Indeed. Everybody’s too goddamn hypersensitive and perpetually-offended now, and even those who aren’t snowflakes themselves are too damn scared of offending the ravenous mutants and getting cancelled. And that’s not even to speak of the omnipresent sociopolitical agendas being pushed in everything in place of the comedy. What an utterly embarrassing and disgraceful time to be alive. Blargh.

@@Armaldo468funny enough not why this genre died. Most because to many bad ones come out and every single joke had then been used, and not always well. Or just the punchline died. And They became so predictable that the jokes weren't even funny because you could guess it before the punchline.

@@dannore8077 Perhaps not, but it’s certainly a factor that keeps anything quite like this from being done again-at least until the world somehow regains its senses, but I’m not holding my breath on that; I don’t particularly feel like suffocating. Also this kind of clever comedy requires functioning brain cells to write, which are also in perilously short supply today. If this form of comedy got too banal and dumbed-down to survive back in the day, can you imagine how atrocious it’d be *now?* A terrifying prospect, for sure.

came here to say this,. Airplane and Police Squad were actual scripts from 50's films/tv that the Zuckers added jokes. Airplane was based on Zero Hour and Police Squad on Felony Squad from the 60's (several youtube edits compare the shows and they were often shot for shot and line for line). Top Secret was possibly their most original creation and a satire of several genres including 'elvis movies'.

Denmark here, I'm not quite a Nielsen myself, but my name is Frank (though not Drebin), and my mother's sister and that part of my Family are all Nielsen's. Leslie Nielsen's father was actually a police officer, or more correctly he was an immigrant from Denmark who joined the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. His brother became the Deputy Prime Minister of Canada for a few years in the 80's and his half-uncle was the Danish-American actor Jean Hersholt who twice was awarded an honorary Oscar and a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and in his honor the "Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award" is still a special Oscar named by the Oscar Academy. The kind of secretly funny part is that when he is offered a Cuban cigar he said he is "Dutch-Irish, my father was from Wales", because in real life Leslie Nielsen's mother was from Wales, so he was neither Dutch or Irish, but he deliberately switched the "Wales" part from his mother to his father in this joke, he then go on to invite Priscilla Presley out for dinner, saying that he knows this out of the way place, that serve great (Danish) Viking food. It also explains how terrible he is at remembering the US National Anthem lyrics, because in truth he was not an American citizen, but a half Danish Canadian, so I think they just let him "run with it" 😁

Testimony of Evil (Dead Men don't laugh) Weird Al appears in all 3 films (roles 1 and 3 are obvious, 2 isn't but is related events in the series). Other actors appear in the films because they appear in the series. Lastly, the credits in movies by the ZAZ team are part of the gag. So don't skip the end credits. Enjoy.

In the 80's, it was found that F&DC No.5 caused cancer, and (after much debate) it was finally banned. I think the next popular red dye was also suspected of not being safe, too. Many foods changed their formulas. The dye was in a lot of foods. I guess, the pistachio industry decided it wasn't worth it to keep dying their products. Pistachios were fairly popular at the time, but they weren't to dye for. (apparently)

These three movies are based on the series "Police Squad" from 1982 written by the same two brothers that only lasted six episodes before being cancelled (which is a damn shame as I think it's hilarious, but I think they said it didn't do well because it's a series (like the movie) that you have to actually sit down and watch to get all the little sight gags and non-sequiturs). (a disaster movie parody) - Top Secret! (a spy movie/Elvis movie parody cross over starring Val Kilmer in his first major role) - Police Squad! (a six episode comedy TV series that starred Leslie Nielsen, but which got cancelled. Which lead to:) - The Naked Gun series (this one and the two sequels, 2 1/2 and 33 1/3) - Hot Shots! (a Top Gun parody) and Hot Shots Part Deux (a Rambo parody), bot starring Charlie Sheen. I'm not sure if they made anymore comedies after these as they sort of split up as a team around the last Naked Gun Movie
