It was insanely one sided propaganda for a violent criminal who gambled and lost. And the creator must be either brave, stupid, or both. Siding with a dead gangster against the still active gang of killers who took his life.... Protesting schoolgirls in Iran. Alexei Navalny in Russia. Women's rights activists in Kabul. They are _truly_ courageous people who deserve our admiration. This guy even raised his son to follow in his violent, barely educated footsteps. Even mobsters send their kids to top schools so they can escape underworld futures.

My good friend, Ian, who always had a warm welcome and a smile for me anytime we met, is never far from my thoughts. We worked together in the shipyard, and we often talked of his love for his family, community, and, of course, his much spoilt dogs. I used to have the honour of driving him home after a 12 hour night shift at Harland and Wolff. I'll never forget his crazy jokes and his farewell as he got out of my car... " I'll see you later Mr Morton". I wish I was seeing him later. A better man you could not meet anywhere and I think myself very privileged that he considered me a true friend. I miss you dearly, Big O. East Belfast isn't the same without you.

Listen any body with a brain will tell you that loyalists are seen as one if not the the stupidest people to have ever lived we really just laugh at them run by Mi5 to keep a divide in North of Ireland it’s all about divide and conquer but loyalty to the crown is what trick is used. They are just there too keep fear the security forces could shut them down in a heart beat. I’m a catholic and I have a friend in England who is x army when he visited here a few times he says to me what they hell do these idiots do are the serious there not even British it really is that simple, but for loyalty to a crown that fucked them Over board along time ago is a good tool for there global agendas. I am a Catholic who grew up in a basically Loyalist area at the time . Around the 12th and at special occasions of orange marches many Catholics were picked on including myself. It was usually Unionists and Protestants who claimed no political affiliation who attacked us not the Loyalists. It was Loyalists who protected some of us including myself . I remember a couple of the lads walking me home at night if bad things were happening in the area and making sure that the sectarian wolves at the door were warned to leave us alone as we were just children. Later on when these men started to die off i made a point of attending their funerals because i owed them that respect for looking after me when no one else did . Neither side liked it but by then i was a grown man myself and i didn't give two hoots what either side thought. I did ask their families if it was all right that i attend as a mark of respect and they were quite agreeable with it if i wanted to. Some strange alliances and aid from people whom one would have thought would have been doing the terrorising but it wasn't the Loyalists i can tell you that. Couldn't have cared more about those men if they had have been my family members . I will never forget them and will always respect them for protecting me and other Catholic kids in the area .

I knew Ian personally and am familiar with most of the individuals in this story. Today the UVF isn’t recognisable with the organisation it once was and the established and experienced older members have left the stage. The younger generation of members and associates now dominate and are almost exclusively ceasefire soldiers who played little or no role in the Ulster conflict. These guys largely have no interest in community or cause and their aims are self serving through drugs, mob mentality and the perceived hard man status. There are some absolutely upstanding and well respected guys in the UVF in East Belfast especially away from the lower Newtownards Road crew. But unfortunately they are hamstrung by the overwhelming power and threat of violent reprisal by Mackers and his men. You’re talking about a force of hundreds of men at his disposal, well armed and now major players in the European drugs trade. Hopefully someday this group is brought down as it definitely does not have the best interests of East Belfast at heart.

Great video! It’s strange how communities had real strength and purpose back in the 60’s and 70’s which truly benefitted local people. You see it on this video and what it has become very similar to the American Bloods and Crips who use to stand up for their community and provide jobs for the locals. Now it’s a cesspit for violence and narcotics and is now a burden on the communities.

Bloods and Crips I lived amongst them and you are young and dreaming, they sucked the last dime outa there own people. and honest folk feared them, as for the 60s and 70s that’s before PIRA held sway and people had guns and men to fight back. Look how that ended with the GFA and aren’t yea blessed because the brits knew they couldn’t be beaten. The fourth green field will know peace when the scum who murderd IAN and there kind on both sides who never went barrel to barrel in the bad old days are gone. At lest the paramilitaries on both sides who knew true action fought for a cause. Now like bloods and crips they kill to save face.

@@patkearney9320 my great grandmother (Irish) lived in America in that era and she said the only group that had it worse than her were the blacks there and she said they were actually lovely in the 60’s and early 70’s and the young lads would sometimes buy groceries and hand out to the wider community (including to herself). Perhaps your perception of them was due to unfair stereotypes back then but they have certainly evolved into monsters of the communities we know them as today (Bloods and Crips). Given their circumstances being completely passive never worked given the treatment they received from the very start of their American journey so from a firsthand account from my grandmother who saw both struggles from both sides of the pond I respectfully disagree with your statement based on her direct account. The same way I have disagreed with Brits who believe Ireland and Northern Ireland were filled with nothing but troublemakers when in actual fact their circumstances couldn’t allow them to just be completely passive about things. The paramilitaries fought for a true cause and died for what they truly believed in with discipline, fortitude and family expansion and for their futures.

