The Mysterons could regenerate at will,i don`t even know why they were so pissed off at a minor inconvenience that took a few minutes to rectify.Having said that,if things had gone well we would never have had this classic show,i still love every second of it.

All the Mysterons needed to have done was to tell the Martian exploration crew that they meant no harm when using the monitoring equipment to observe them closer, which the crew mistook for weapons against them. This way the crew would have proceeded further into the complex & formed an alliance of friendship between both civilisations. Before joining Spectrum Conrad Turner, who was Captain Black worked for the World Space Patrol, piloting Fireball XL3 in 'Fireball XL5'. This made him a natural choice to lead the Martian expedition.

I think that’s the point. Wars happen because of misunderstandings and miscommunications. While GA shows has a more positive sci-fi outlook on humanity’s contact with extraterrestrials, Captain Scarlet looks at it in a darker manner aka how humanity would actually react to the first contact of alien lifeforms. Panic and shoot first at the initial perceived threat from the alien lifeforms before common sense is able to stop them from lighting a fire in the process.

I've always thought that Captain Black had an actual Mysteron in him, and wasn't a reconstruction. The actual Black was dead, but an actual Mysteron, voice and all, was in his body. His body deteriorates because of this, and that's why he's physically damaged.

When I used to watch this when I was much younger, I used to think that there never was an actual Captain Black in Spectrum and was specifically made by the Mysterons just to mock Spectrum. Of course I know what really happened, but it was an interesting idea.

They had the wire problems mostly fixed by then,they learned a lot since Torchy and co and cut down the illusive walking problems using conveyer belts etc,but you`re right back then it was broadcast in 405 lines so not much clarity and that was when colour TV(625 lines) was just becoming affordable,but the ingenuity of these shows far exceeded anything on TV so i could easilly forgive a few strings.

The rings are used to send details of the person/object to be duplicated to Mars.The Mysterons control the reconstruction with a control signal. When the reconstruction fails in it's mission, the Mysterons turn off the control signal. I have the series on DVD and 2 novels. I also have episodes on audio tape.

What was the purpose of Spectrum before Captain Black fouled up so spectacularly on the Mars mission? Did the guys just hang around Cloudbase flirting with the Angels? I think we should be told.

I think they’d be like a less morally challenged version of the CIA where they get the top secret assignments and field work considered high level for any regular agents to take on, given that their agents consists of the best of the best from whatever agency they had hailed from prior to getting inducted into Spectrum. They’re more or less Marvel’s Shield in terms of how high up they are in the governmental food chain and what other agencies on Earth has access to a sky fortress like Spectrum’s Cloudbase 9?

you forgotten that Captain scarlet is a mysteron the original Captain scarlet in the first episode was killed and replaced but the mysterons lost control of that agent that's why Captain scarlet is indestructible. I think captain black was in love with sympathy angel that's why he spared her. I was disappointed in the ending of the TV series

Fairly certain that had already been done in scifi prior to Star Trek, albeit in a more primitive fashion. The reason that Trek did it was simple, it was a way of getting people off the ship and onto another ship, or planet, without the faff and expense of shooting docking or shuttle landing sequences all the time.

Is Captain Black a reanimated corpse or just possessed? Were the Mysterons alive when their base was attacked or already replicas? Why is Scarlet indestructible but not the other replicas?

1. Re-animated; he can take damage and perform physical feats that would kill a human. That is not mentioned here. 2. Dead, or long departed. The "Mysteron" presence is clearly one of AI only. They may have originally been programmed with the intelligences, values and memories of actual, organic Mysterons, however, making the difference between the two not worth worrying about. Expecting aliens -- or their machine servants -- to follow human logic or tactics is pointless. Of course they will occasionally do things that to us seem random, but make perfect sense to them (who can see their entire plan, whereas SPECTRUM cannot). Making them AI is also better from a dramatic perspective, since AI cannot be bribed or appealed to on sentimental grounds, and knows no fear; non-organic beings are also more resistant to various sorts of attacks, such as gas or acid. Finally, since an AI threat doesn't require the physical space for movement, the oxygen, feeding and waste removal systems, sleeping quarters, etc., that living creatures do, it can pack all its might and resources into quite a compact space; that rather modet Mysteron "complex" -- only a few hundred meters across -- likely hosted the computing and weapons power of a major city on Earth. 3. Scarlet, like Black, was intended to be a "long-term" agent who would require special abilities to carry out a series of missions; neither is an expendable one-shot like the others. Apparently it takes the Mysterons a significant effort to create, monitor, and manage such an agent, or they'd be doing it with everyone they kill. FYI, "Mysterons" is not even the proper name of this foe; COL White says in Ep. 1 that Earth faces a new enemy "that WE SHALL CALL the Mysterons."

White's statement in his briefing suggests that in order to tell the story, "Mysterons" has been substituted for the real (possibly classified) name of the Martian foe wherever it appears. Remember, everyone on the MEV was either killed or Mysteronized, so the use of "Mysterons" in that instance can't be independently verified.

