The Natural (1984) Movie Review

When an unknown middle-aged batter named Roy Hobbs appears out of nowhere, he takes a losing 1930s baseball team to the top of the league. Using a special bat he made from a tree that lightening once struck, Hobbs lives the fame he could have had earlier in his life. However, as an up and coming pitcher in his youth, a young woman shot him which forever changed his career.

This was a great film, easily in my top 100. I really enjoyed this review, I’ve listened to it multiple times. I loved Bobby’s wrap up of the film and how much reverence he has for it. Great job guys

I would not say Redford was too "old-looking" to play the THIRTY-FIVE year-old Roy Hobbs. After those two years recovering from being shot, he did manual labor in the South and Southwest (the Knights' scout discovered him playing for an industrial league for oil workers). That kind of outdoor work will prematurely age a man. However, having Redford also play 19 year-old Roy Hobbs was kind of weird.

Am I the only one that thinks the last scene isn't true? He died on the field and the last scene of playing with his son is exactly what he can't have, it's a dream, it's the ending he lost the moment he came into contact with the dark side. Le Mort d'Arthur remember? The *death* of Arthur? I think he *did* win the game, but lost the other dream. It's not just a movie about light and dark, it's a movie about sacrifice. Sacrifice one dream for another, sacrifice family for ambition, sacrifice everything to win the game.

Not a bad list. Mine personally: 5) Clint Eastwood 4) James Stewart 3) Sean Connery 2) John Wayne 1) Harrison Ford. A lot of similarities between us. It's hard not to be romantic about baseball. This movie is a classic hero's journey tale. Mixed with greek and roman mythology, baseball and the King Aurther tale. I have not read the book. And honestly after listening to this review I think I will skip it. Great job on the review guys!
