It's my understanding that many episodes of this series were originally filmed in colour but never broadcast that way. This may not be colourized, but, rather, is truly in colour.

Even though the gothic tones of the black and white episodes are great , i´ve always thought they should release a full colored version of the series , the make up work was very cool and Fred Gwyne had health issues to portrait Herman because the make up was very demanding , people should see it so the effort would be worthy :)

Well technically, no one can see that makeup work because the series was only shot in black and white. The color in this clip is artificial, so we're not seeing the original colors but an interpretation of them. Still, it's great to see it, and I believe we are only a few years away now before we'll be able to have all the old black and white shows in color thanks to advanced computer processing known as CNN.

It's one of the very few black and white programs that I don't mind viewing it in black and white.Not because we're so used to viewing them in black and white, but rather because there is something about the program that in my opinion, that looks much better in black and white.(such as the I Love Lucy episodes even though I viewed a few in color that were artificially colorized) When I view the Munsters in black and white,What goes through my mind is not that that it was an older program that may have been shot in the 40s or early 50s, but rather because of all the dust, spider webs, and antiques; such as the pipe organ, kitchen, and what they were wearing (just to name a few) though I will admit, when I was a kid, I would wonder what it would look like if it were in color. And then there was a movie that came out that was not an episode which was in color and it was called: "Munsters go home".

This is super! I always wanted to see the older classics in color. I don't think the new colorization method takes away from things (love the colorized first season of Bewitched and I Dream of Jeannie), it opens a door to get kids today interested in the classic TV shows. I love it!!! Thanks!

With some things, black and white can look more authentic than colour. For The Munsters, you couldn't help but be intrigued by seeing just one episode at least in colour. It suited black and white, always has, always will, one would presume, but that's because we're so used to it. Given today's HD technology, now with more vivid colour, most people now tend to dismiss black and white, because we really now want to see everything in HD, and with amazingly vivid detail and colour.

One episode colourised, is that all we're ever going to get? A DVD of this colourised episode was released, along with the black and white version, but let's have more. The technology to do it is something we've had for donkey's years now. The black and white versions will always exist, and it's not a matter of tampering with them, it's just that if the tools are there to colourise the whole lot then why not just do it? I'd love to see the whole series in colour if this sample is anything to go by, and imagine a DVD boxset being released with brand new digitally remastered and colourised versions, they'd sell like hot cakes. It's 2016 for goodness sake, we've seen old black and white movies have colourisation, why not give a classic and vintage show like this a new lease of life it's crying out for.

back in 1964 when the munsters was made the network shot a pilot that never made the air and they shot it in color then CBS did a recast and because it would coast 10,000 more a episode that was going to be aired they chose to film it in back and white ..this episode was shot in black and white and some company made a dvd and colorized them ..I admit they look so much better in color

OK, thanks for the response. I know about the pilot that was made in '64, and the colourised look to it was good. The 15 minute pilot never seemed quite right though, something wasn't as likeable as the black and white episodes. They have the tech now to colourise all those black and whites, you have to wonder why it's never been attempted. Must come down to money.

ELLA HORNBY ok look at it this way ..I am sure you know of the old show the honeymooners ..that was also black and white and some company did offer to colorize the ones they called the classic 39 ..and even tho they would have looked great in color Jackie Gleason didn't want them to be in color he wanted to keep them the way they was made so mite be the same with the Munsters the ones that made them mite not want to tamper with them ..leave the classic's alone I guess ..

Well OK, that's a point that has it's merit. Since this episode was colourised, the demand for further colourisation has been growing because in all fairness, we do get spoilt by it. I would also say the same thing about The Honeymooners as you mentioned, colourisation of that show wouldn't exactly go amiss in this world of digital enhancement and improved colour gamut. Anyway, we'll leave it there for now, but it's a good talking point though.

When I saw this show’s intro when I was 6 on Nick @ Nite back in 1995, it freaked me out, but my parents who grew up in the 60’s said it’s not a scary show it’s a comedy and then I found it to be hilarious! I even told this story to both actresses that played Marylin and they thought it was cute and hilarious.

I will start by saying that if all those old shows, The Munsters, The Addams Family, The Beverley Hillbillies, and plenty more were given complete colourization, visually, they would not seem like just a thing of the past anymore. Just think of it, it would be a stunning reintroduction of these great shows to our screens again, and would probably be watched by many more people. They could do it if they really wanted, I'me absolutely certain of that, because they can do anything now

This is from the episode of The Munsters in which Beverly Owen made her last appearance on the show as Marilyn Munster, Herman & Lily's niece. Then in the next episode, Pat Priest had the role until the series' finale.

Looks better in black in white. :p In the show they say that Herman’s skin is supposed to be green but the actual make up was blue so it makes sense to keep in black and white so you can use your imagination. Besides, colour was expensive back then and it made the show seem more like the old monster movies.

Yes, I would agree with what you've said there, because in black and white it's always worked, hasn't it? It still does to this day, even given today's technology, and we all know the saying, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". The same goes for the other great shows at that time too, but if they were all reintroduced to us in colour, you'd watch them, you would. Even if you thought the colour didn't really suit them, you'd still be amazed at the transformation, that would only be natural.

@masterstarfox Again, regardless of what color the dress appears, all the colors used were muted, or faded. There was not single vibrant dress in the wardrobe for Yvonne to wear as Lily. Lavender is in the purple color family. Lavender, green, slate blue and gray were the shades of her various dresses.

this color clip from "THE MUNSTERS" puts me back to 1986,when Ted Turner started Colorizing many of the Black and White classics. now while there are some who liked this process,others like myself don't feel too inclined to embrace this technique,because Black and White films and TV shows had that quality,where they were ment to be,nothing more,nothing less! THE MUNSTERS was a perfect example of that,since Universal made the series to spoof most of its classic horror films-also BW!

The Addams Family were quacks who didn't grasp that visitors thought they were quacks. Both shows were fish out of water comedies. Nothing to do with horror. So, yeah, blood red doesn't work.
