Erich Zann is a stand-in for the most embarrassing and maddened occurrences of which H.P. himself caused; A story to portray his own starings into that abyss that maddening men see, that twists them off the edge. To portray how he wrote and rambled into that dark abyss in a fearful attempt to make it stop, but it only mocked him.

I also wonder if the narrator managed to retrieve any of his belongings before he left the Rue d'Auseil, never to return. Let's get that story, of fleeing your house in a panic and then having to survive penniless and possessionless in Paris while struggling to regain your lost Sanity points.
