The amount of mythology and culture behind Netflix's Maya and the three is astounding and there was no way I could fit it all into one video yet here I am trying my best

Heyy so my first yt video on this channel was drawing Quetzalcoatl, and I was wondering if we could do a collab. Since you know a lot about Aztec and Mayan culture you could help me make my drawing more accurate.

It's a good thing that mesoamerican mythology is getting more attention because Greek mythology is so overused.

I wouldn’t say overused per say but definitely they recycle through the same stories within Greek mythologies without giving it even 1/8th of the detail and attention to the overall culture as they did with maya and the three. Although I did absolutely adore more work of this type of mythology! And hopefully much more to come

Actually according to the lore of Maya and the Three and the Book of Life universe La Muerte and Lady Micte are sisters, while Xibalba and Lord Mictlan are brothers.

I loved this show. As someone who loves all mythologies, this is was a awesome! And considering kids can watch it, it helps with teaching my little sister about mesoamerican myths. Only thing I wished was that they added a few Inca gods. The Inca are already a under represented culture, and while yes they are here they maybe could have fit in a few of their gods here. Like instead of Chico being the god of dark magic, why not have Supay, maybe give him an army of mummies or something like that.

Tysm for doing this video! I've been struggling with finding some explanation about mythology behind the series. I really got amazed at how beautiful the character/background designs and cultural inclusion were. Hope we will soon see more movies or series about mesoamerican cultures!

It’s always interesting seeing how different cultures perceive gods/godesses of elements. I’m half Japanese and found the gods in this show really interesting and compared them to those of Shinto religion. Maya and Zats becoming the gods of the sun and moon reminded me of Amaterasu (Japanese sun goddess) and her lover Tsukuyomi (Japanese moon god). In Shintoism, at least the way my mom taught me, everything has a god to it (objects, nature, animals, etc.) which the show also seems to be going off of. Obviously the stories of the gods are very different between the cultures, but I liked how many still carry the same basic ideas of mythical beings for many aspects of our world and life. It makes me wish we could get more shows/movies that delve into other underrepresented cultural myths and gods. Also Xibalba was two-faced at some point like his brother, Mictlan. He ripped them out and made them into his snake staff after learning about how Mictlan killed Lady Micte with his two-faced, which devastated La Muerte since she was her sister.

I always love learning about the similarities between different cultures and mythology like the flood myth being practically universal. Also I didn't know that part of the lore with Xibalba, thanks for sharing

I highly recommend checking out the popul vuh. I read the translation by Dennis Tedlock but others may work just as well, its a pretty easy read too. Ive also read the first book of the storm runner series which is an urban fantasy, kinda like Percy jackson but Mayan, later books introduce aztec stuff too

1. I watch Coco each year around Dia De Los Muertos. I'm white, but I find the holiday to be fascinating. 2. I didn't care much for El Tigre, but LOVED MUCHA LUCHA! 3. I saw Book of Life. Not a fan of stories about men competing over women. Not my thing. 4. I have ALWAYS wanted to see other cultures be represented in fantasy. Provided there's no political undertone. But this was/is great. 5. Does Emperor's New Groove/School count towards diversity? Even if Cuzco's an asshole?
@darkrobin
@darkrobin Жыл бұрын
I can't say if Emperor's new grooves is good representation or not since its not my culture, although I do feel like its very humor centric more than anything else. Still love it, though and I'm always glad to see people interested in seeing more kinds of cultures in fantasy other than the typical Medieval Fantasy
@azazelgrigori9244
@azazelgrigori9244 Жыл бұрын
@@darkrobin Yeah, that bit about Emperor's new school was just a bad joke. I just finished Maya. When she and Zatz became the sun and moon, I'd imagine most people might think that's over the top. But I get that it's a reference to how the gods have tried multiple times to create a world, but competed over being the sun, and essentially ruined each world due to their petty rivalries. Or that's at least how I was told about it. And yes I am, but I refuse to watch anything with a political undertone. However, Maya doesn't. This means that I don't really go to the movies anymore. Woke writers don't seem to like animation, but when they get into it, what they create is easy to spot.

@@azazelgrigori9244 I’m pretty sure it’s also supposed to be a reference to the ending of the Popul Vuh. After defeating the lords of the underworld, the Hero Twins become the sun and moon. I’m a huge mythology fangirl, and finding so many similarities and references to the Popul Vuh literally made me squeal.
@mimimoomoo1551

As a peruvian, I found Emperor's New Groove entertaining and enjoyable! Yeah, Cuzco was an asshole, but there was an Incan prince called Urco (I read about him in hystorical textes) who was literally never sober, irresponsible and always looking for women or liquor. I believe Cuzco, even as a bad representation, was still accurate and inclusive! 😅 Also seeing the modern but still incan-like design of the city in the first movie was refreshing and beautiful. The restaurant where Cuzco and Paccha stop at while being in costumes felt familiar and New at the same time. Sadly, I wouldn't say all these things about the second movie (that one where Kronk is a boyscout). That one felt different. Sorry if some words can't be understood. I did my best to not make mistakes when writing!

i think that the actor that plays the character zatz in maya & the 3 warriors also played the main character in the book of life movie. both do have similar themes as the main character & group have to fight the villian with his tag a long army in both movies/series. however the narratar for the book of life is le muerta while maya narrates the maya & 3 warriors series. i was thinking that the 4 tribes based cultures were aztec, mayan, inca, & the 4th might be olmec. the vid confirmes that the clutures are aztec for tecca, luna island-caribbean culture, jungle lands for the mayans, & goldeen mountains for incas so i managed to get 3 of 4 correct.

@darkrobin
@darkrobin Жыл бұрын
I also had that question. From my understanding (although I could be wrong) Maya and the three takes place in an alternate world where the Spanish invaded but mesoamérica stopped it and kept most of it's indigenous culture. Personally I didn't mind it too much since book of life had modern songs being sung in the 1920's, Gutierrez's world building is inspired by reality but is mostly fictional and exaderated
