The Nash is located in downtown Phoenix close to the light rail. Joel Goldenthal is the executive director of Jazz in AZ and The Nash. Jazz in AZ started in 1977 with the hope of encouraging and supporting the performance and appreciation of jazz.
The Nash is named for the world renowned jazz drummer, Lewis Nash. Nash grew up in South Phoenix and has traveled the world and played with the greatest of jazz performers. The Nash grew out of the dream of having a place in the desert where the jazz community could come together to perform, experience and celebrate the ever changing dynamic art form that is jazz.
Jazz in AZ wanted to create a place for young people to be part of the jazz community. They asked educators and youth what kind of venue was needed to draw them in. Jazz in AZ listened, they built The Nash and the youth came. Goldenthal notes it is very satisfying to see young musicians involved. It is rewarding to see an intergenerational mix of people at attending performances, taking classes and playing in jam sessions.
Jazz is the great American art form that speaks of our independence. It is the musical expression that moves our souls and makes us want to clap our hands. It touches our hearts and frees our minds. Jazz in AZ and The Nash are keeping the rich tradition of jazz alive!
