Read about Canochet in the King Philip War. He was by far the most valiant warrior in early American History. Strategy, tactics, toughness, and just a real bad ass. I wish someone would make a movie that glorified his incredible story.

My 4th great grandfather was Daniel Ninigret (Harry) Harvey , my 7th great grandmother was Queen Ester Sachem Ninigret. My third great uncle Augustus Harvey a Narragansett served and was wounded in the civil war Connecticut Volunteers 29 colored infantry K company. He was named after my 8th great grandfather George Augustus Ninigret.

Stone age tools for metal one thereby leaping 1000 of years instantly. That would screw up anyone's mind. Yet the Indians put up a tough fight. There's a lesson here.

The State would go on to screw them denying them a casino before opening two of their own years later. The State Police also raided their tribal lands where they held no sovereignty or authority and assaulted the Narragansett to prevent them from selling tobacco tax free as was their right. The masonry skills of the Narragansett are the absolute best in the entire state. The lands there are beautiful and the site of the Massacre holds a spirit of sorrow over it.

Having grown up in this area, this is what I understand about the Indians of southern New England and i think this applies in general to all the tribes of this area. The great number of men were either killed or sold off to slavery. The women were left with the old people and the children. So about the only option left to the women was to marry outsiders. As most white men wouldn't marry an Indian woman, the majority of Indians married free black men. For the free black men , this was an optimal arrangement because a child born from a black man but an Indian mother was considered an Indian and could not be enslaved. At least that's what I understand.

For all intents and purposes....yes and no. Black isn't a nationality, it's a political status in law, just like white. So basically they were are a melenated people.

I might point out that if a group of people decide to abandon the United States in favor of their own "club", they deserve to be ignored in turn. America is founded on people working together as a country. Indians don't embrace that.

@Aperson-l6i Christopher Columbus mistook the American Natives for those of India, yes. But apparently the Natives of America didn't even have a name for their own people so they didn't correct Columbus. And right now they call themselves Native Americans. America was named after Amerigo Vespucci, an explorer acquaintance of Columbus, who actually owned household slaves (whom he bequeathed to his wife). So it's understandable they wouldn't have an early collective name. " I’m not sure why they (or Indigenous Americans) would embrace anything about the behavior of the United States." Maybe it was because Indians mostly valued warriors yet they lost all major wars to the Europeans. Also, Indians owed their existence to European horses and European guns.

@Aperson-l6i "The Narragansett people were in place long before the “United States.” I'm told Indians were in North America for ten thousand years. Of course, so were animals. "The English committed genocide against this nation of people." According to Google -- "The Great Swamp Massacre occurred during King Philip's War in December of 1675, when about 1,000 English colonists attacked a Narragansett stronghold, killing an estimated 650 Indian men, women and children, and taking 300 more captive." It would seem the battle could hardly be considered a "genocide." "We are grateful for any understanding of their culture and way of life." Apparently their "culture" consists of minimal achievements (compared to other world civilizations) and their "way of life" didn't even peacefully intersect with other tribes.