@@pcarrierorange Awwww. So the series of the show was suppose to have 36 episodes? But instead we were given 32 (The Inquisition was the 32nd and last episode)? That's not fair! Why cancel it? We were only 4 episodes away to end the war and get Captain Black! If I ever won the lottery, I'd bring those last 4 episodes back, or film them. I've got a deep voice to play as The Mysterons and Captain Black. I just wish there was someway, anyway, for Century 21 to bring those last 4 episodes back and end the show the way it should be, if they still have the puppets, vehicles and film equipment.

@@johnwilkins275 Ah, sadly not, I guessed 36 knowing it was thirty-something. The first season would always have 32 episodes. Near the end of production on the episodes Anderson was already considering future projects, because Thunderbirds had been cancelled 6 episodes into its second season and he expected the same treatment. So, the show wasn’t renewed for a second season. Inquisition being the last episode was a scheduling error I believe; Attack on Cloudbase was supposed to be the actual last episode.

@@pcarrierorange. I always thought it was all one big season. But again, I wish we could bring Captain Scarlet back. Wouldn't you want that too? Speaking of The Attack On Cloudbase, since Colonel White and Captain Blue were the last ones alive before Symphony Angel (Captain Blue's girlfriend) woke up, if I can use my imagination (part of my autism) on such an epic ending, but also a sad loss, what would I do as both director and writer? I'd say, Spectrum finally gets Captain Black, but not before he shots Captain Blue in front of poor Symphony's heartbreaking eyes. After Captain Blue's death, Captain Scarlet sends a message to The Mysterons that they are the ones who will pay and his best friend, Captain Blue, A.K.A, Adam Svenson will be avenged. After the message, he goes to Mars alone in a Zero X vehicle, shut down the reconstruction device and destroys the Mysteron Complex, ending the war. To wrap up the final episode of the season, Symphony looks down at Captain Blue's grave, while she's hugging his Spectrum Cap. Although Captain Blue my personal favourite Captain Scarlet character, that's what my imagination can think of, to film something epic.

Permanent deaths of the main cast is something I always like in media, although Captain Scarlet is already pretty good at that, killing off several Spectrum officers throughout the season.

No, the indestructible Scarlet is a copy of the original human but my theory is the impact of the fall from the Car-Vu 'defaulted' his personality back to the human. He was one of the first two retro-metabalised people, so it makes sense (kinda) that he might have been faulty!

I remember watching a few episodes before the show was cancelled here and since then picked up on things via YT and websites. It seems the Mysterons might have been AI programs running the complex. Their behavior resembles children and with goal directed programming won’t change their chosen action. They are limited in the ability to influence large number of objects and seem to need some nearby “beacons” similar to our avatars in games. Electrical interference is a problem for them suggesting emf contact. I don’t know if this will work but an EMP bomb near them on Mars could take them out. Getting it near them secretly is a problem.

Mysteron agents don't require the long period of training and preparation human spies do. They can be remotely "programmed" (tasked), and their destruction is at no cost to Mysteron society or resources. The only thing preventing the Mysterons from overwhelming the Earth defense is the fact that the Mysterons seem to be able to maintain and direct only a handful of agents at one time; there are not dozens or hundreds of Mysteron "sleeper" agents waiting to be activated. Rather, they are activated on a "just-in-time" basis. Their plans, likewise, are rolled out one-by-one and not simultaneously.

Am I wrong on this, not having watched the series for quite a few years but I seem to recall that every time the Spectrum personel talk about Captain Scarlet, they do so as if they think Scarlet is just the original who somehow ended up 'free' from Mysteron control. Whereas in fact he's not the original, he's a copy, the original being clearly long dead (his dead man boots being in shot during the copy's reconstruction). Spectrum never seem to think this though, despite being aware other 'agent's are reconstructions...really odd, hmmm

In the first episode, Scarlet falls from the London Car-View tower complex. His body is recovered. In Spectrum custody, Scarlet’s wounds heal themselves via retrometabolisation, and he regains consciousness apparently no longer under Mysteron control but retaining the healing factor. This being a great asset to Spectrum, the Mysterons ensure the rest of their copies stay dead.

It's my recollection that from that point onwards throughout the series (after the Car-View inceident), Specturm seem to think the recovered Scarlet is the original and never seem to talk about him in a way that means they understand he's actually a copy, the original being long dead.

Netflix should make a new 2021 series of this classic, and I do not hope for a remake of what the film did to the Hitch hikers guide to the Galaxy, but a Battlestar galactica like remake of a series would be great as I personally thought that was brilliant remake and the gender character substitutions was great casting, showing you can go woke in a now PC world and enjoy a series, whoops me showing eye candy wins every time as I prefer to watch and listen to people that are nice inside or out, Doctor who was a classic example of a bad gender change and should have used British actress Dawn French as she is great. Let's hope they do not gender change the Angels because of my comments.
