Salt is a generic term and describes the product of neutralising an acid by an alkali. The salt that is often cited in the criticism of cleaners is sodium chloride (used on chips and roads).....as this provides an electrolyte for galvanic corrosion The muc off product may well not contain sodium chloride but the sodium salt of a benign component. So we should be careful to not confuse generic names with specific chemical compounds
@nbandpinportugal4 жыл бұрын
According to the video and, apparently, MUC Off, the sodium salt in the product is not just benign it has anti corrosion properties. But we still don't know what it is.

Thank you Stuart for this comprehensive update - As you’ve stated, it would only have been a matter of time before someone else would have raised the Muc.-Off salt issue that your diligent research identified. On the basis of all your good work, l’m totally reassured in continuing to use Muc-Off products. Like the rest of your community l am very grateful for your efforts as ever to keep us informed and updated on the best care of our ‘pride and joys’. I have pencilled the Bonnie for the ‘Full Fillingham’ on Sunday morning! Top man.

I’ve always used Jizer as a degreaser since the 70’s and my bikes have never shown any signs of corrosion- My Z1000 which I’ve had since new and is now 15 years old is pristine and unmarked with zero corrosion plus buying a 5 litre Can is considerably cheaper than using products like muc-off- but hey it’s a free world when it comes to cleaning products.

That's a relief, I've just purchased 2x5L of Muc Off. Thank you for your hard work in getting to the bottom of this issue. Since watching your original "Full Fillingham" video, which is incredibly easy to find by the way, my bike always gets comments about how clean and shiny it is. It gets ridden regularly in all weathers, but takes little time and effort to regain its sheen thanks to your advice. Keep it up Sir, your efforts are greatly appreciated.

Solid research and honorable behavior on your part, Stuart. Well done!
Wow! Mr. Fillingham, you're integrity and dedication to showing and recommending the best products for your viewers is very commendable indeed! And all this whilst not dissing out any competitors makes it all the more admirable. Meanwhile, those histories of some corrosion observed on bikes could have been caused from insufficient or inefficient cleaning up after using the cleaning agent. I've seen this happen in my line of work. Keep the posts coming! And as a newly proud owner of T120, I've enjoyed every video of yours on the same and have successfully used your techniques and advice to good effect. Look forward to more...

Thanks for the clarification re salt. Only problem is if bike manufacturers can say a warranty is void by using this type of cleaner due to salt then the type salt whether good or bad is moot
@brockett5 жыл бұрын
First of all another great, "from the heart" video, Stuart. Back in the day, nineteen hundred and frozen to death when I first worked on the railway we used a very thin detergent called 'Tepol' for washing floors walls etc. Later i learned that washing up liquid manufacturers used a similar detergent to which they added perfumes and salt. The salt made it thicker and housewives thought, quite wrongly, the thicker the liquid the higher the quality. When my uncle had heart trouble his GP told his wife to thoroughly rinse the washing up so as to remove residual salt. Indeed, if I am offered a cup of tea that has been drained and not rinsed I can taste salt on the rim as I drink. In the mid sixties a car shampoo company carried out research that showed cars washed in washing up liquid suffered severe rusting due to particles of salt that penetrated the somewhat porous paint finishes that where common at the time. I fully accept your explanation as to what MUC OFF say regarding the type of salt and their reason for adding it. All that said, I find all these bike wash solutions good at removing dust and light dirt but useless at removing oil or grease no matter how light. Chain lube fling on the back of the bike and rear wheel generally needs a degreaser. I use Paraffin on a rag, WD40, and light wash with supermarket liquid detergent followed by a thorough rinse. The last being the most important .

Hmm, some of that does still sound like "the original product didn't contain salt of any description but in order to sell this product globally and make more money we have have now added" safe" salt" on muc offs part. Thanks for being persistent and managing to clarify things, Stuart. I wonder if muc off would have volunteered the salt ingredient information had they not been pushed? Things don't always get bigger for the better in my book. Especially in business. There are nearly always corners that get cut and reductions in quality materials. Again, hats off to you Stuart for clearing it up. But even though muc off have come clean(no pun intended!) this revelation won't have done muc offs public relations/advertising a lot of good. No one likes to feel misled or conned.
@marcstephens67555 жыл бұрын
from what I gather is for the global market they had to remove some ingredients due to some market restrictions and the salt was the alternative to comply with the global market and pass all restrictions.

might have to give the product a try as I have used all sorts over 45 years. I did use grez off from Louis motorcycle store and it left white stains on the black engine cases on my explorer and the nice matt finish on the 8 month old T120. Matt finish was ruined so had to polish with autosol so now have shiny cases which I wanted to avoid and been ploishing engine cases for 40+ years on Triumphs

Hi Stuart, thanks a lot! for making this video. I now both have Muc-Off & Silkolene. I wanted to ask your and the community's opinion re the following: I've been enjoying some coastal riding of late and in the Interceptor 650 manual, it says that if you've been riding in salty conditions/coastal areas, to wash the Interceptor with only cold water as washing with warm water can cause a chemical reaction with the salt and damage the motorcycle (p.103 of the Interceptor manual). Would you use Muc-Off/Silkolene with cold water or wash with only cold first then apply the aforementioned products on a second wash? Cheers

So any BMW owner should now go back to their dealer and insist the manufacturer honour the warranty.Citing MUC -OFF's assurances. We are , yet again, the Piggy in the middle, when it comes to manufacturers disallowing warranty claims against them.Not sure which are worse. Insurance companies or Manufacturers.
