and just getting out. Hakone and Touge drives... PS Diakoku is still cool, but definitely overflowing with tourists.. I still stop every night I'm in the Tokyo area before heading back to the hotel

S2000 came out WAAAAY later. This wasn't competing with anything in its price class.

Iv had a few of them over the years. Ino mater what iv had i keep getting drawn back to to an mr2. I have a jdm turbo that landed on my lap a few years ago. This one i is for keeps this time. If the turbo motor ever pops i will 2gr v6 it. They dont need or even like too much power. Far nicer with the stock v6

It was supposed to be an affordable exotic. If you couldn't afford a Lotus Esprit, Ferrari 348, any other mid engine exotic. You bought an MR2 Turbo.
