In the northern regions of Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia you can find pearl mussels in the rivers. Research scientist Paul Eric Aspholm, Bioforsk, tells more about it in this movie. Aspholm is working in a project funded by the Fram Centre.

Keep in mind they filter the water and are very important. So don't go cracking them all open. In some areas they are endangered.

Are the pearl mussels in that particular stream reproducing ? I ve seen finnish studies where pH, Fe and Al affects thee survival rate of the larvae . But as in my area of sweden there is only a few places were we have fertile females and if the female doesnt even get fertile its even worse.

@@nicolemilman1795 Theese look a like habitats do we only have in the far northwestern parts of sweden and mostly in the mountains. There are only few rivers where thoose types of birch trees can be found together with trout and salmon . They need to travel far distances from the baltic sea to spawn in thoose type of habitats situated in the west of Sweden . It is propably filmed in Norway... And if so that would explain why there are so much algae on the stream bottom since the norwegians use a lot of fertilizers deriving from farmland close to the rivers. In Sweden we have silt and stained water with low pH because of our forest industry have polluted most of our lowland streams were most of our seatrout and salmon thrives. And Swedish streams in the hills of the northwest are less polluted than the Norwegian counterparts since there are less people in thoose swedish hills.... But this is a wild guess from a fisherman that has spent a lot of time in both countries...

@@maxjarno7814 thank you kindly for the explanation and information. It seems I have mistaken Swedish for Norwegian 😕 As for the Nordic languages, I only have knowledge of Finnish as my mother is a Finn.
