@@Right_Said_Brett kind of is logic in it. One miscalculation and you die in an airplane. Crashes are usually catastrophic. Not so with a cab, bus, etc.
@Right_Said_Brett
@Right_Said_Brett Жыл бұрын
@@chloedesousa957 It's still illogical because safety standards for aircraft and pilots is vastly greater than it is for motor vehicles and drivers. Your odds of being in an accident during a flight is 1 in 1.2 million and the chances of that accident being fatal are 1 in 11 million. Whereas your chances of being in a motor car crash are 1 out of 366 for every 1,000 miles traveled and the odds of dying in a car crash as a driver are 1 in 114, and 1 in 654 as a passenger. You are MUCH more likely to die in a car crash, than you are a plane crash. There's a reason why every fatal plane crash makes the news, whereas fatal car crashes aren't reported on. It's because the latter is an everyday occurrence, whilst the former is exceptionally rare.

I also never thought of taking anyone with me, but I understand his motivations. I mean, you are going to die anyway, you don't care about the world or others, and you couldn't give a damn how they will remember you. I blame the doctors and the system, that enabled him to go on a shopping spree for meds. Not one of those dozens of doctors were able to help him, and I know how that must feel, bc I myself have been ill for more than 19 years now and nothing's changing, as no one believes me that this is a skin problem, not a psychological one. But no, no one believes me and think I'm crazy, they just said I suffer from body dismorphic disorder and that's it, categorized as one, always one. He was selfish, but people with depression are usually selfish, most of the time not on purpose, it's the mental illness that makes them focus on themselves too much. That's why he really didn't care about anyone else, he wanted to die, he accomplished that. The thing is, people like us don't care how we will be remembered, neither did he. Crashing a plane with people or without, what's the difference? That's how most of the depressed think, but they won't tell you. He took the least painful option to die, and that's what mattered to him. I myself would also choose the least painful death available to me, with people or not, I'll be gone anyway. Since I don't feel suicidal most of the time, rather depressed, I have developed deep sympathy for other people, yet also deep hatred for them as well. Weird, isn't it? I'm just so tired of my illness... One day I feel deep sympathy for someone in a video, next time I wish more people died. I wasn't like that just a few years ago. The toxicity that is the social media taught me that.

As someone who's struggled with a whole host of mental health issues, I still find no sympathy for Lubitz. Most of us who struggled with whether to live in this world couldn't even do it, out of knowing the pain it would cause others. Only a monster could not only cause that pain to all their own loved ones, but also take so many others away from their respective families as well, giving them an unimaginably terrifying death. The amount of pain he caused is just an unfathomable evil. Then there's the madness of allowing someone like that to have a flight career in the first place. The system failed so shockingly.

I agree to a certain degree. What he did was beyond evil & unforgivable. To blame the employers is unreasonable. He didn’t have these mental health issues from the get go. As time went on he began to get severe symptoms, and he even got better & stayed that way for YEARS. The only time the employers were in the wrong was when they allowed him to pull out the records that he had depression. They should’ve made sure by making it mandatory he see a psychiatrist. Everyone is capable of getting depressed at any and every age. Even I got diagnosed with severe depression/anxiety & I never ever would’ve imagined that. To say someone with depression shouldn’t be employed is a bit insensitive (in my opinion)

Indeed, The system failed to completely…. Especially Lufthansa, as for them, there is nothing I can do for that race of Nazi bastards…. But do the rest of us need to suffer on account of their insanity? Never ever ever shit someone that has any kind of self-destructive or outwardly destructive mental health problems be allowed to become someone with whom the lives of many are entrusted. I don’t trust airlines, because they continue to allow idiot pilots To fly airplanes, and we have a long history of suicidal and maniacal pilots killing everyone. I’m a pilot myself. So I’m not picking on anyone out of some kind of Envy or something… But I’m also an engineer. I know a lot about what automated systems can do, and flying an airplane to simple!! Automation for aircraft has been fully available for more than half a century, closing in on 3/4 of a century there is no reason ever have a pilot flying commercial aircraft ever again. And then there is the medical system. What a goddamn disaster! An airline pilot medical records should be publicly available, not kept secret, and just because our lives depend on their physical and mental well-being. I’m not gonna fly as a passenger with a pilot who has a history of mental illness and suicidal thoughts. And no one else would either. We need daylight shined onto the condition of individuals that have high responsibility for the life of others. But mainly what we need is to get them out of those positions completely. Computers don’t have depression! And if you know anything about computers and control system it is highly unlikely that computer can be evil-handed programmed for malfeasance. This is because the systems that are used both hardware and software do not allow one program to completely take over. In other words there are what are called watchdog computers” as well as other redundancies and precautions

