It was definitely scripted, and the topics were chosen by Geoff and the other planning authorities. They’re WAY too specifically focused on the exact criticisms they get hit hardest with, especially last year. It was a ploy to apologize and pre-empt further criticism, and it worked. Everybody loved it, and Geoff being willing to savagely make fun of himself and the awards was incredible for public perception.

I don't wanna be TOO cynical though, because 1, the jokes were still funny af, and 2, they DID address some of the bigger criticisms people had about last year's GOTY. But stuff like "haha yeah we nominated DLC" is still an obvious attempt at deflecting.

Also stating that he's been playing Elden Ring, and wants to work with Kojima for a game. Gonzo literally last year. Presenting the award for Best Indie Game. And saying that he's been playing a lot of Tears of the Kingdom, getting stuck on the chicken sidequest on purpose. And shared his obsession with chickens in video games. Even seemingly having a pet hen named "Zelda".