@@acediamond7524 I think your remembering the early years of the black panthers, they opened schools drug addiction centre ( when never heard of) and food kitchens and much more they had armed men patrolling there areas. The Government went to war with them locking up the manhood and woman folk who held revolutionary beliefs and killing the leaders. A lot like you say is true they protected the people and education was big with them. Yet in the 80s I heard and seen proof of the crips and bloods going to war to own a corner killing black more than whites. They are hated by decent folk they do no good works but you are correct to say we have much in common with there situation . You speak truly with no disrespect to others and much is true but them two groups done nothing for their people I ever heard or seen. The black panthers done everything you say. You come across as a truthful person and I wish you well all you say about the North ot Ireland is true and certain groups did protect the people on both sides when governments left and watched us kill each other. Just to be clear the UVF pre dated the PIRA and so could not be formed to combat the PIRA. Secondly neither the UVF or the UDA were especially keen on engaging in direct combat with the PIRA but preferred random attacks on Nationalist / RC civilians unless provided with weapons, intel and instructions from their Special Branch or Military Intelligence handlers.

You're going down the Sinn Fein line of trying to sanitise IRA atrocities. First fact, the IRA murdered 1696 people. That's over twice as many as loyalists and five times more than the security forces. Secondly the IRA were also involved in random sectarian killings such as Kingsmills, Teebane, Darkley mission hall, Tullyvalen, Enniskillen poppy day, La Mon, Shankill fish shop. They also killed many people whilst bombing Belfast and regional towns. In Co Fermanagh 90% of murder victims were Protestants. Similarly in West Tyrone where protestant farmers were targeted. In fact the IRA also killed more Catholics than the combined security forces. Many were tortured and blamed for being informers. There is no excuse for murder on either side, but you don't get off with making the IRA out as anything other than cold blooded terrorists supported by widespread organised crime. For all the talk of collusion not many have been convicted despite the all out efforts of Republican lawyers.

I hear an American talking about Unionist politics, I assume it's going to be a completely uneducated and biased take on how evil 'england' is and how the poor irish catholics are living as slaves, and the IRA are heroes for bombing kids. But this was actually fairly well researched and showed some understanding and nuance, despite an obvious bias and some misunderstanding. So thank you for that, my bar is very low, but I was pleasantly surprised.

@michaelhuges3302 , No Michael this is not a Celtic cross, but rather the emblem which was adopted for the Northern Ireland football team, who while having , sometimes a majority of Catholics playing, are followed almost exclusively by unionist/ loyalists. While , that catholics play might sound like a positive thing , if as has happened previously those players have links to say , prominent Irish orientated teams , such as Glasgow Celtic , they will be hounded out where possible and have on occasion been attacked even on the field of play or had bombs at their family homes ,( Neil Lennon) among others. No , but I digress , any similarity is merely a form of plagerism, or as with the red hand of Ulster , a corruption of ancient Irish symbolism. Similarly many very old tunes which can be heard from loyalist bands were once indeed the pride of Jacobite clans ,pre the Highland clearances. Little if anything in these people's repotoire is original. Being as they are primarily descendants of 'Reviers' evicted from the Scottish border region for rustling and criminality and exiled by James I and VI in 1603-10. Check for yourself, these people and their toxic propensity for villainy goes back centuries. Good day Sir.

@@jamesoneill2933If I might, I've got a story for you. I was born in Belfast in early 1973. My father was born in Coalisland and my mother Newry. His family being particularly active in the civil rights movement. They moved to Belfast as my Dad was in the car business and my Mom a nurse. Considering his limited background, being one of twelve children they did quite well for themselves. Eventually settling into a house on a quiet street far enough away from the troubles in many neighborhoods. I've grown up knowing that that peace and quiet would not last. The secret to my father's moderate success was this, he always remembered that everyone's money was the same colour. And he did business with everyone. Some folks, you can imagine who didn't like the idea of a young Catholic man having success in Belfast at that point in time. They burned his business to the ground. Being the only Catholic family on the street the neighbors had a meeting, the topic to be discussed was this... tell my parents to leave. One of the neighbors was an RUC man. Despite having lived peacefully amongst their neighbors, and even with the support of some. They were told, it would be better for everyone if you left. And so they did, to Dublin where we lived until 1981 before immigrating to Canada when I was 8 years old, my sister 7. But that's the story I heard growing up. Last year, my dear old Dad told his now 50 year old son just how bad things got. He advertised a car for sale in the Telegraph, early 1975 as he had done numerous times before. A couple of days later, shortly after supper time a knock came on the front door. My Dad opened the door to find a man standing there. He noticed another man standing at the end of the driveway and yet another behind the wheel of their car. The man proceeded to inquire about the car for sale. It was parked in the driveway. Did he want to look it over? Take it for a drive? No he says, that's alright. He hands my Dad 10 quid deposit and says he'll be back with the rest to pick it up tomorrow. He never shows up. At what point my father realized what had happened, I don't know. But he made this quite clear, they were here for him not the car. The only thing that stopped them.... He was carrying his baby boy in his arms when he opened the door. Me. Now I don't know what's worse, the fact that he was so close to having unspeakable things done to him, or that it took him 48 years to tell me this. To this very day, I live across town from my Da and Mom and still enjoy their companionship. I am a lucky man.