This is a case close to my heart seeing it is the aircraft I was trained on and having suffered with depression and suicidal thoughts myself too. During the time of this case, I was cabin crew on an Airbus A320, whilst I was based in the UK and nowhere near Germany, a lot changed overnight in the airline industry worldwide following this. In our airline (having served the same airline for 13 years I am unable to comment on other airlines) no pilot was allowed to be alone in the flight deck and at least 2 people had to be in there at any time, 1 pilot and 1 crew member at the very least. We would often discuss it during pre-flight briefings, and would always be in the back of our minds. Only a couple of years later I suffered from severe chronic postnatal depression and suicidal thoughts, I was immediately grounded following me telling my manager I'd tried to take my own life.. I was in the progress of getting better, but wasn't allowed back until I'd been seen by a counselor, for which there is a very long waiting list in the UK 😔 the company unfortunately went into administration and I never flew again.. I would never be able to harm others whilst taking my own life, but completely understood why they wouldn't let me fly whilst under the DRs for my depression... It is extremely selfish and sad what he did. 😔😔😔

People always mentions suicidal people being in good spirits as a reason for why suicide was a surprise, but its actually seen as a redflag among mental health professionals, suddenly being upbeat and seemingly quick uplifting of mood can often be down to am individual finally resigning themselves to the the decision to end their life, and experiencing alleviation in the their distress as a result. If you have a suicidal loved one and they suddenly seem "better" over night, don't assume they are safe, mental health conditions don't go away over night.

Being German, I remember this unbelievably tragic incident very well. Naturally I've seen tons of news coverage and documentaries about it. However, your video is clearly among the best summaries (if not *the* best), since-besides structuring the plethora of information flawlessly and easy to digest-you're really focussing on the human side of the story. Not only Andreas' background, but also other people's involved. For instance, I've never learned anything about the actual pilot before. I have to admit, it was a punch to the gut looking at this young dad's extraordinarily likeable picture. On the other hand, I've always wondered who this man was, who tried everything in his power to save the situation. Andreas tricked him out of being able to fulfil his responsibilities as the captain. I can't imagine how he must have felt during the last minutes before his death. It still makes my stomach turn. Thank you for honouring him. Also, I really appreciate you taking some time to talk about mental illness. Being just a couple of years older, I can relate to a lot of what Andreas apparently went through. Having loving parents, but still being crushed by the pressure to perform, is harder than it seems at first glance. Germany's middle and upper class parents of that particular generation, who thrived greatly during the 70s and 80s, building incredible things-sometimes even without a whole lot of education-are extremely intimidating and seem impossible to live up to. Not unlike in Japanese culture, we still have remnants of that strict emphasis on discipline, achievement, and self-sacrifice from our Prussian ancestors. At least in my parent's generation and their way of raising us, this was still very present. It's a perfect hotbed for anxiety and self-doubt. Especially when your parents aren't tyrannic a-holes, since that leaves only yourself to hate and question constantly. Another thing I wasn't aware of, is, how much medication Andreas actually received and that he was on the verge to psychosis. Without wanting to relieve him of any responsibility, I still think there's a lot to fix in the German health system in general, and in the knowledge about mental illness in particular. There are too many gaping holes there, and I don't think we know the least bit about what psychotropics actually do to the human brain. Or worse: we don't care. In fact, I knew two people who took their lives after being treated heavily with medication (in really horrific ways, I might add). Both went from depression and anxiety to full-on schizophrenia and psychosis in a very short period of time. And once you're there, you just don't have control over your actions anymore. It's absolutely gut-wrenching. Medical professionals need to be a lot more careful with these things, and there has to be some kind of information network, so that patients (like Andreas) can't just visit X different doctors and get X different prescriptions, no questions asked. Unfortunately, Germany is so sensitive when it comes to data protection, that other essential topics (such as patient information) are always treated secondary. Lots to say about this case and your outstanding coverage, but I leave it at that. Thanks so much for your admirable work. You're helping to understand cases like this a lot better. "It is impossible to pay adequate tribute to the innocent lives lost that day." You did it nonetheless.

