Isn’t it amazing to realise that the band wrote, arranged, recorded and performed Trespass, Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, Selling England and The Lamb before any of the members turned 25?! And to pull it off live in a way like this…unbelievable.

Wow that is an amazing fact. And they were all brilliant at their instruments. I know that there are still many young and brilliant musicians but what there isn't now is an organized industry that wants to sign them to a recording contract and nurture them. Instead the entire industry now just seems to use people for a song if they have come up with one and then spit them out and look for the next one. I'm happy that this special band and song was recorded for all of us to enjoy nearly 50 years later!

Steve actually hit the strings with the edge of the pick, not his index finger. But, as others have said, the idea had been around for years; EVH just took it to a different level. In a hilarious coincidence, Van Halen was actually calling themselves Genesis in 1972, but gave up on the name because one of them saw a copy of either Foxtrot or Selling England by the Pound in a record shop.

@@briane5706 Not mimed but I believe there may have been a couple of takes. Notice Hackett breaks a string towards the beginningbut at 4:44 the string is repaired and right before the downbeat you notice Tony waiting for the cue to stop. I wonder if Hackett was unable to play the latter half of the instrumental wihtout that string.

People at the time - and even today - have accused Gabriel-era Genesis of taking themselves too seriously … but I’ll always prefer a self-serious artist a million times over someone just phoning it in. It’s undeniable how entrancing this performance is, and how magnetic both Gabriel and Genesis are in their presence. People could learn a lot from this period of rock music, especially in terms of discarding all apprehension and just swinging for the fences!!

Funnily enough, nobody ever chastised film makers for being too serious while making drama movies or writers for being too serious but when it comes to music, you are suddenly supposed to create with tongue in cheek. Strange - I'm not looking for a chuckle when listening to progressive rock masterpieces, I want to lose myself in the music... music that came about due to being seriously committed.

It'll always grind my gears when I hear criticism directed at rock artists who inject a little maturity and seriousness into their work. Such remarks reek of elitist condescension toward the genre! God forbid musicians in an ostensibly puerile musical genre like rock have the pretension to challenge the emotions and intellect of the "simple-minded" consumer; just keep feeding them the doggerel head-bangers they are deserving of!
