Indeed. Everybody’s too goddamn hypersensitive and perpetually-offended now, and even those who aren’t snowflakes themselves are too damn scared of offending the ravenous mutants and getting cancelled. And that’s not even to speak of the omnipresent sociopolitical agendas being pushed in everything in place of the comedy. What an utterly embarrassing and disgraceful time to be alive. Blargh.

@@Armaldo468funny enough not why this genre died. Most because to many bad ones come out and every single joke had then been used, and not always well. Or just the punchline died. And They became so predictable that the jokes weren't even funny because you could guess it before the punchline.

@@dannore8077 Perhaps not, but it’s certainly a factor that keeps anything quite like this from being done again-at least until the world somehow regains its senses, but I’m not holding my breath on that; I don’t particularly feel like suffocating. Also this kind of clever comedy requires functioning brain cells to write, which are also in perilously short supply today. If this form of comedy got too banal and dumbed-down to survive back in the day, can you imagine how atrocious it’d be *now?* A terrifying prospect, for sure.

Fun Fact: Weird Al gave an interview where he said he took a couple of dates to see the film when it was still screening in cinemas. And he'd wear his exact outfit he wore in this film. When he popped out of the plane on screen, they'd look over at him with this shocked expression. It got a laugh out of them every time.

To your reaction at 3:52, Weird Al did a cameo in all 3 Naked Gun movies. He was apparently a fan of the short-lived series the movies are based off of. That bit where he (Drebbin) talks to the mayor about shooting the "5 wierdos in togas", that was a nod to the original Dirty Harry movie, where Harry says something similar to SFs mayor.

came here to say this,. Airplane and Police Squad were actual scripts from 50's films/tv that the Zuckers added jokes. Airplane was based on Zero Hour and Police Squad on Felony Squad from the 60's (several youtube edits compare the shows and they were often shot for shot and line for line). Top Secret was possibly their most original creation and a satire of several genres including 'elvis movies'.

Denmark here, I'm not quite a Nielsen myself, but my name is Frank (though not Drebin), and my mother's sister and that part of my Family are all Nielsen's. Leslie Nielsen's father was actually a police officer, or more correctly he was an immigrant from Denmark who joined the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. His brother became the Deputy Prime Minister of Canada for a few years in the 80's and his half-uncle was the Danish-American actor Jean Hersholt who twice was awarded an honorary Oscar and a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and in his honor the "Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award" is still a special Oscar named by the Oscar Academy. The kind of secretly funny part is that when he is offered a Cuban cigar he said he is "Dutch-Irish, my father was from Wales", because in real life Leslie Nielsen's mother was from Wales, so he was neither Dutch or Irish, but he deliberately switched the "Wales" part from his mother to his father in this joke, he then go on to invite Priscilla Presley out for dinner, saying that he knows this out of the way place, that serve great (Danish) Viking food. It also explains how terrible he is at remembering the US National Anthem lyrics, because in truth he was not an American citizen, but a half Danish Canadian, so I think they just let him "run with it" 😁

The best order to watch them is: 1. A Substantial Gift (The Broken Promise) 2. Ring of Fear (A Dangerous Assignment) 3. Rendezvous at Big Gulch (Terror in the Neighbourhood) 4. Revenge and Remorse (The Guilty Alibi) 5. A Bird in the Hand (The Butler did it) 6. Testimony of Evil (Dead Men don't laugh) Weird Al appears in all 3 films (roles 1 and 3 are obvious, 2 isn't but is related events in the series). Other actors appear in the films because they appear in the series. Lastly, the credits in movies by the ZAZ team are part of the gag. So don't skip the end credits. Enjoy.

In the 80's, it was found that F&DC No.5 caused cancer, and (after much debate) it was finally banned. I think the next popular red dye was also suspected of not being safe, too. Many foods changed their formulas. The dye was in a lot of foods. I guess, the pistachio industry decided it wasn't worth it to keep dying their products. Pistachios were fairly popular at the time, but they weren't to dye for. (apparently)

The character he plays in this film is from "Police Squad!" an American crimee codey series from 1982 broadcast on ABC network. It ony did 6 episodes and still funny. This movie is from 1988, when Leslie Nielsen sadly died in 2010, a lovely obituary for "Enrico Pallazzo" has been printed in newspapers Similar humor can be found in both "Hot Shots" and also in five "Scary Movies", while the most clever iteration is "Loaded Weapon 1"

These three movies are based on the series "Police Squad" from 1982 written by the same two brothers that only lasted six episodes before being cancelled (which is a damn shame as I think it's hilarious, but I think they said it didn't do well because it's a series (like the movie) that you have to actually sit down and watch to get all the little sight gags and non-sequiturs). It featured Leslie Nielsen and the actor who played Ted, but Nordberg was played by a different actor.

It was hilarious, but didn't get much of a chance on-air. The show was called "Police Squad," hence the subtitle, "From the Files of Police Squad." (a disaster movie parody) - Top Secret! (a spy movie/Elvis movie parody cross over starring Val Kilmer in his first major role) - Police Squad! (a six episode comedy TV series that starred Leslie Nielsen, but which got cancelled. Which lead to:) - The Naked Gun series (this one and the two sequels, 2 1/2 and 33 1/3) - Hot Shots! (a Top Gun parody) and Hot Shots Part Deux (a Rambo parody), bot starring Charlie Sheen. I'm not sure if they made anymore comedies after these as they sort of split up as a team around the last Naked Gun Movie

One thing that took me more than a few viewings to notice is that Enrico Palazzo is a very big man, but his clothes fit Frank Drebin perfectly. Also, the Zucker brothers mother, Charlotte seems to be in most of their movies. In The Naked Gun, she played the Assassination Secretary. In Airplane! she played the lady who had a rough time putting on her makeup during turbulence.

The Airplane movies, Naked Gun movies, the Police Squad TV show and all the other Abrahams-Zucker movies like Top Secret all have this kind of humour.

Very impressed you know who Priscilla Presley is. They were eating pistachio nuts in the car. The shells used to be dyed red. Glad you enjoyed this so much. You'll definitely love "Airplane!"

The funniest thing to me is when young people don’t recognize Reggie Jackson, the Hall of Fame baseball player that was the Queen’s assassin. Even funnier is Jane referring to him as merely “the Right Fielder”. 😂 So many throwaway jokes. You could watch it three times and still not see them all.

This is a sequel to the short lived TV series "POLICE SQUAD!" (yes the title has an exclamation). Only lasted 6 episodes.. it was "too much for tv".. too many jokes. The intro to the film is about what Frank has been up to in the 6 years since the show was cancelled... aka Saving the World