I'm from Germany too and remember the date as it was yesterday.. the shock and horror, despite not knowing anyone aboard the plane. 2 years later I flew to Spain myself for a month and the route was almost the same, although the destination was Malaga, not Barcelona, but I could not stop thinking about that plane... the German channel WDR put up 2 documentaries about the families of the deceased and how they are today. I can really recommend them. And my heart goes out to them. ♡♡ I cannot comprehend why Lubitz was that... selfish and decided to take everyone on that plane with him, despite having had other options of committing suicide. Suffering from depression or not.. this is no excuse to act in such a way... and I despise him for it, in all honesty...

Thank you Adrian for the research and the hours of gathering up real and true information about this terrible crash. I have actually seen the television program that went into why it happened. THis man's terrible vanity and selfishness cost 149 innocent people their lives, and all because he didn't want to lose his pilots licence because of how much it had cost him to get. He didn't care about who else got hurt into the bargain, he only cared about his own selfish needs. When people are working in such jobs that can cost someone their life, there should be more checks done on their psych and the doctors should be able to tell an employer that this person is not suitable at this time for this role. I know that we all want our information about ourselves kept confidential, but in cases like this it could have saved oh so many lives. My hearts and prayers go out to the families and friends that all lost someone to this selfish act.

They were in mental agony, that’s pain and can be as bad as physical bad when it’s extreme. The murderer would of known that. The company didn’t have access to his declining mental state. So they are not completely at fault with preventing the guy. So the best option they had was to fire him as soon as he was listed as depressed. This would of prevented the event. But that leaves a dilemma, should companies fire their employees if they decline in mental health ? How bad is bad when the employee is no longer a person who can handle the job and it affects the safety of the public?

This case was a tragic example of lessons not learned... As just a year and 5 months before this tragedy, a Mozambican passenger jet, LAM Flight 470, crashed in Bwabwata National Park whilst operating a flight from Maputo to Luanda in Angola. Investigations revealed that it was the captain of that flight (having gone through a divorce settlement, surgery of his daughter and worse still, his son killing himself.), suffering from depression, locked the FO of the flight out, and also programmed the Embraer 190 to fly into the ground.

While you are correct and I agree with everything you said, there was more to it than being suicidal. If it was solely about ending his own life, he could have done that the day before while flying the (almost) empty plane. Instead, intentionally he used that flight as a test run to make sure his plan would work, with the obvious intention of doing that with a full plane at a later point. That is clear homicidal intent, not just suicidal intent. This was premeditated mass murder.
@Semmelein

Calling someone selfish that is severely struggling with mental health just adds to the problem. If this guy really "knew" don't you think he would have acted accordingly? But he couldn't because he was ill. I do not want to give an excuse here because what he did was unexcusable. Please do understand though that judging him by what you think a normal person would do is not helping.

@@Semmelein He made a very calculated choice. There are plenty of people in his exact situation who acknowledge their problems and accept the need for professional help and choose to get treated. He went the opposite way with it. He earned every bit of any judgement he gets. He could have chosen to be his only victim. He premeditatedly chose mass murder, instead. @@--_--IMP--_-- That's not what I wanted to say at all. I'm not telling anyone to have sympathy just that the stance that this is just selfish completely misrepresents the problem at hand. How often were we in a situation where we didn't acknowledge the situation, or our problems and didn't accept the need for help? Now take that and multiply it by 100. So yes, his choice may be completely calculated. But it was not sane. That's the part we all need to understand. As long as we're just blaming this on his decision we miss the opportunity to improve mental health in the society as a whole - probably even hurting us. That's all I'm saying - no matter if you have sympathy or not.

Sadly he had these thoughts for a long while. In the moment when you decide to do the final part you don't think about other people involved. Like the people jumping in front of a train who don't think about the traindrivers or passengers inside, Lubitz thought something like now or never and didn't think about anybody else. The good thing is psychological disease is more discussed now and pilots are not allowed to be alone in the cockpit anymore. It all makes sense when he finds peace at the coffee lounge before that flight. He’s no longer trapped.
