I have distant Jewish ancestry via my maternal grandfather , my maternal grandmother was mostly American Indian and Scottish with a little bit of French. even with that little bit of Jewish ancestry, it's from Iraq, Spain, and Russia , and they all met in Ireland for some reason. I know that I have the name Cohen in my heritage. You are dead right about the "who is a Jew?" question being complicated though. I remember talking to a guy when I was in college, wearing a star of David necklace , and I asked him if he was Jewish. He said that his religion is not Jewish, he's Christian, but that he is of Jewish Heritage. And I find stuff like that fascinating, because Christianity is not an ethno-religious religion, but Judaism is usually considered to be one. Paul said he was a Jew even after his conversion to Christianity, so, there's that. And different groups of Jews trace it differently. I know from my Indian Heritage, a lot of tribes use the maternal Heritage, you're considered a member of your mother's tribe, but that's not always true. I know some groups of Jews say that if your mother is Jewish than you're Jewish, but the problem with that is, how does that work for the Jewish priesthood which is based on descent? You know, Jewish people makeup a relatively small proportion of the world population, but my goodness, are they historically important. I don't know what I'm trying to say.

It seems to me, from my reading of the Old Testament, even Ancient Israel was a genetically mixed group, being that there was a mixed multitude which left Egypt, and then throughout their history they intermarried with people form the Canaanite tribes and others around them. In addition to that, Abraham was basically just another guy from the general area, such that the Israelites only became genetically distinct by making themselves a somewhat limited gene pool by culture and religion, though I think that during the sojourns through Europe and elsewhere, there has still been intermarriage with Europeans, at least some. Of course, the whole process of how the human race becomes these distinct racial groups with its identifiable traits and DNA is an interesting discussion, though it freaks some people out.

The Pashtuns and Pathars of Northern Iran have always claimed to be the sons of Israel. They also identify as different tribes according to the 12 sons of the patriarch Jacob. The Pathars and Pashtuns are the remnant of those who remained in the land of Assyrian deportation. Once we map the male Y haplogroups for the various Pathar and Pashtuns tribes, the 10 lost tribes can eàsily be found through DNA testing.

Yahweh said that only 10% of all Israelites would remain in the land. Most of Judah were also deported by the Assyrians as well - only Jerusalem and its close inhabitants were spared. So the so called "Lost Tribes" include all 12 Tribes of Israel. The Judah inhabitants of Jerusalem were later taken captive to Babylon for seventy years before they actually returned. Only 10% of the Northern Kingdom and also 10% of the Southern Kingdom would remain in the land until the time of Christ.

Nineveh was one of the most important cities in the Assyrian empire and at parts functioned as the capital. After the babylonians conquered it it went into rapid decline. The book of Jonah is set when Nineveh was still Assyrian.
